So I recently took out a few random albums from the library the other day (okay not exactly random but I had only faintly remembered hearing the name Tangerine Dream mentioned somewhere). Among the albums were 'Alpha Centauri,' 'Phaedra,' and '220 volt live."

Listening to them I couldn't tell they had originated in the late 60s until my dad had said so. Given the oldest album with me was 'Alpha Centauri' from 1971 and the sound wasn't particularly fancy but for whatever reason the presence and style seemed more recent. Timeless music perhaps? I didn't really like it it nor did I care for "Phaedra" which played through as I did my homework. The music was fine enough to get work done with.

I took "220 volt live" with me during my trip to Florida (which I just got back from today - it was nice). These album was a little more kicking and the guitar work was phenomenally impressive after a few more listens. Hell, I think the guitar solo during "Two Bunch Palms" is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard. Lots of other great tracks.

So yeah, sorry for the long intro with no real substance. I just feel like this is going to be my next step in the music world. They have so many albums to check out. I watched some video clips on their site www.tangerinedream.org and that was interesting as well. There's going to be a lot to learn about this band given how long they've been around.

From what I gather the real Tangerine Dream is just Edgar Froese, correct? Can someone please point me in the right direction as to find more of the guitar work, or even some piano pieces? What are your favorite albums? Have you ever seen them live? Any interesting facts? Yadda, yadda?

I've never heard any Tangerine Dream but I know Christopher Franke (who was in Tangerine Dream from 1971 to 1987 according to that site) is also known for creating the music for Babylon 5.

I enjoy their soundtrack to William Friedkin's Sorcerer, which they apparently composed having only read the script.

She's been "dancing" at a stripclub near my house for a little while now. Crazy show she does.

Anyway, didn't mean to derail the thread. :D

They scored Thief, Risky Business, Miracle Mile (props fnordchan) and Near Dark as well. Good times.

Does anybody else love Tangerine by Led Zep...

Measuring a summer's day, I only finds it slips away to grey,
The hours, they bring me pain.

Tangerine, Tangerine, Living reflection from a dream;
I was her love, she was my queen, And now a thousand years between.

Thinking how it used to be, Does she still remember times like these?
To think of us again? And I do.

Tangerine, Tangerine, Living reflection from a dream;
I was her love, she was my queen, And now a thousand years between.

Man, I love that song. did that feature heavily in your tangerine dream?

He also did the soundtrack to the first Tenchi movie (Tenchi in Love). Some elements of the movie were kind of slipshod, but the music really pulled the package together and gave it more of an impact than it would have otherwise.

I was coming in here to pimp Miracle Mile and Near Dark, but I'm pleased to see sefskillz beat me to it. Everyone should give Miracle Mile a rent:

Anthony Edwards picks up a pay phone in the dead of night and hears someone ranting about how he's in a silo, the missles are on their way, and Russia will be striking back in approximately an hour. Cue steadily escalating tension throughout the rest of the film, with no real idea if this is the real thing or a prank call until the very end. The Tangerine Dream score is terrific, in that oh-so-80s sort of way. Highly recommended.

Thing about Tangerine Dream is their range and experimentation. Sampling their work through years, can sound like a different artist in points. For example, while a lot of TD fans don't like the "synth pop era" of the early 90s, otherwise known as The Melrose Years (Optical Race, Lily on the Beach, and Melrose) I personally love those albums plus their spiritual successor, Tyranny of Beauty. But after that TD moved on again.

My favorite Zeppelin song, probably. I thought this thread was going to be about Led Zep. :p

Great movie.

I had a friend bring that movie to a "movie night" get-together, a sort of date movie night with a bunch of single guys and girls. Basically, an excuse for people to meet and maybe hook up.

He pimped Miracle Mile. We watched it. Nobody got laid.
