It's (basically) March, and that means that it's time to start the bi-annual ritual of evaluating my cell phone plan. I'm up in September if I want to renew with Verizon, November if I want to explore other providers.

So today's topic is signal coverage:

Coverage maps are only good as a general guide. They offer - at best - approximate coverage, and certainly don't account for dead spots within the "covered" areas. So, I'm kicking off the harder angle of the research today, which is to get real-world feedback.

There are two choices, and only two choices in this thread, Cingular & Verizon. This is mostly for the sake of this thread not turning into a giant pissing contest, but also because between all of the major carriers, C&V offer the most coverage for their respective technologies (Verizon, CDMA; Cingular, GSM).

So, humor me, GAF:

San Francisco/Bay Area residents: How are Verizon and Cingular in your neck of the woods?

New York City/Metro Area residents: How's Cingular shaping up in an area where Verizon has the home field advantage thanks to being the spawn of Bell Atlantic?

If you live somewhere else, feel free to spout off as well. But I'm primarily interested in these specific areas.

In DC, I use T-Mobile. They're "ok." I get the sense that they're the budget plan carrier. I have 600 minutes anytime, free nights/weekends, 50 free text messages a month for $39.99. I typically use my phone for long distance calls and use my home phone for local and incoming calls.

My phone - the Siemens CF62T - sucks, but it's tri-band, long battery life and is tiny, which is all that I really wanted. Pics for your viewing and digesting pleasure.
