BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said Friday it agreed to pay $612.5 million to patent holding company NTP to settle a long-running dispute that had threatened to shut down the popular wireless e-mail service.

Canadian-based Research in Motion (Research) announced the settlement late Friday ahead of a U.S. judge's expected ruling on damages in the case.

Under the settlement, NTP granted RIM the right to keep running its BlackBerry business, the company said in a statement.

The agreement has been finalized and NTP's lawsuit against RIM has been dismissed by a court order, the Canadian company said.

The settlement means no further court proceedings or decisions about damages are necessary, RIM said.

RIM also issued a warning Friday, lowering it's 4th quarter revenue projections.

"This is an extremely positive development for RIM. The settlement announcement basically makes the pre-warning irrelevant," said Peter Misek, an analyst with Canaccord Capital. "There's a lot of pent-up demand for RIM products, and competitors have not been able to capitalize on this."

"This settlement was less than Wall Street expected," he said.

The price of RIM's shares was halted at $72.00 at 4:37 p.m. in anticipation of the announcement.

Shares in RIMM soared once they began trading after-hours.

612.5m might sound like alot... but in the end it'll be nothing to RIM, nothing at all...

This is kinda funny since RIM was blowing smoke around that they had found a way to bypass the patent and maintain functionality. Good stuff.

what kind of gifts? like a car?
Last christmas it was an Ipod Nano with my name on it, literally. Usually I don't get a gift from them because, well he's WAY too busy to be thinking about things like birthdays, hell I haven't seen him in 3 years. But usually my aunt and uncle give me something good, if they aren't on some cruise somewhere.

It wasn't smoke it actually does work(the patch was available for download and a white paper was released on it), but why take the chance of creating additional technical problems?

Yeah, the workaround works but would require the entire userbase to apply a patch which, given the broad nature of RIM consumers, would have have been a major headache.

Anyways it gave RIM enough leverage to force the dumbass patent holding company into an agreement that wouldn't have given them a percentage of RIM profits forever (which is what they wanted). They got an extra 200 mill to save face though.

Funny...a couple months ago I didn't know a Blackberry from a Black Nano. But I guess it's been an extremely popular gadget for years now. Anyway, glad this suit got settled.
