Tekken 4 vs. Tekken Tag

...I have the opportunity to get one or the other for $10 (not that special, I know, as they're both damn near that anyway), but I've been itching for some Tekken action. Which would be the better one to get?

TTT is more fun. At least for me. A classic Tekken with awesome graphics (the characters look better) and added gameplay from the tag mode.
T4 is faster and also very fun but it is not so Tekken as TTT is.

Most people arw going to tell you to get TTT over TK4. I prefer TK4 myself, but I'd probably just get TTT and wait for TK5 to be released instead if you find you want more.

TTT. Tekken Bowling is the shit. Then again, I never played Tekken 4, but it seems to be badmouthed alot around here. You should maybe check the Tekken Zaibatsu. PEACE.

Get Tekken Tag. Far more fun and longterm value. T4 is broken IMO. Badly balanced and not much longevity due to lack of characters and unusual feel in relation to other Tekkens.

Or wait for T5 which is a solid return to form and very fucking awesome.

Tekken Tag... Even if it's just for the graphics, they're so much better than 4, it's still definately among the technically impressive games this gen.

Theres nothing wrong with either Tekken Tag or Tekken 4. Both titles are great despite what people keep saying about Tekken 4.

Tekken 4 is awful. TTT while not what I would recommend to anyone who wants a solid fighter is still light years better than Tekken 4. Tekken 4 is that bad really.

The only thing Tekken 4 did that really pissed alot of people off,was the fact Namco added some unneeded commands per character. Alot people who were used to the Tekkens before it didn't want to re-learn a character due to those added commands. Namco apparently made up for this by removing the ones people complained about in Tekken 5.

I was completely dissapointed with tekken 4. Almost everything about it felt like a step backwards. TTT is a much much better game.

Tekken Tag is a really good game (in fact my most played fighting game of this generation), but I think #4 is good for Jin alone. He is a blast to play with once you get used to his new style.

The series pinnacle was part 3 or 2, depending on your speed preference.

The music in part 3 was particularly great for pumping you up.

I played 1, 2, 3 and TTT religiously.

4 is missing that "something". Very forgettable.

I always remembered liking 2 the best--mostly for Armor King, admittedly. :lol

I used to like T2 the best but then T5 came out. T5 is by far the best entry in the series. It hasn't really gotten its due yet but I'm sure that when the home version comes out and more people have a chance to play it you'll see a lot of people change their tune.

I have both and Tekken 4 feels more complete as a game.
The story lines are cool.
I like the walls in the game and how you can smash your opponent into them.
I feel that added a new dimension to the game.
What the fuck is up with all the Tekken 4 hate?

Tekken was always a bit more of characters, music, flash over the top style over gameplay.

This is evident by how unbalanced the top tier over the low tier characters were. Some characters could even be button mashers. A newb Eddy could sometimes beat even a medium skilled player by mashing. This is also evident by the fact that Ogre1 in T3 could dominate a match doing a variation of 1 triple kick. A Paul Lighting Fist could wipe out 50%, etc. The weird character roster started in part 1, went nuts in part 2, and went even further in the home version of part 3. The music in all of them were awesome, depending on your tastes.

The series reinvented itself in a good way each sequel.

TTT was a refinement of 3 but sadly lost the cool music (which is important IMHO). Plus I happen to like 1on1 better than tag (in Tekken anyway.. as I enjoyed tag more in Capcom's VS games).

Tekken 4 lost many characters which was arguably a major part of its charm; using characters such as Gon or Dr. whatever that always fell down. The rosters in 2, 3 and TTT were downright hilarious. Unbalanced-ness is great when you bring some casual gamers in to use top-tier and you use a crummy character like Kuma. Playing like this, matches are heated even when girls play against you.

Having some good tunes was also nice to keep things fresh and cool instead of annoying and video-gamey.

Storyline aside, Tekken 4 lost this stuff and seemed to try to take itself more seriously which took away from a lot of what made Tekken cool in the first place -- making everyone -- noobs and experienced players -- have fun together.

I mean thats just my humble opinion, but I haven't been successful in getting casuals to play 4 like I have with the previous ones in the past so that's gotta account for something.

T4 was just so...soft; hits felt like they were padded and muffled. Jabs ruled the roost, and some formerly vicious contestants like King, Bryan, Yoshimitsu, and Lei had the nerf stick shoved where the sun don't shine hard.

What!? I can't believe you just said that.

And Kuma isn't crummy.

I would have said Tag 2 years ago. But after playing 5 over and over and over again, going back to Tag seems weird. 4 is much more like 5 since they seemed to contiue to ise the same engine for 5. After you get used to the engine in 4 it is really good.

Yeah, it wasn't the engine, but the actual balancing issues, hit properties, and stage design that kept T4 from being fun for long for me.

I don't know exactly what part of my statement you have a problem with but 1) Tekken characters are unbalanced. 2) And if you think that's sexist, well no, it wasn't meant that way, it was merely a generalization. Most females are not gamers. Apologies if you're a female gamer, there weren't too many around 8 years ago ya know? To correct this generalization, let me say "The females that I've encountered are not gamers, yet they had quite a good chance of squaring up in part 3." I apologize for what seems like a sexist remark, although I assure you it was not. My roots are in the last-gen era.

And Kuma isn't crummy.

Actually, if you take two gamers of equal skill he sucks and is probably THE lowest ranked character in the game. Low # of attacks + primarily short range and useless kicks. Against quick poking patterns, Kuma has a hard time getting away. He must be played defensively, with his F + 1,1,1 being his only really quick poke. Eddy, Law, Nina chew right through his defenses. He's so freakin big that there are combos that work against him (that hit him on the ground), that don't work on anyone else! I have a lot of hours of Tekken under my belt and have played and seen many tournaments plus casuals, trust me on this.

I agree there are some balancing issues... but there are always are in Tekken games... 5 has a lot too.... But not as many, and they seemed to make all of the characters badass...

In TTT Kuma is the lowest ranked character. In 4 and 5 he isn't...

4 didn't do it for me, but I will check out 5 to see if it the series has come back to form!

Well I loved TTT and had an affair with 4. Now 5 is the apple of my eye. I love going out and fighting people in the arcades here in Japan. I don't know where some of those people go to practice their combos but I have played some cats here that are off the hook. Really the avg player here is better than the avg players in the US...or at least Seattle and Cali.

Yeah, yeah...

As for Kuma, I know all about fishing for f+1. I've followed the high level scene for years and play Kuma as one of my main characters. I just find him funny, I know he is low tier.

And Kuma was better in TTT than he is in 4 and 5. Kuma has been robbed in 5. Horrible reach, ff+2 goes through the opponent, weak combo damage(which is sad in a game with damage like T5). Even Roger is a lot better than Kuma in T5. It's a tragedy.

in 4 he was one of the better characters... 5 he has lost his reach.. but they make up for it by making the fucking sumo guy crazy fucking killer in the game... lost about 5 bucks to a guy last night....

Oh, I'm not saying there's not balancing issues, but the thing with T4's was that the "bell" of the Bell Curve was very, very low; putting Jin up on this pedestal with a ton of weakened or low damage also-rans at the bottom. T5's at least has good spread like the older ones.

What Tekken isn't like that though? TTT had Mishimas, Changs and Ogres dominating with junk characters like P. Jack.

Not if the also-rans' ranks are boosted with former top guys like Yoshimitsu and King. IT was the scope that changed, not the fact there was where there wasn't before.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, the 4-player simultaneous tag matches in TTT are a total riot and is reason ENOUGH to snag TTT over T4. Seriously, fun, fun shit.

Going solo? Then T5 may be worth skipping both for.

No. This is not true. People were pissed off with T4 because:
A - not enough characters/variety
B - New close quarters fighting system
C - Crap (really badly balanced) overall roster. Jin is the most powerful character in the game and Lee has an infinite juggle.

Top three 3D fighters in terms of consistent enjoyment and logevity IMO -
T5
VF4 Evo
TTT

Tekken 4 is far inferior to all of these. Anyone who tells you otherwise simply hasn't played them thoroughly in a single player and competitive capacity. Just ask the Zaibatsu guys ffs.
