The biggest weakness with Steam & Steam Deck... downloads

The only time when installing a videogame took hours was a Fitgirl release.

Installing a 50 gig + game on Steam Deck is a pain in the ass because you have to leave the screen on. It never took hours for me but the screen turns off after a while and you have to turn it back on. Simple issue that seems like it would be easy to fix but deck has been out for a few years now and they never did anything about it. It’s mildly annoying.

You mean you have to have the screen on the Steamdeck OLED actually on at all times while you download?

I wish I could let it turn the screen off while downloading. It’s not difficult. Not even a rest/sleep mode….just turn the screen off.

I'm able to download Arkham Knight with all of its DLC - an install size nearly as big as RDR2's - in about an hour with a Starlink internet connection of ~200MB, the default Starlink router and over wi-fi only.

In what world then are Steam downloads on the Deck really an issue? People in big cities have internet speeds that should blast these numbers, and if you happen to live in a small town with not as good of an internet infrastructure, then just move to Starlink and your Steam downloads situation would be fixed.

It was the first thing I tried on my og SD, putting it into sleep mode to see if it downloads in the background. I was surprised it did not. Currently on the SD oled if I have to download a game, I just put the screen on the lowest brightness and let the consoles do its thing.

You can transfer games directly to your deck. Turn on "Game file transfer over local network" in settings->download if you have the same games installed on your main pc. Then get a cheap dock off of amazon with gigabit ethernet and keep your deck docked. Also go into power settings and set sleep after 1hr. I do sometimes treat mine like my Xbox and just go in periodically and manually update the games.

There is a workaround with reshadedeck that has an option to turn off screen, but I agree they should work on having a download sleep mode option in the next deck.
Also if your on the same network with your PC on (and have the game installed on your pc) it should download from your computer rather than steams servers.

While I do agree there should be an option to download in sleep (background downloading is an option already, and will mess up performance while gaming) - the argument against it is that if you have 400-800GB of updates, that's going to zap your battery overnight as the CPU pushes through all the encryption.

You'll put it to sleep with 90% battery and in the morning it'll have like 20% left. So maybe only it does that while it's charging?

SteamOS also needs a hibernate feature - sleep has gotten a little too hungry in exchange for doing almost nothing.

I can do that too. My Internet speeds are good. This isn't about internet speeds, this is about the download functionality itself being really poorly thought out.

Ok, there are workarounds and it might not be the biggest issue in the world but I can't understand why so many ridicule and play down OP's perfectly reasonable critique. Jeez.

I mean, he's 100% right

I think sleep mode downloads are big console advantage, yet pc fanatics try laugh it off or suggest genius fixes like getting fast internet.

Something I really like about the PS5: downloads and updates while being in sleep mode. Wish my Windows 11 PC and SD could do that.

It's understandable that you can't play games while downloading- this takes up CPU usage. But you can't even turn the console off while doing it, you either have to find a charging station or waste battery for a game. It's lame! Imagine this problem on the OLED models where burn-in is a concern, how do you do it?

The things you talk about were understandable in the PS3 era. Not today. If my PS5 was up to such shenanigans I'd have chucked it out the window. I have no patience for hijinks or tomfoolery in my gaming life. Such skulduggery is best left out to people who like jiggery-pokery. But this guy here is not up for monkey-business of any kind!

Downloads fucking suck. You can't play games, you can't leave the device to sleep, you basically are forced to leave the screen on and let the thing slowly download the game

this would be less of a problem if there were a wired transfer function where you could go from PC to Deck (and vise versa) but no, there's only a wireless WIFI function for this (which is painfully slow as opposed to transferring files over USB) you just have to sit there and watch... as the system downloads... for up to 5 hours at a time. Imagine downloading RDR2 or GTA5 or Tekken 8 on this thing. It's hell! Especially when compared to consoles where you can download while in rest mode. Power is saved and you can do whatever you want while the console is doing it's thing.
