Thanksgiving Gaming Thoughts - Echoes and DS

Metroid Prime: Echoes is a good, solid title that lacks the atmosphere and immersion of the first. The graphics may be better, but the soul that made the first such an experience for me is gone. I think whoever said that if Prime lacked the Metroid franchise it wouldn't be nearly as good was close, but off. If Prime lacked the consistant immersive atmosphere it wouldn't be nearly as good. See Echoes.

I'll also say that some of the animations don't flow as well this go. And even though the Echoes graphics are better, everything in Prime feels a lot more 'together' and feels more polished. From the locales to the water to the animations to the small details, I prefer Prime to Echoes.

The Nintendo DS is a joy of a system and people who complain about Mario 64 DS are really reaching. The touch screen analog works very well and I've had zero issues using only the D Pad on difficult platforming sections. Those who compare controlling 3D titles with the D pad with controlling 3D titles with a keyboard's arrow keys are so very off.

Mario 64 DS looks better, is paced better because of the inclusion of items, stages, and diversions (rabbits), and is all around more fun than Mario 64. It is now my favorite platformer. The Mini-Games are great as well and are an excellent way to waste time.

I disagree a lot!

Echoes features something that Prime lacked, a narrative. The next Metroid title should feature a story, voice work, and plot. That would take the game up a noche and really help rebuild the franchise.

The boss battles in Prime 2 are a lot better and tougher though.

word. And more exciting. My gal even stopped what she was doing a couple of times just to see if I was gonna survive these battles or not.

Good times.

DS does rock. Spent all my money on that, a new computer, new clothes, shoes and other games so I havent got any new Gamecube games since Pikmin 2. I need more money!

I agree, the control issues in M64 DS are GREATLY overstated. It certainly takes a little while to get used to, no disputing that, but frankly it took me a while to get used to controling Mario 64 with the analog stick way back when, and I seem to remember many people complain about analog sticks being hard to control back in the day.

I prefer Prime to Echoes.
I think over the course of time this will be the predominant sentiment when fans of the Prime series look back. I liked Echoes a lot and it does do certain things better than its predecessor but the original Prime is the superior experience IMO.

Honesty is overrated. When I am disapointed in a Nintendo product, I prefer to keep that to myself.

BREAKING NEWS: GAHIGGIDY REPORTS DISAPPOINTMENT WITH UNSPECIFIED NINTENDO PRODUCTS. SMAPTY IS INCONSOLABLE. NINTENDO STOCK PRICES TUMBLE ON THE NIKKEI.

Echoes is more cohesive and the better game from top to bottom. Everything "works better" than it did in the first game and I'm so glad Retro took the liberty of introducing the Ing and Luminoth to the series. This is something Metroid that's also something new and that's awesome.

It's a high quality product that starts right when you see the box for the first time which I think is just gorgeous. It's the kind of game Nintendo's reputation for quality is built upon.
