The Criterion Collection in 2017: All Fancy Movie GAF Releases Welcome!

You gotta be kidding me with that Re-Animator. I just shelled out a decent amount for the Second Sight steelbook a few months ago.

Sigh. So goes the life of a film collector.

Edit: I just realized that this is probably using the same scan as the Second Sight blu, so that makes it easier to pass up. Kind of.

Okay so Studiocanal is launching a new-ish sublabel (and I still adore their covers):
Their output with the Vintage Classics line has been really solid, so hope they'll continue in that spirit. No word about an American release (because of course there isn't), but I think this one might actually be with Criterion and not Lionsgate.

So I'm guessing this means Criterion won't be putting out La Strada.

I'm still kinda pissed at B&N for explicitly putting Criterions on the "no coupon" list during the sale. I know it's still a good price, but I guess I got spoiled by being able to use them pretty liberally in the past. I didn't participate in the sale during November, and I won't be this time around either. I also cancelled my membership, and let them know that was the reason why.

I don't get this logic. The movies go on sale for 50 percent off and your B&N gives you an additional 10 percent off the discount price. That is a great deal. I know a lot of people were upset they couldn't exploit the sales but I am glad they changed it up.

I know last November sale I got a shit ton of films for like 18 dollars.

B&N sales are how much % off again? Might wait for that for stalker and rumble fish. Criterion prices in Canada are extortionate lol

Edit: dude already answered above

Well, when you've gotten 100 or more titles at $13, $18 is a pretty large jump. Am I being a little silly? Probably, as $18 is probably the best you'll see outside of random titles going on sale somewhere. However, it's a principle thing for me. If that makes me an asshole, so be it.

Sure I can see how older costumers wild be peeved but you are still getting the movies cheaper than any other competitor. 18 dollars is a fucking steal for some of these movies with the special packaging and booklets.

Didn't we just get a good Twin Peaks release. Seems weird to release it, but who knows.

This is true, but it's only available as part of the box set with the show. The only thing I could think is if Criterion is going to release it and add back in The Missing Pieces for the definitive version.

I would have to think that a standalone release of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me would have an audience. Then again, I would have to think that any Lynch film would be a good seller for Criterion.

Apparently, the most recent issue of the Twin Peaks set dropped most of the FWWW extras, so there is some value to be regained.

I would think this is will be package with the Lynch documentary? A solo Fire Wok With Meat is a bit of a strange pickup otherwise.

Oh, that's a good point. I can't imagine that it would be the normal $40 MSRP if it's included, though that never seemed to stop His Girl Friday and other similar films with big separate feature inclusions.

I didn't know Buena Vista Social Club went Criterion. I saw it when it hit DVD a while ago. I wasn't that into the film, but I loved the music.

I'm pretty sure if he was still alive, Suzuki would approve of the art direction for that set. What a gorgeous package Arrow has put together.

I almost jumped on those steelbooks when I got the e-mail about them, but having gotten the regular Blu-rays only 6 months or so ago, I can't really justify it. Plus, half the things I get shipped to me have slight damage to them, so I can see me getting 3 steelbooks with dents all over them. I've never had any luck with steelbooks.

I was excited by the steelbook announcement until I saw the covers. They Live is one of the big Scream Factory releases I don't own because it's pretty difficult to find it with a slipcover without paying way too much. I would just go ahead and buy it without the slip but every other Scream title I have has the slip with it. So yeah, I'm one of those people.

Does anyone have any experience with Cronenberg's Rabid? I just saw it for the first time and it's absolutely wonderful. I see there's a Shout Factory release :D

Watched it back in October. I liked it but thought the ending was a let down. Marilyn Chambers was legit though, it's too bad she couldn't have had more of a career outside of the porn industry.

I guess Shock Treatment is pretty nice, it's no Rocky Horror but still.
(side note: Ronin is such a boring film, and this is an objective fact)

Wow, did not expect Ronin to land at Arrow. That seems like the kind of film that would be more in Kino's wheelhouse. A spiffy new version of Don't Torture a Duckling is much appreciated, though I can't imagine that the makeup effects in the ending will look any better in HD!

Why has Ronin used the same goddamn picture of DeNiro in that blue tint on every box? Can't get a little creative? Does Criterion need to pick it up because I love their art for Manchurian Candidate and Seconds. Arrow you disappoint on that one, because Duckling looks fantastic.

Heh, I just realized that the cover for Don't Torture a Duckling is a teensy bit on the spoiler-y side, though you would had to have seen the film to pick up why that is.

Ronin was rumoured for a while. Kino is however, for some reason, releasing one of the absolutely best American films of the 1960s (They Shoot Horses, Don't They?). I really hope that it ends up with MoC in region B land, that film deserves the deluxe treatment.
Your objective fact is the cake, and I pity you for ignoring one of the better crime films of that decade.
I'm not ignoring it, I've watched the thing. I'm just being hyperbolic.

Oh I know, as was my response. Watch it again and relish in performances from god's gift to casts. And cynical realism following the fall of the cold war? Oh my. I'm watching it tonight!

It's actually a really snappy film after the first act.

And also the worst and most pointless use of CGI in film!

But yeah, Ronin is boss.
