I like shirts like these because they're not obvious to 99.9999999999999% of the population (like say if you wore a shirt with Mario on it), but the 0.00000000000001% of the population who knows what it is would think it's amazing.

Instead of making a new topic, i'll just post this here. I'm planning on picking up a jp PS2 in the very near future. On the shmup side, what's worth getting. I'll probably pick up ESPgaluda and DoDonPachDaiojou just based on their lineage, but what else? I've got most of the Saikyo collections and the Gigawing Generation pack on other consoles, ditto for Psyvariar 2 and Shikagami No Shiro 2.

GWG is a new game, and is said to be pretty decent if you can get past the 30fps, ugly graphics, and framerate problems. (:lol) The third Psikyo pack is probably worth picking up for Dragon Blaze if you're a big Psikyo fan. PS2 doesn't have a whole lot of shooter exclusives, so you're probably pretty well off with the list you've got.

So, so pre-ordered.

I'd imagine Ibara making an appearance on PS2 later this year, what with DC support finally drying up and there being no other real system to put it on.

Also, if Senko no Ronde doesn't actually make it to DC, my bases are covered.

I was under the impression that GWG was just a GW1+GW2 pack, but if it's new, i may check it out later.

GWG's a new game. Thanks to the terrible port I'd say it's the worst shooter I've played this gen by far. I'm hoping the lack of TATE was due to programming issues and not some new Taito standard, cuz nothing would break my heart more than a TATE-less Mushi.

Saw it, loved it, but didn't order one. Why the hell not? I'm now thinking. I'll go get one for meself and another for my only IRL vert lovin' friend.

Avoid XIIStag.

I haven't played DC Psyvariar 2, but I do prefer PS2 Psyvariar 1 to 2. The loading times for PS2 Psy2 really kills it for me.

Shit, I didn't even know Mushihimesama was scheduled for ps2, thanks.

Regarding Psyvariar... I could ramble for hours on this topic but I don't have the time so I'll keep it short. As I see it the real Psyvariar is the first one, which also happens to be my favourite shooter in a long time. The sequel follows on the template but there's lots of experimentation, some important and some anecdotic, some cute, some wild, some great, and some silly, which make for a very interesting game which sort of works if you know how to play it but it's inherently flawed. I'm talking about the version I played, the japanese xbox one, which as I understand is quite similar to the arcade (for the ps2 version they reverted the control scheme to the one used in the first ps2 psyvariar... I know I'll get that version some day to get the full picture). In short, if you had fun with the sequel and can bear with outdated graphics, go grab it. I don't know whether it's worth to get a japanese one though, at least in Europe it was released for dirt cheap.

i've already preordered one of these shirts, actually. cool design. and all my friends who've seen my tv sitting on its side will know what it means.

the end - psikyo shooting collection 3 is a must. dragon blaze is phenomenal. unbelievably lush 2d artwork, swarming yet navigable bullet patterns, a very original weapons system. it's already one of my favorite shooters. there aren't too many ps2 imports you haven't thought of...i think xii stag, double shienryu, and star soldier are all worthwhile at their current prices. there are a lot of ps1 imports you might want, starting with the phenomenal ports of donpachi and dodonpachi.

edit: HOLY FUCKING SHIT, when did they announce mushihimesama ps2? i thought that was an april fools' joke on the shmups forum. ibara next, pls. ketsui too.

I love shirts that only a small number of people will get, too, but since this has something that is recognizable to just about everyone, you'd still get a lot of people asking what it is. But still, very cool.

There hasn't been an announcement; it just popped up on Play-Asia, and everyone I've sent the link to has preordered. I imagine NCS will list it next, and then we'll get an announcement in...say...June.

Well, it seems like the Mushihime port is actually somewhat definite.

thank you for contacting Play-Asia.com.

We have received the information right from Sony's official distributor yesterday late evening. We did not want to wait so posted it right up. We are very sure that the information is correct and expect the game to be announced by Taito shortly.

...

For your further information, Mushihimesama already has a Sony catalogue number (which is SLPM-66056). The game will be a DVD release supporting 1-2 players with a Japanese recommended price tag of Y5,800.
Now I have 4 games I'm definitely buying for the rest of 2005.

Any word on Ibara yet? I know it's not even out in the arcades, but still, i can't wait.

Oh, and I've got donpachi/dodonpachi ps1 covered.

Not to bump, but any word on what G.Rev is up to after Senkou no Ronde?

Border Down would be a perfect fit on the PSP.

No word on an Ibara port or what G.Rev will be doing next. I'd imagine we'll have to wait at least six months to a year for news on either.

Hell, I woudn't mind Border Down on the PS2 or just about anything. I'm still pissed that I missed out when I had the chance; I hear its uber good. :(

Shmup fans are just insane. DoDonPachi and ZanacXZanac for the PS1 just got back in stock at Play-Asia, but they're $109 each. jesus.

Play-Asia always know exactly when to milk a game for all they can. :p Of course, it doesn't help that DDP PSX is rare as hell.

i knew ps1 dodonpachi was approaching the $100 mark, but i didn't know zanac was up there too. they're both great games, but jesus. maybe they're a bit cheaper on ebay.

Don't you think that schmups occupy the most elite realm of gamer ability/renown? I was thinking about this earlier. If you were somehow to rank prestigious geekdom among aficianados of a nerdy hobby, I'd probably put hardcore shooters at the top. It's probably related to their archaic nature (all elitism or class based consumerism relates to archaic design. History=class). When I see someone who totally owns at schmups I'm in total awe. It really does approach a sort of Zen mind set that is sort of a common contrast reviewers make. If someone told me with a straight face that their religion was "tate" I would take it more seriously than I do, say, Mormonism.

That shirt rules, btw.

Shit, I keep trying to track down Hyper Duel for the Saturn on Ebay but it's always $160 or more. Same w/ Battle Garregga--$100 and up nowadays. Bah! At least Batsugun is "affordable" at $50-70 range. Radiant Silvergun mint? $200 easy.

I still need to get these for Saturn:
Gun Frontier
X-Multiply/Image Fight
Kyukyoku Tiger II Plus
Strikers 1945 II
Salamander Deluxe Pack
Thunderforce packs
Gradius Pack
Dodonpachi

Currently have these:
In The Hunt
Souky
Kingdom Grandprix
Radiant Silvergun
Gunbird
Strikers 1945

geekdom is more of an inverted mountain, and if shmups fans are at the peak then they're really at the bottom. honestly some of the shmup arguments i've seen make gaf seem worldly, reasonable, and mild. vicious tate vs. yoko disputes, weird anime fetishes, console politics, video output minuteae (no offense, but while i can see the difference between true low-res and filtered output, i can't imagine why anyone cares). we aren't monks or scholars. we're just big dorks.

edit: well, that's probably too negative -- there are aspects of the shmup community i really like. the parts of it that actually have to do with the games. high score competitions, superplay videos, strategy guides and so on.

truth.

Shmups have become such a niche genre that the devs that cater to us have no incentive to make their games accessible anymore. When something like Gradius V which isn't particularly hard by shmup standards is slammed so hard for its difficulty, it becomes clear the our little niche is never making a comeback.

Interesting take. Then you have people like me who just love the way shooters look and feel and could care less about 1CC'ing or whatever. There's just something about shooters that's timeless. Plus, for me, being married w/ kids, they're just great pick-up-and-play games as well.

Edit:

Also, I only TATE my DC for Ikaruga since I have it hooked up to an LCD monitor and is obviously much easier to do as a result. The difference is amazing though.

My Saturn I can't do it since it's on my huge Vega, so I play verts "hori" style since my TV's big enough that the different perspective doesn't bug me that much.

I'd almost rather they didn't. So many generes have been watered down to cater to the masses, the last thing I'd want to see is the same happen to the shooter genre.

We're not that different. As I've grown older, the amount of tedium i find acceptable has plummetted. I've found myself moving away from RPGs and more towards pure action titles. With something like Castle Shikigami 2, i can turn it on and be having fun instantly.

That said, I'm not teribbly concerned with "1CCing" either, but if my girlfriend, for example, picks up Ikaruga, she gets frustrated rather quickly by how frequently she's killed.

Also, it wouldn't take much to make shmups "accessible" again. Throw in some big-budget cutscenes between levels, a silpheed-esque "shield" system instead of discreet "lives", and a psyvariar2-esque adaptable difficulty that routes you to easier levels if you're having trouble.

Hell, they could do what Namco is doing with Sigma Star Saga and graft shmup-eletents onto a more mainstream genre like action/adventure or RPG.

I thought this was gonna be about Shinobi.
That's still a really cool shirt though. I thought i'd ruin my tv forever everytime i tried that for ikaruga for GC. The colors would get all screwy, but after hitting the set a bit it would go back to normal.

I'm just annoyed that something that should be enjoyed by the masses are somewhat horded by its fans. Then again, I know lots of shooters have very small print runs, but still... I still believe fans could do more to get more people into their interest. It's healthier that way.

I don't think the problem is so much hoarding as supply not meeting demand. Community- (sometimes over-) inflated demand causes prices to shoot up when there are only so many copies of these games to go around. Of course, aftermarket opportunists are also to blame. I don't think any of the prices on rare shooters are caused by people trying to be exclusive, though.

I doubt there's much hoarding going on. The current situation seems to be inevitable when you have an older (and therefore wealthier) community and printruns that sometimes number in the hundreds.

I just got outbid on a copy of ESPgaluda from a seller in the UK. It's probably for the best. Bidding in Pounds tends to kick my dollar-having ass.

Well both of you are right, though I do believe hording still is a problem with video games, though not as much as with shooters.

Cool little site for reference:

Learn how to "TATE" correctly!

Nice reviews as well--he shows Sonic Wings Special a lot of love. I hear conflicting things on this game, but it's prettty damn cheap on Ebay and decidedly "old school", which is a plus for me. Anyone here recommend it?
