Taking another stab at RE4

Unfortunatley I can't get past the opening level in the village. Holy hell all I have is a pistol and the villagers swarm me. I got a shotgun but they start crawling through the windows and cut my head off with the chainsaw.

I really want to get into this game, too. I played for a bit when it came out then lent it to my bro in law. He finished it and said it was awesome.

Yeah it takes a couple of tries. The game is not forgiving.

When a big group of them are in the corner of the house, toss a grenade. The death of the chainsaw guy ends the attack, so try to hit him with the grenade, shoot him while he's on the ground, etc.

Head shots.

Also, with the shotgun, wait until the right opportunity to use it (a group of them right in front of you). Don't forget to use the context-sensitive kick either, especially when a group is nearby, to save ammo. It doesn't take too long, you've probably gotten closer than you think to being done with that section. It took me three tries I think.

My advise is to take it slow. Don't rush or feel the need to instantly clear the horde and progress. Instead find a good location way back you feel comfortable in, then hold your ground and clear them wave by wave like good old shoot em ups. When it's clear before the next wave, go grab the fallen ammo and stuff, then go back and hold your ground again. As for the chainsaw guy DON'T LET HIM NEAR YOU. No matter what you might think, shooting a bunch of bullets at him far away >>>>>>>>>>>> letting him get near you to attempt more headshots. He's not a normal enemy, DO NOT LET HIM NEAR YOU! :D

Just hide in the buildings and let the chainsaw dude kiss the sky if he tries to climb any ladders. The ganados go away after five or six minutes. Super easy

I honestly died a few times in this first area, but after some tries you'll get a strategy and just go through it like a pro without a hitch.

game of the generation. You owe yourself a favour to playthrough. Once you've done it once, you'd be amazed at how much skill you have when you take on the truly fucking awesome minigames.

Merceneries kicks as much ass as the main game.

Finally got past it.

Took the good advice and picked 'em off, retreated, picked 'em off.

To my (pleaant) suprise I didn't have to face the chainsaw guy, the church bell rang and they took off.

Sweet game I like shooting 'em in the foot and running up and kicking 'em.

You basically just have to buy time in the village. There's no easy way. It's survival, plain and simple. There's like one house in the back of the village you can hide in where there are no windows for the enemies to sneak up on you with. The only catch is, you gotta be ready to unload if they find you.

Two ways to do this easily. If you don't want to face the chainsaw dude, take a quick right at the entrance to the village and you will see a tiny square building on your right. One door. Go in there, turn around and slaughter them as they come through the opening.

If you want the shotgun, go to the house, up the stairs then out the window and to the right. Turn the corner and turn around to pick off the villagers as they come around the corner. Save the shotgun for the chainsaw guy, because you will need it...

This has probably already been said, but the trick is to keep moving. Always keep the environment in mind and try to use it to your advantage. Across the road from the house you get the shotgun in, there's a house that you can use to keep the enemies from circling you. Get in there, barricade the door, and get all the goodies inside. Once they break through, blast the first of them with your shotgun, and while the door is still open, chuck a grenade outside. That should clear them out.

The easiest way to buy time probably is to go up the tall tower at the back of the village and shoot them as they try to climb up.

I say probably because I haven't ever try that method and is just speculating. I shot my way through that part like a real man. Then a few stages later, realised like Itagaki that this game is more lame than cool. :P

Still finished the game, with all the extras (all the way up to the hand cannon) and such, but felt more like a chore than fun. The only reason I stuck with it all the way to the hand cannon is because my buddy lent me the GC and the game so I could get the hand cannon for him (even he didn't want to do it himself). :lol

If you use the tower, it doesn't work. The villagers throw malatov cocktails up there and smoke you out. Capcom really did think of everything with this game.

They don't climb up that giant tower in the back of the village. They just throw those malatov cocktails up there in the to to get you down.

Edit: Damn beaten

Now Roland you gotta continue playing and learn not be surrounded because when you'll reach a certain mansion a little further down the game you'll cry all the water that is in your body! :lol

In the village I did the sprint and then 180 quick turn a lot. No good?

Damn, Now I want to play it again, just to see that smoke out sequence. :lol

I'll tell you what I did do though:

After running around and getting the shotgun and granade in the second floor of that house, I jumped out the window, I ran my ass back to the gate I came from, blasted the 3 or 4 bitches waiting there to ambush me quicky, turned around towards the direction of the middle of the village knowing that there was no more ass bitch to get me from behind and I concentrated on the fuckers swarming at me with smart use of the two granades, shotgun and handgun.

The key in this entire game throughout is to bottleneck the motherbitches the best you can and slow them down as they apprach you. A good nade toss at the right time can mean the difference between life or death.

Don't bother fighting, run straight for the second house on your left (should be a little wooden fence surrounding the doorway). Watch cutscene. Bar the door with the shelf next to it. Bar the window with the shelf next to it.

Run upstairs, grab the shotgun.

Knock down the ladders they use to get upstairs from ground level.

Aim to take out multiple opponents and don't focus on individuals.

Use grenades when you see an opportunity.

Lock and load.

Kick ass and take names.

I don't think you should run right into the house because that activates the chainsaw guy. I suggest running around for a while to waste some time before going into the house.

I think picking up the shotgun activates the chainsaw dude.

what he said (the chainsaw man only come when you enter the house and pick up the shotgun. Kill him for a nice bonus though :) If you really can't sustain/survice. Climb into the barn or go into the tower and hide there. There's only 1 point of entry.

It shouldn't be that hard avoiding the villagers though. By the end of it all though - you'd come back to this stage after you played through Merceneries, and you'd think you were quite literally having a nice stroll through a park.

I've played it a thousand different ways, but the first few times tackling that scene, I settled on staying roof-side after grabbing the shotgun from the upper bedroom of the house that triggers the chainsaw/sound custscene.

Pop through that bedroom window and watch, repeatedly kick down the two ladders that lead to the roof while continually clearing the open window of with shotgun blasts. Eventually chainsaw guy would get up there and head right for me shotgun waiting.

One caveat is that waiting for him to rush you on top of the roof, always triple-check that someone hasn't propped up a ladder behind you and prepped to make a sneak attack on you from behind...

I once was SO ready to lay shotgun into chainsaw guy as he approached, then watched in horror as I got nailed by something behind me, which then made me stagger right into the chainsaw...

If you don't kill Chainsaw guy, the battle with those villagers doesn't end.

Might as well end it as fast as possible if you ask me!

Weird. When you enter the house there's a cutscene where Leon goes 'Ahh.. chainsaw!" so I thought that activated him.

There might be a misunderstanding. You're right, I meant entering the house that triggered it, not that the shotgun did.

Also, you can get through the scene without triggering chainsaw man. I once went through the whole sequence looking for creative ways to run around not involving that house and never triggered chainsaw man before it cut off. I distinctly remember that because I was wondering when he was going to get around to it...but never did.

A few tips for the village part:

1 - This is not a timed battle... you have to kill 14 villagers before the bell rings and you can continue
2 - There are TWO Chainsaw guys in this fight... one shows up if you grab the shotgun. The other shows up if you try and run through the north exit before killing all 14 villagers
3 - If you can take the heat you WANT the Chainsaw guys to show up, because they drop treasure with $10 000 each.

Also, killing the Chainsaw guys is not mandatory. The battle will ONLY end when 14 villagers are killed. I believe the Chainsaw guys count as villagers towards that 14 total.

EDIT - Also, for maximum fun, KEEP MOVING! :) I mean you CAN get your back into a little ally, and just mow down the 14 villagers in no time. But if you fight them more frantically, running from house to house, diving out of windows, blocking doors with furniture, etc, its a LOT more fun!

First time i entered the village i didn't though there would be THAT many villagers so i played kinda like when i play the other REs. I've been killed lol.
Second time i carefully moved forward trigering the less villager possible at the same time. At some point i had to back up and realised that the small path right before entering the village was also full. I shotgunned them, walk on the other side of them and then i was almost in front of the door i was coming from and killed the rest of what was coming at me. At some point i though they would reach me i shotgunned the pack and trew a grenade = they were done.

Now i warned you for a difficult moment later during the game, you're still prolly a couple of hours from there and this particular part (that i won't spoil to you) will be hard if you had a hard time at the village. Come back and post here if you're ever blocked or frustrated at this part when you'll reach it.

I guess I never killed the guy, cause I don't remember ever getting 10000 right in the beginning, :lol. I've tossed grenades at the fucker and he still gets up.

Yeah I've been playing RE4 like the other RE's - I think I was suprised by the agression and tactics of the zombies. I guess I panicked :(

Plus I recall running low on ammo a lot in the other RE's, so I was real hesitant to use the shotgun (which I picked up after the bell rang) and grenades.

Happy to say I was able to clear the village using only the pistol.

Don't let it get you down. There are some good tips in this thread. Just keep at it and you will get better. I died quite a few times in there as well

I just finished getting beat up by that guy with the beard.

This game rocks - I love the different animations and the way you can kill off zombies. Even though I hate those guys throwing the grenades I like shooting them and blowing up the whole lot.

I finally met the merchant, bought the bigger suitcase and upgraded my gun and shotgun. I wanted the rifle but there was no room even after I acquired more slots.

That's what I love/hate about the game. Once you feel like you got everything covered, the game throws something else at you. Like fricken dynamite!

Yep it's totally different than the other RE's, took me awhile to get used the different behaviors they exhibit - dynamite, throwing axes, blocking my gun shots!

Trust me, once you finally start getting comfortable, the enemies will start doing something else to make you go crazy. I won't spoil anything though.

I'm currently playing through it for the first time, myself.. I'm up to the part
in the castle, and the one thing that's really bugged me so far is how the bulk of the enemies you face all behave more or less the same. Aside from different weapons (and the wooden shields), the monks appear to be identical to the villagers. Sure, they've replaced TNT with flaming crossbows, but otherwise it's just the villagers with different weapons.

I do appreciate the different enemies that get thrown in the mix every so often, like the blind guys with the Wolverine claws (even though I died about 20 times in the room with two of them).

I just made it past that brawl in the cabin
where Luis helps you fend off the swarm of zombies, and you run upstairs knocking down ladders and what not. I used the flash grenade to stun them while Luis picked 'em off

not sure I like having to drag Ashley around ala ICO, and having to blow healing herbs on her, though. Hopefully I can dump this chick soon enough

Right now I have an upgraded Punisher and Shotgun. I have about 40K now and wouldn't mind the rifle and/or TMT (?) but don't have any room in my pack.

This game is awesome, I like the mechanics a lot better than the old RE's, especially the save system :D

If it puts you at ease any,
Ashley gets kidnapped more times than Daphne in Scooby Doo, so there will be plenty of fun times without her. Of course, they'll throw nastier shit at you when you don't have a girl to protect :)

another easy solution I found after some trials is to completely avoid gonig in the house.

Run down the path, and trigger the villagers coming towards you, preferably by shooting one a few times. Run BACK to the gate you entered from, and the three villagers who threw the boulder at you will be there. Off them, and you''ve got a nice area to stand in that you won't have to watch your back at. As the villagers come in swarms, off them with headshots, kneeshots, and kicks.

Heh can't wait. I've never liked those perky Meg Ryan/Kate Hudson types (to be fair they seem to detest me, too)

my favorite village spot was the north? exit if you turn right immediately, nobody can come from behind and they have to run uphill through a narrow passage towards you, you can sneak up there and smash a box for a flash grenade too before you even alert them

I like to use the stick and move strat for swarms - the villagers can't run as fast as you, so get off a couple of shots then move to a new position. If you try and stand in one place and hold them all off they will eventualy overwhelm you when you are reloading. This goes double for the 'mercenaries' mini game after you beat the main game. Imagine the 1st village with 2 chainsaw chicks, and 2x the villagers all on your ass. Run and gun, run and gun :D

So true. Everything about RE4 is pure awesome.
