NY Daily News said:
The fuming family of a Texas middle school student who received a "ghetto" classroom award from his teachers is demanding an explanation for the insulting prize.

A 14-year-old Sulphur Springs Middle School student went home with the "Huh? Award" this week for apparently often saying the word in confusion, KLTV reported.

"I had to take a second look. I was like, really? How could a teacher put this on there?" the eighth grader's grandmother Debra Jose said. "Did she just say ghetto on a certificate that she was giving my grandson?"

How do a group of adults look at something like this and think "This is a good idea."?

HOW?

NY Daily News said:
But the principal's signature was forged, and he was not aware of the awards, according to Sulphur Springs Superintendent Michael Lamb, who told KLTV he was "shocked" at the certificates.

"The "huh?" award just begs questions. And then the 8th annual brings questions, too," he said. "It's my understanding the same award was given last year to up to 60 kids."

My 8th grader brought home her yearbook yesterday and I was leafing through it, got to the goofball student awards and one was "Should Be a Couple" award with a pic of a girl and boy.

I thought that was a lot of pressure to put on those two, what if they don't even have chemistry? Too bad, the school has spoken and deemed them a match.

In elementary school I had a few teachers that gave out joke awards (Biggest Packrat, Most Friendly, Best at Video Games, Funniest Student, etc) on the last day of school, so maybe it was something like that that went horribly awry?

Inside joke among the class? I'm not saying its appropiate though.

I can buy that. Like, the "cool" teacher or what not. But, need to look into it more to confirm the pitchforks. Someone mildly urban, or at least enough to talk w/kids in their dialect.

Would be shocked if this is just from some straight conservative.

So is it the Huh? award or the Ghetto Award

Pretty big difference

It's in the link. The presentation of the awards was "The 8th Annual Ghetto Classroom Awards". The award this student received was the "'huh?' Award".

This article goes into a little more detail. This was a special ed class who were all given "ghetto" awards, and this kid got one for saying "huh?" all the time. Kids in special ed have enough issues with confidence as it is, which is what bothers me about this. It wouldn't be unreasonable for one of them to assume they're getting ghetto awards as opposed to real awards because they are in special ed. And to make one that's basically mocking this one kid is even worse.

I think the umbrella of dumb awards was named 'Ghetto Awards' and his specific one was the Huh? award.

Like he got a Razzy for Worst Actor.

I remember one of our teachers making up bullshit awards like these but they weren't intended to be insulting and were generally harmless.

'They didn't know'

GTFO the teacher's seat and sit next to your pupils then because you're just as much in need of education as them. Jesus.

How do you go 8 years of not knowing about this? Dude must be friends with the superintendent because he just threw those two teachers under the school district's entire fleet of buses.

I thought it was funny until I saw this.

Nevermind. Holy shit teacher needs to be fired.

I'm actually more mad at the fact that this teacher thought it was a good idea to give a special ed student an award making fun of the fact that he says "huh?" a lot.

Maybe it was the:

Professor Quantanisha's Ghetto Classroom™
Huh? Award

That would be slightly less offensive.

Slightly.

His mother said:
"(He's) pretty hurt, you know," Jerrika Wilkins said. "He feels pretty inferior. You know, he want to succeed. You know, it just kind of hurt his feelings."
You know?

8th annual makes it sound like a tradition. I'm more impressed it went so long with out some other special snow flake's feelings getting hurt.

Its bullshit but I would be ready to believe that this was just a misjudgment more than any type of class or racial malice.

Too many people use ghetto in regular conversation for me to assume that this was anything more than someone trying to be one of the "cool teachers".

I get why the family is mad, and I understand how it feels (I was called a pejorative aloud by a teacher in 10th grade. Was apparently not that big a deal in late 90's Lithonia, Ga.)

This just does not sound malicious.

About 17 years ago my class gave out similar awards.

I won for shortest and fattest.

I got up there, took the awards, and told them to fuck off. Best suspension I ever had. It ended up overturned.

So now a special snowflake is a special-ed student who doesn't want an award that is overtly making fun of him?

Tradition doesn't make it ok.
