What is Your General Thoughts About Story Downloadable Contents (DLC) In Singleplayer Games

After the announcement of the Second Season Pass with the Rogue Trader I got contradictory emotions. It's all over Wrath of the Righteous again. One side of me got really frustrated because the game released on 7th December of 2023 and the last story DLC will come on Fall 2026. I thought this is too much time to play a "completed" game. But one side of me knows that Owlcat Games needs to earn money somehow and they need this. Also majority of players who play Owlcat Games want this road as well. They say and I quote "These cRPGs need to be played more than one time."

My thoughts are like this: I know that we cannot escape DLCs. But for someone like me, to play a game with "everything completed", story DLCs are kinda bummer. Yes I can put that game to the backlog until it gets all the DLCs and patches and until that time play another game. I do that, there is nothing else I can do about it. But sometimes I really wanna play that game. For example I really wanted to play Rogue Trader after the second DLC comes out (because I thought it will be the last) but Owlcat announced 2 more story DLCs and said that the last one will be released 1,5 years later. I cannot play right now because I want "completed" experience and to be frank, I cannot play these long games after and after within 1,5-2 years.

I really want to hear your thoughts about this (there is no aim or purpose here, just curious about your thoughts):

  • What do you think about story DLCs? Do you think they are necessary?
  • If so, how many years gap is acceptable from the release date of that game (For example, the game can recieve story DLCs for 3 or 4 years after it's release)?
  • Or do you think story DLCs are unnecassary?

Not personally a fan. Once I finish a game, I tend to be completely done with it. The only time I really like DLC is when the game is absolutely exceptional, like BotW or Astro Bot.

Same, not generally a fan except in exceptional circumstances. Phantom Liberty and Shadow of the Erdtree are the most recent exceptions.

Make it free update or if it's an expansion pack that adds 30% to 50% more content to the base game then sell and market as an Expansion Pack. Like they did back in the day for Medal of Honor.

Mostly overrated and not worth it

I'd rather see the developer put their time in a full blown new experience, built from the ground up. It almost always provides more value and innovation than piecemeal add ons

I'm generally against story content as DLC, unless it's released immediately after the game.

I have too many games and limited time to play them. The likelihood of me going back and revisiting a game to play DLC that is released 6 months or more after the game is released is very low, no matter how good the game is.

I've been holding off playing Rogue Trader for just this reason, since I knew the 2nd DLC was coming. Now I need to decide if I'll play it after the 2nd DLC drops in June or wait even longer for the additional DLC.

Usually doesn't matter. When I replay a game, I often skip the dlc.
best one is for souls games but even then - I skip on replays sometimes because i prefer main game.

If I like the game, I'll generally appreciate story DLCs. There are occasional duds, of course, but I can also remember some really excellent story DLC (e.g., Shadow Broker for Mass Effect). I don't feel any compulsion to buy them in order to complete the story, though. Sometimes I'm interested, sometimes I'm not. Depends on how deeply invested I am in the main game and also what the DLC seems to offer.

It's the only type of DLC I consider buying. I'm baffled some don't agree. Do you think overpriced costumes/items are better?

Drip-feed story DLCs are just no good.

Its best if it's all packed together as one big meaty expansion pack with everything.

I think they're fine. Things take time to make, they can change based on player feedback, and they give you a chance to return to a world and characters you like.

I've stopped buying almost all of them.
I used to buy launch games at the higher price that came with DLC in the future. But they have been such disappointments lately that I stopped.
