to make it clear, those DVDs come with ToB PRE-ORDERS... while the UMD demo mentioned in the original article will come with the actual ToB games on 12/6.

No. Let's make it even more clear. I went to Tsutaya yesterday to preorder ToR and I got nothing. I asked them when I would get the special disc and they said next Thursday when the game comes out. The thing is, these discs are already in stores, they're just not allowed to give them out. There is one rip of the movie, and there is one set of discs on auction, because some shops let buyers have stuff early. There is no UMD. I have no idea where this confusion is coming from.

Actually, watch the movie. The file itself is 4:3 because it's ripped from DVD.

Again it makes no sense to include a UMD preview disc with a PS2 game.

ToR is projected to be a popular game, 500,000 with ease I'd assume. We'll assume for argument sake that 50,000 of those people at best will even own a PSP. That's a damn waste of discs pressed. And I doubt those other people would go buy a PSP simply for the fact that they have a UMD demo disc in their possession.

Wait, is it saying that Melfes will be on the UMD Demo Disc 1 - maybe that's what they confused it with. But them, why didn't Play-Asia have the video of it?

So yes on DVD and UMD preview?

well, i know for sure the DVDs are out as pre-order bonus and the trailer i posted above was taken from those DVDs. News stories on those DVDs only mentioned that it's "a new tales game" on "unspecified platform." Then i saw the new on Magic Box about the "UMD demos" in the actual game. So i think they are different things and UMD demo story may be true.

Edit: I'm NOT for sure now since i only read news stories about the "pre-order bonus" but Jonny confirmed that there is no such thing... :(

Looks fucking sweet. Namco would be stupendously stupid not to release this in North America, and it is a must-purchase game for me. Wowza, nice surprise for the day.

Now if only they'd translate some of these handheld Tales games. I'm still waiting for the GBA games to be translated :/

On gamefaqs someone is saying the music is Mitsuda, though unless there are credits on the actual dvd I have no clue how they would know this.

Though if true, having Mitsuda do a mainstream rpg again would be awesome.

how many tales games has actually been translated to the western countries? I certainly want to play more Tales games since I loved ToS, but I wont buy a japanese copy since I would have no clue on the story.

3, including TOS.

to be more specific:

tales of destiny (PS1)
tales of destiny II (PS1) (japanese title: tales of eternia, changed thanks to he-man)
tales of symphonia (GC)

tales of destiny is kind of naff. it was not super early for a PS1 game but sure felt like it. very ugly color palatte and not particularly exciting gameplay if you're working backwards. ToD II is worth a look, though.

Specifically, the other 2 are Tales of Destiny and Tales of Destiny II, both on PSone. The Tales of Destiny II released in English is actually Tales of Eternia retitled, though. Japan has a separate Tales of Destiny 2 released on PStwo that's an actual sequel to Tales of Destiny, but that game wasn't translated (or hasn't been yet, anyway ;) ).

edit: oops, ferricide beat me to it

thanks. Probably wont work backwards though :P

There are 2 Tales games translated for PSX, so it must be at least 4 games if the first one's a remake of the SNES game (I don't remember), 5 if not.

and chances of it happening are approximately -5000%.

it's ugly, apparently short, has annoying gameplay and a bland story (everyone who hates TOS' story should really play the destiny or destiny 2 JP and see how good we have it.)

Well, Tales of Phantasia (the SNES game) was remade for PSX, but neither the PSX version nor the SNES original were brought over.

OK. Haven't played it myself, didn't know :)

Right, I thought so. So we have Tales of Destiny 1 & 2 for PSX in English. 2 being Tales of Eternia in Japan.

Edit. Bah, I see I missed a post saying all this above.

I'll host the movie for a little while:

It's not that bad...it's actually nice to see what happened to all the characters post TOD, and explains alot of the history of the swordians. Even though the time paradox thing is way overused, I still find it enjoyable. The grades thing is first used here, so at least they experimented a little. The game took me 57 hours with no mini-game attempt. So it's not terribly short.

Graphically it's nothing awe inspiring, nor anything really offensive either, imo.

Huh? Tales of Destiny is great! I've been playing it recently and love the graphics, the combat, the story .. hell, I like this game more than most RPGs of this generation. If 2 is even better then I'm a happy man.

Well there are different opinions regarding ToDII ^^;

The story is crap like Ferricide said, basically Chrono Trigger but 100x more idiotic. The battle system is also less fun than ToS because it has penalties for getting behind the enemy. But the rest of the battle system is quite good: It's a lot deeper than ToS with the ability to upgrade your tech attacks's properties and being able to combo magic (level 1 fire -> level 2 fire -> level 3 fire -> fire summon). The characters are also on par with the rest of the Tales series and the voice chats are around 1500-2000 and really develop the characters. It's a fine length at aroudn 40-50 hourr; There are about 3-4x as many FMVs spread throughout the story which are gorgeous, and the game has one of the best endings + epilogues I've ever seen.

Despite it not being as good as ToS, it's still a top-notch Tales of... game and anyone who likes the series would enjoy it. But yea no point in bringing it to the US at this point, especially since it would just get butchered like all the rest of the localizations.

It reminds me of Lunar Eternal Blue. Never did understand how she could've come back from the future though.:/

Ah cmon now, the going behind enemy's back thing isn't that major. It just forced you to fight differently. To note, Tales of Rebirth looks to be pushing a limiting system as well with the force system. Anywho, besides the fantastic char development, omg wtf is up with the story. :/

heh, I didn't really even try to think of how or why. I just thought it was really sweet and beautiful to see her come back and fly into his arms. Also the credits sequence with the stain glass windows is my favorite credits roll in an rpg :) The part during the ending where everyone says their goodbyes and disappears (and Judas goes back to death ;_;) was pretty touching. It's kinda wierd because I didn't care about the story that much, but I cared about the characters so the ending really had a strong affect on me

Again it makes no sense to include a UMD preview disc with a PS2 game.

No, its a great idea. Here's another (which Sony have done previously with other media in the UK)

Pack a UMD in a magazine - big lifestyle one like FHM. 100 of them will win the reader a PSP. Consumers take the disc to their local Sony stockist and play it in a PSP. 30 seconds of Movie/game trailers WOW!, and then they find out if they've won a PSP. If not, then they've seen the sexy little beast strut its stuff, and they are sold.

+1 sold

Does this mean Namco's going to release two Tales of games on the PSP or has the already announced Tales of Eternia (?) been replaced by this Tales of Melfes?

It's not a definite PSP game, yet.
