Wonder if they'll mention the 'headless' Mac. Any places streaming the keynote speech? I'm not seeing anything on Apple's website.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
Is there a stream somewhere? I heard it was delayed till tonight.

The centerpiece of QuickTime 7, which will debut with Tiger, is the new H.264 video codec -- a scalable, high-quality technology that scales from cell phones to high definition video. H.264 will be used in both competing high definition DVD video formats -- HD DVD and Blu-Ray

Didn't think Apple had the clout to do this. A nice pincer move on their part. No matter who wins the next-gen DVD wars, Apple profits.

Of course I still hate them for destroying over 3 years of my writing.

Tiger stuff sounds good. I like the whole searching deal. Quicktime 7, sure... good... now, OFF WITH THE IMAC'S HEAD!

I'm even more excited about Dashboard than ever before. The selection of wedgets makes my pants wet. I really need to see video of this conference.

What's funny about Apple haters is their inability to grasp how Apple is the main innovator in the computing world.

I like Apple, when it comes to design, there's few better. But 'main innovator in the computing world'? How do you mean? These aren't exactly the Wozniak days. The most obvious big change Apple has recently ushered in in the computer field is OS-X, and most of that 'innovation' is a result of an already existing Linux, or at least BSD.

Oh, and who was 'hating' in this thread to begin with?

WHO DEY!?
Drinky Cow specifically.

It's little things, like for instance Dell builds USB hubs into their monitorsa now. Apple has been doing that for 5 years at least. iPod obviously is the standard HD based MP3 players try to attain. Things like that.

I'd hardly call a USB hub integrated into a monitor all that innovative. Besides, Dell has been sticking USB ports on the front of their desktops for quite awhile now. When it comes to the MP3 arena, yeah, Apple definitely sets the benchmark. When it comes to their computers, I really don't see any of that risk-taking innovation that Apple was once synonymous with.

I don't think Apple was "the first" with USB integration into monitors. Maybe they are influencial, but not innovators.

WHO DEY!?
Maybe instead of innovation, I should say they push the industry forward. They ditched floppy drives years ago.

Here is a better example, the new iMovie fully supports HD video. A consumer app, the first AFAIK.

As for the Hub thing, I specifically said it was a little thing. I work in a University environment. Dell Machines 4 years ago did NOT have USB ports on the front.

So does the flash-based iPod have a screen or not?

According to the Italian mac website that saw a banner they weren't supposed to see...it does not have a screen. The tagline is "Life is random." Should be pretty cheap if there's no screen to deal with.

Jobs introduces iWorks and Pages.

And yeah, the original iMac did a lot to push USB to the forefront, not to mention the importance of design for computers.

Apparently they just announced the Mac Mini.

From macnn:

Apple introduces Mac mini. New member of Mac family Slot-load Combo optical drive. Play DVDs, burn CDs. Queit. Tiny, FireWire, ethernet, USB 2.o, both DVI/VGA output. Very tine. Height is half the size of an iPod mini. BYODKM. Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, Mouse

Firs tone is $499: 1.25GHz 256MB/40GB More memory and larger hard drive for $599. Will ship on January 22. Ships in a box smaller than the regular iPod box

Just introduced the headless iMac: the Mac Mini. I, for one, am proud of Apple's incredible restraint in NOT calling it the iMac iMini.

Price $499-599.

I'm not sure that Apple's ditching the floppy drive really pushed the computer industry into a similar change. Most newer PCs I see still feature floppy drives. Personally I think they should've died off years ago, but believe it or not, there's still alot of people out there that insist on having them and get upset when a PC doesn't have it. PS/2, serial, and parallel ports are finally starting to dissapear on newer PCs, though.

Personally, the last Apple machine that really caught my interest was the G4 cube. It's just a shame it didn't really sell, and hence Apple pulling the plug on it pretty quick.

I desperately need pictures. Macmerc.com is reporting that it "fits in the palm of your hand." Which I'm sure is a bit of hyperbole, but still...itty bitty Mac that I can tote around? That's tempting.

Sounds awesome, just wish the 'bumped-up' version also came with a DVD burner. You know people are going to want to use this machine for some economical video editing, and it'd be an awful nice feature to have, but I suppose that would also cause it to start cutting into their other markets.

That thing is pure sex. But the photo leaves out the wires that'll be on your desk, ruining the look.

On the other hand, you could go wireless. But that'd increase the total price.

It's even cooler than the Cube.

Too aesthetically pleasing for the people on here to like it though.

I've yet to even see this new system, but hey, I hope you're right. The Cube is the latest great design to come out of Apple, IMHO. The G5 looks too much like it's appealing to the aluminum case LAN-fan market.

wireless mouse/keyboard combo costs ~50 bucks now, so it's not that more expensive.

does the device support vga?

If they can give me a decent upgrade in RAM and HD capacity for $100, then I will for sure buy the $599 model.

Thing is, how much of a bitch is it going to be to upgrade the drive to a DVD burner combo if Apple doesn't offer the option?

oops, redundant post. Apparently so many poeple listen to their iPods on shuffle they are trying to tap into that.

If It's cheap I may want one.
