Telescopes own.

So the other day, my dad gets the crazy idea to pull out my more or less unused Telecope he bought me *ages* ago to look at the moon. I was bored so i decided to help out and what not. We pull up on the moon, get a nice big lense. Great detail on craters and what not. He then decides "Hey, let's check out some stars.", whatever, we look at one or two, (unsurprisingly they look like little blobs of light), then he says "Hey, get that one just over the tree." I am it and get a clear shot, look through the telescope and what do I see? Saturn! "Dude, I got saturn or something" "Boy, shut the fuck up, what is it?" "Dude, I got saturn" "Man, you full of shit" *looks* "Oh damn!"

Not only did it feel nice to shut the old man up, but I dunno, something about seeing a planet through more than a picture's just really, really breathtaking.

Your post is more about the relationship you have with your dad than what you think of telescopes, but I agree, they do own.

Yeah, I just got back from my Astronomy course and my prof did mention about Saturn being observable from this month to the next month only. Before clicking this thread, I knew you were gonna talk about Saturn. :D

Having to take that course, my space curiousity is on an all time high and I wish that I also have a telescope. Preety cool digging up a cool old toy Tre.

I've got a 10" dobsonian telescope myself, it looks like a huge cannon. Saturn and Jupiter are good to look at, Mars is less interesting, and Venus just looks like a huge white glob. But the really cool things to look at are galaxies and nebulae, otherwise known as DSO's (deep space objects). Also wintertime is some of the best viewing time of the year due to the reduced jet stream distortions.

As I youngster I was often buried in Astronomy and Astrology books... hell I can vividly remember many nights standing in the driving way of the house I grew up in staring at the sky(had a great view almost directly over head of Ursa Minor and Major. I've never owned a telescope though. Last year my missus step father passed away and as we were packing some of his things we came across his telescope it was around the same time(either the previous night or not long afterwards) where as we were coming home late we both looked up (cloudless sky) and just marvelled at the # of stars that were visible... and then thought about how such a SMALL percentage is what were actually seeing, and I explained to her how some of the stars we are seeing in our night sky might even actually have died already. I remarked to her at that point that I'd really like to get a telescope... it's just one of those things that has always sat in the back of my mind... hopefully soon I'll follow through on it. Maybe something my daughter and I can do together as she grows up....

I get depressed thinking about the stars, universe, planets and stuff. Just makes me realize how insignificant we really are. Heh.

You know how like the light we see from stars can be (millions of?) years old? How old is the image we see of the planets?

I think it's the distance of the planet and earth in light years. (I think, I'm hardly any sort of Astrology student) So like 3 light years would mean something would take like 3 years to see the change in light, right? (I'm guessing).

Your telescope hasn't realised it's full potential till you witness sex or a murder or a sex-murder. Or an accidental death bought on by strangle-masturbation michael hutchence styles.
