Yet another book thread...I know....but still, I just read up on SciFi's upcomming series based on these novels and realized...I never even heard of these books before...

so, how are they? from the amazon.com reader reviews I could spot they all seem pretty good

From what I could see, the books are:

A wizard of Earthsea
The Tombs of Atuan
The Farthest Shore

please, let me know what you think of these books...and if you feel there is better fantasy to read, by all means suggest :D

Their excellent, and well worth reading. Their also somewhat short so you could knock out the trilogy without much time. She also wrote 1 or 2 sequels to the initial 3. Number 4 at least is complete and utter shite.

I'm glad you brought this up because I was wondering myself. Sci-Fi has been pimping miniseries/movie pretty heavily and once or twice they had a Border's commercial featuring the EarthSea novels.

I read A Wizard of Earthsea and The Tombs Atuan about 8 or 9 years ago when I was in highschool. I enjoyed them both, though Atuan was a little dry, IIRC. The first book was excellent.

For the genre, the Earthsea books are right up there in the top 10% of fantasy work. In my opinion, in a world full of Robert Jordan neverending crap-a-thons and over-inflated sequel-fests, Leguin's books are like fine shots of whiskey- dry, short, to the point, and eminently satisfying.

Yeah, I try to steer clear of most fantasy novels I don't know about out of the fear they will be another Jordan.

The funny thing about Jordan is he knows exactly how the series will end, but he has no clue how to get it there.

To be specific, I have tons of respect for Wizard of Earthsea, Tombs of Atuan, and Farthest Shore. Tehanu didn't impress me all that much, and I haven't read the new books. Tehanu felt like revisionism- that Leguin had changed some of her personal beliefs vis-a-vis relationships later in life, and written the book from that perspective. I should probably give it another read or two, though.

Yeah re-read those 4 recently...still enjoyable. Also, if you're looking for some good, interestingly written, non-generic fantasy then you should try reading some Robin Hobb...Liveship Chronicles is a trilogy and the Assasin trilogy...great stuff, very addictive.
