iPod Shuffle - 512MB for $99 and 1GB for $149.99.

Sounds okay. "No LCD screen" is kind of a dealbreaker, though.

Thing is, how much of a bitch is it going to be to upgrade the drive to a DVD burner combo if Apple doesn't offer the option?

At most, I'd expect to be able to up the memory, MAYBE the hard drive. Apple's "closed" designs, like the gumdrop and lamp iMacs and Cube can't really go further than that.

Ladies and gentlemen: the iPod Shuffle. No screen. Weighs less than an ounce.

A memory stick with an MP3 decoder and no real control over your music. Teh innovative! Bah, me want know more about new Mac.

no screen = retarded

So Apple has announced 2 new products WITHOUT screens? Those Apple R&D folks must be on some crazy pills. WTF.

Gimme something else Jobs - with a god damn screen!

512 MB - $99.

Shipping today.

As far as price goes, that's not bad, but the lack of a screen will be an issue with people. Maybe a remote with an inline display will be sold seperately?

Rather lame how they are short changing Mac Mini customers on DVD burning....particularly when that sort of thing has been the company's focus for the last few years.

No keyboard included. No mouse included. Must buy costly external DVD burner. The "cheap" Mac sure did get expensive quickly. ;)

A flash mp3 player???

APPLE INNOVATION KNOWS NO BOUNDS!

Say what you want, a lot of people will pick this up, especially for the iTunes functionality. Putting that Apple iPod name out front will move those units.

iPod Shuffle

iPod Shuffle is something that I have a problem with. Jobs said the most popular way to listen to music on iPod was using shuffle right? Did he ever stop to consider why? I usually listen to my iPod at least once a day on the train either going to or coming back from work. It's a pain in the ass to pull the iPod out of my pocket and look at the screen and go to the tracks I want. It's also a pain in the ass to randomly shuffle the song library. So before using the pod I carefully prearrange a playlist for what I want to listen to that day and spend my whole train trip shuffling back and forth in it.

HOWEVER if the damn remote had a display on it I'd use that to listen to whatever i wanted to listen to without having to prearrange what I want to listen to before heading to the train station. I was really hoping Apple would unveil a LCD remote with a pretty large screen. I'd pay extra for it! Instead they release a new product based on customer behavior that is a result of their iPod remote lacking an LCD....

*sigh*

The purpose of the remote is so you can hide the larger audio player in a bag for example. With an mp3 player that size, there's really no point connecting an equally-sized remote when you could just integrate a screen in the first place.

Oh i know it will

Its just sad

Give me a Sirius Ipod and I'll suck your bawls, Jobs.
This is ZZzz stuff

Either iPod Shuffle should have an inline integrated screen and clip to you like an remote...
or they should release a LCD remote that clips to you and works across all the iPod line.

Going into a pocket or bag to go to a song or playlist you like is a PITA.

Underwhelmed. They're both cool, but you can see that they don't want to cut into the sales of iPod mini or the iMac, so both are crippled a bit deliberately. I wish the Mac mini was a living room, Tivo-like device. I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the iPod mini as well, but now Apple is obviously right about it.

Kind of resembles an oversized futuristic tampon, well, in the picture anyways. In real-life it no doubt looks like a microscopic futuristic tampon, as those it expands as...I'm...I'm going to end this comparison now.

You can add a Superdrive to the Mini for $100. SO people can burn DVDs.

But if they want a decent amount of RAM-- Owitch! That's expensive.

not really. they're targeting those preppy iPod owners who don't own a Mac already, making this nothing more than a glorified iPod accessory. i'm interesting in learning why they refused to put USB/Firewire ports in the front, especially considering the keychain memstick focus on the iPod shuffle.

The iPod shuffle is great. Sounds like I can easily synch that thing with iTunes (like a USB flash storage device) and load up 3-5 albums/playlists. Then play them all day in order. The screen is totally un-necessary. Sounds very cool.

Wow, all this talk. Lawsuits. Hype. All of it.

For a flash-based MP3 stick? Those have been out forever.

What a fucking ripoff. What a disappointment.

... Apple = Stagnant!

Is the ipod shuffle just a white flash mp3 player with shuffle as a forced option? Shuffle just being randomise right?

Barely sounds like an ipod, sounds more like a glorified USB stick with mp3 capabilities.

iPod Shuffle makes it all-the-more clear that prices on proper iPods aren't coming down anytime soon.....so in that sense, this was just an extension of last year's disappointment (where we all hoped that the iPod Mini would be $150 or less).

I like that the Shuffle plugs directly into the USB port, though. Every flash player should work like that.

The no-screen thing won't matter if the remote has one... This thing does have an inline remote...doesn't it?

Except neither the iPod or iPod Mini, both of which you can purchase for $100-$150 are heavy or big. They're incredibly small. And have the same battery life as the iPod Shuffle. And the iPod Mini has 4x the HD space of the iPod Shuffle, and the iPod (starting at 20GB) has 20x the space.

And the both have screens.

This is the worst device ever.

Sounds about right. Decent price, though.

Totally agree - it will probably sell though, but teh innovative it's not. Seems with these 2 new products (miniMac), Apple is catering to the blind. :D

Buddy of mine who doesn't currently have an mp3 player said he would get one just for taking to the gym. It has begun.

mightynine said:
You tell me where I can buy one for that price, and I wouldn't be interested in the shuffle.

I meant $100-$150 more, but go ahead and get the Shuffle. It's a ripoff. You can get 512MB/1GB sticks WITH SCREENS and more features for around the same price to $200.

Bunch of crap.

On eBay, and maybe not a current generation of the hardware. Apple's pricing policies are fairly strict.

Apple doesn't exist in a vacuum. I'm not exactly singing the praises of the iPod Shuffle - I think it's a clever marketing solution to a forced design, but their pricing is most certainly *not* out of line for the Flash players, judging purely by size.

It seems like it competes decently on price, at least. What do other 512M/1G flash players sell for?

I think the market here is teh kiddies, really. Why do you think Linsey Lohan was doing a commercial for them?

Which is exactly what the Shuffle is aiming for IMO: those who want an iPod, but don't need an absurd amount of storage space (to them) for their songs. You don't need more than 240 songs for the gym, I would think.
