This thread has reminded me...

Didn't he record a live version of the entire Ziltoid album some years ago? I remember really looking forward to it, mainly for the chance to hear the album performed with a live drummer, but I'm not sure whether it ever got released. Anybody know? (Note I'm not talking about the Albert Hall Z2 show, which is all I find when I search for "Ziltoid live.")

I recently did an in depth listen to "Heavy as a Really Heavy thing" and am incredibly curious about the details of his early career, given that "Sex and Religion" is a pretty fun album.

R.I.P. the Skullet doe

Ghost is one of my favourite albums. Anything else like it?

I also like ES Posthumus' The Cartographer and Lifeformed's Fastfall.

A friend of mine recommended Devin Townsend to me a few years back. There is so much stuff he's done it's kind of hard to know where to start. I still don't know many of the stuff posted in the OP.

Saw DTP live last year and will see a show in Febuary of next year with said friend. The show last year was really great, Devin really has a great stage pressence!

Oh yeah man I hear ya. I first fell in love with Devy by watching "Awake!" live in By a Thread on YouTube. I proceeded to listen to Addicted and Epicloud for 8 months or so until I decided I wanted to try new things of his.

Found it when I was searching for another artist, Anneke Van Giersbergen and to my surprise they did live presentations that are on youtube I was very impressed with his music. Still didn't dive into most of his material but for the few tracks I heard were very good.

I think Anneke and Devin have great professional chemistry. Not only do they work off eachother well musically, but their combined stage presence is joyous.

Anneke was the one who wanted to do her own version of "Hyperdrive" for the Addicted album.

Cool woman.

Found him through an FFXI video showing a Promathia boss kill. The BGM they used for it was Earth Day and I couldn't get enough of that song, it was so musically out there, still probably my favourite song of his. Got to respect the man, he's been through a lot and seems to genuinely love what he does.

earth day is so tongue and cheek, but amazingly composed. Love it.

It's literally nonsense lol

There's a few liner notes for HAARHT that give a few details about where he was at around that time, I think he just had a real bad experience of major label life and it soured him in general. There's a rumour that SYL originally meant 'Steve You Loser' after Steve Vai.

Devy has a book out soon so I'm sure there will be a lot about that part of his career. So glad that in one year I get autobiographies from both Devy and Ginger Wildheart, two of my absolute heroes :)

Devin Townsend is amazing. Coincidentally I'm listening to Ziltoid right now :-D

Casualties of Cool is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. It's perfect to listen to while working, or while trying to sleep on a plane, or on a long drive, or anywhere else.

I can't wait for Trancendence

I also have his book preordered. Should be wonderful.

I just buy everything of his without a second thought. He never disappoints. Such an incredibly talented and varied musician.

Been a huge Devin fan since the Strapping Young Lad days. I wholly recommend everyone to give his vast discography a listen. You can't say this about many artists; but his music is so diverse that there is literally something for everyone.

Love the man, but haven't listened to near enough of his enormous and varied discography.

Satan's Ice Cream Truck was my introduction to him. Been hooked ever since. Even got to see him live in a small club when he opened for Symphony X in Arizona.

It's insane to me that after all this years he's still able to reach such RIDICULOUS notes. Also, his phrasings are legendary.

Recently he's made vocals for Haunted Shore's song "Norway Jose" and it fits great, the song (Now called "Feed the Wolf") is even better now.

Devin Townsend is also one of the most charismatic and entertaining live performers I've ever seen. If you ever have the chance to see him live, don't pass it up.

He just radiates fun and silliness during the entire performance. I fucking love it. He never takes himself seriously, yet performs a hell of a concert across every possible style of music, and never lets up. It's just astonishing what he can do.

I have tried and tried to get into his music. I just can't get into any of it. There is no doubt Devin is very talented as a musician but I think I prefer him producing other bands.

I really like the work he did with Lamb of God.

I really want to see him live... still have yet to.

And yeah... everyone needs to listen to some Devin Townsend.

Devin is cool. I believe it was around 2002 I went and saw him play a set comprised of SYL, Ocean Machine and Infinity songs. Really good show.

Accelerated Evolution and especially Synchestra are almost flat out perfect albums to me.

If anyone's interested, here's Gaia off of Synchestra:

And Storm off of AE:

Yeah Storm is incredible, dude can still pull it all off live too.

I've just seen the announcement for the UK tour next year with Tesseract and Leprous in support which is going to be ridiculous, I can't wait!

Another one of those "Never thought I'd see this thread on GAF" moments for me.

Devin is an amazing musician with an incredible body of work.
