Master Asia only steps into the cockpit of his mecha because it is less intimidating that way. Dude doesn't really even NEED his mech to fight giant robots.

He's Master Asia, and if not for that one little problem of his, he'd be SUPER ASIA and there is no show good enough to contain that level of amazing.
