I mean, explain them to me like I'm five or something.

Why were some music rags calling this band 'The Greatest?'

It's by no means bad, but I can't find anything new about this band that I haven't heard before.

Any takers?

Magazines are calling them "the greatest"? :lol
I mean, I don't know, I do enjoy the album. But it took a couple of listens and I'd hardly consider them the best.
Guess I didn't really answer your question though, haha. It's good rock and I like rock. One of the few albums that I own that was put out after 1990 and isn't Japanese, heh.

I think both their album and new ep are great, but I dunno I just really like the sound and the songwriting I guess. It did take a few listens though before I started to love the album

I thought some of their songs were ok. Not really sure where the hype came from but I guess NME does that kind of thing a lot.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah = 2005
Arctic Monkeys = 2006

That's all I'm going to say about that.

The funniest thing is someone made a comment to me about them being an "it" band, and I had no idea. I guess if you come from the angle where they're being annoyingly over-hyped, it'll be difficult to like them. I know I get the same bias with other things. It's why I find reading gaming/movie/music magazines and news sites unbearable.

Seriously

I listened to their current LP and was NOT impressed at all...I don't understand why the indie press is soo up these guys asses

But speaking of other brit bands, I'm really digging The Futureheads album :)

I find Franz is much more dancey though, and Arctic Monkeys a little more rock.
Fuck, I've been swapping those 3 discs, the Killers and some Modest Mouse CDs for the past few weeks and I've been thoroughly enjoying myself, haha. Fuck y'all that can't handle me enjoying myself.

I just started listening to the Arctic Monkeys after a friend sent some songs over. Good stuff and all, d/led some more tracks... but I already feel a bit blah on them. Part of it may have to be that this same friend recently introduced me to the Mars Volta and De-Loused at the Comatorium.. and well, it's like a 100 times better than AC even if completely different genres of music.

Going off-topic a bit: I don't keep up with music bands for shit so I need help. Any more music out there similar to the Mars Volta's stuff?

More like Arctic Monkeys = 2005 if you were truly in the know! These guys are incredible -- their songwriting is top notch and they're fun to dance to. What's not to like?

Plus Alex Turner is oh so dreamy.

yeah, i don't get it either. The two bands i'm nuts for right now are People in Planes and The Editors (with some Damone on the side)

i dont love em, but yeah, its a pretty good cd IMO. track one is gnarly

After a few listens I was thinking "PUT THAT SONG IN GUITAR HERO 2 DAMNIT!"

Basically, in the UK we have an AWESOME music scene, but then some SHITTY trendy little band comes along and people start hyping them in the press and radio before they even have an album out going OMG MONKEEZ AM BEST EVA and then they release an album and shitty magazines like the NME are all like OMG THIRD BEST ALBUM EVA JAMES BLUNT AM CRY and then everyone in the UK falls for the hype and treats them like the next SUDOKU (fuck you) and buys everything they release and then it gets to the stage we are at now where all the believers start to realise they aren't that good and the people who never liked anyway are all like TOLD U SO FUCKING N00BS while listening to Biffy Clyro and sitting smug about their superior taste.

Yeah. I'm not really a fan.

People in planes are awesome! I saw them a while ago (when they still loved england :'( ) supporting Oceansize (what a gig!) and they were really really fantasic. Really nice guys too. I have an old 1 track CDR they were selling actually. Wonder if it's rare now...

It's a way of weeding out what music critics you should and shouldn't listen to.

They're a good band, they've got a great future ahead of them, but the Greatest of all time, they are not.

Not to mention Arctic Monkeys are actually good.

What I've learned is that neoGAF has some of the worst music tastes... Don't listen to half of these people...

All we do is post "obscure" shit, so we could be like.... SHiet! You dont know so and so!?? YOU gotta listen!

But they will suck ass...

Issues much? :lol
I came to the Arctic Monkeys CD totally unbiased, and I really enjoy it. So I think y'all got issues more with the press than anything else. (Shock!)

I think it was pretty obvious I wasn't totally serious.

But being serious now, I do believe it's a case of the Brits over hyping an average band and a lot of people falling for the hype.

I don't think they are shit. The music isn't bad I guess, but I'd still only call them average. People calling this guy a 21st century poet are off their fucking head. The amount of people who have said to me "His lyrics are awesome because you can totally relate to them it's just like your friday night out" is astounding... I mean Mike Skinner does the same and he's still fucking shit.

And them getting 3rd best album ever? Come on guys, that's pathetic.

OK, so I listened to the record again last night, and found myself enjoying it a bit more.

I definately shuffled this album into my 'OK' pile. Everyone I work with have been pimping them as well, which is what prompted me to check them out.

I usually pop onto Metacritic to see what kind of response bands get when I'm first checking them out, and this one was huge in it's hype.

Read enough on the internet and you're bound to believe anything. :lol

Haha, I had no idea they were going that far. A little overboard indeed.

Hah true... and we are on GAF afterall.

Yeah, it has died down a bit but it was bad a couple months ago. Radio 1 was playing them constantly and NME gave them 3rd best album.

The Sugababes cover of "I bet you look good" is about a million times better.

Oh god that was the first song I've heard of theirs and it's absolutely awful. Seriously, I could barely get through it.

I was listening to the record on the way home and I still can't imagine how anyone could hear A Certain Romance and any other number of tracks from it and not just be completely blown away. Regardless, I'm happy to have an album that is infinitely listenable for me even if some other people aren't fans. =)

NME called their record the 5th best British record of all time which is definitely overboard, but no one of note has referred to their album as the 3rd best ever.

i like the band a great deal

i am only affected by how others view them in that i was unable to secure tickets to see their first DC show a few months ago.

Which i heard live on npr.org anyway.

Frankly it sounded quite pedestrian when you compare it to the live show from Bristol they did on the NME tour.

however, I have tickets to the b'more show and i'm hoping for something a bit better since they won't have to keep as composed since it's not being broadcast.

Now, Maximo Park...there's a band I'd love to see live.
