The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

That seems very low; abnormally low. Are you sure all your hardware is running at proper frequencies? Are your drivers up to date?

Also, AF shouldn't have any impact on your framerate with a decently modern card, and the default game AA isn't very taxing either it seems. Neither of those should be your problem.

Yeah that's why I mentioned about my BSOD issues, not sure if some of my hardware isn't performing properly so trying to figure out if it's a driver issue or something in my new build. Just finished running a 16 hour memtest86 so that rules that out. Was curious if anyone with a similar rig could comment on what fps I should be getting on those settings.

Go into your options and turn down AA and AF. They're set to an absurdly high default. Change it to 4x for both.

Will try that and see how I get on.

Woah, the FPS gain I get by turning vsync off (correctly) is pretty huge. But now I'm annoyed with the tearing :| What to do D:

What driver/CAP do you have installed? Crossfire support is sketchy right now for this game.

Have to admit this the first time I have build a PC from scratch so not sure what the CAP acronym means. Installed the default ATI drivers that came with the GPU, BF3 prompted me to upgrade to 11.7 drivers which I did. I have a Z68 mobo and installed the drivers that came on the disk. I bought a mobo/RAM/CPU/cooler bundle that was pre-overclocked, which is apparently OC'ed from 3.3ghz to 4.6hz.

I do have a spare 750 PSU lying about, plus non SSD HDD, plus old graphics card to try out. Was planning on trying to update any drivers I can, leave it a few days to a week to identify how often the BSOD happens, then systematically change one component and test it for a few days.

With crossfire you need to install Catalyst Application Profiles (CAPS) for some games to get better scaling, right now there is no CAP out that is specific for Skyrim but you can try the latest along with the latest driver released.

Adjusting the gamma while using the FXAA injector has made a huge difference with the darkness. It didn't bother me much before but in caves it can get bad at times.
What settings are you using?

Seriously, how does anyone play this game with iPresentInterval=0!?

The fps dependent vertical sensitivity is soooo terrible; it's unplayable!

Is there any way to fix this? Anyone know? If it's true that disabling vsync gives you better performance in general, I'd like to do so, but not if it screws up my mouse sensitivity.

What? No. I was just noticing the gear quality the guy had and was wondering what level you get it.

I also wanted to know how you figure out what your framerate is.

Recently built a new rig:

i5 2500 OC'ed to 4.6ghz
8gb RAM
CF 6970
125gb SSD
Dual 24" monitors

Been having fairly frequent BSOD only when waking from sleep/powering on so trying to diagnose and rule things out. With everything set to Ultra I was only getting 15-20 fps, changing to High changed average fps to 30 according to fraps. Does this seem low for my rig?

Something is messed up. I have a weaker setup (Same CPU, single 6950 unlocked, 8GB ram, minus the SSD and Dual Monitors) and while playing on Ultra in 1080p I have been getting 40-60fps in towns and 80-100+ indoors. On a full tweaked out .ini file with everything maxed I am still getting 30+ in town and 40+ inside.

haven't had one crash yet

I looked into it more and it was the ini posted on this page that reminded me to check m SkyrimPrefs ini and under the SD3Device it had ENB there. CRISIS AVERTED. Now to tyr this large address aware patch....
Still getting the popin in whiterun though?

I started using a small amount of 'Pre-sharpen' from the FXAA Injector. I like how the textures looked more detailed even though it's fake 'detail'. I'll post shots when GAF is online in 15 hours time.

Triple Buffering works through RadeonPro? Nice. Will enable that once I get home.

But... does triple buffering work with Crossfire? I'm using the Oblivion crossfire profile in RadeonPro right now. Dual 2GB 6950s BTW.

nope its not possible its one or the other

I am so glad neogaf is back

I was fiddling with someone's suggested ini & settings and ended up updating my drivers (nvidia) to the latest beta - performance seems to have taken a hit since the last drivers I was using, which was I think around ~260.xx?

Umm, is there a way to boost the audio? Because even on max, with my headphones on full and loudness equalization on(a combination that would normally leave me with hearing damage) this game is stupidly quiet. What the fuck?

So ive been keeping an eye out for mods that i think would interest me and going from the comments on how magic doesnt scale very well here is a mod that some might want to check out.

Improved Destruction Magic by Penumbral
This mod includes several improvements to Destruction magic to make Destruction damage scale as well as other kinds of damage, and also adds some stronger specialization possibilities. It includes several ESPs, each modifying one particular aspect of magic. They are:

Improved Runes.esp:

Increased rune base damage to 75.
Increased maximum rune count to 3.

Improved Master Spells.esp:

Increased Lightning Storm's base damage per second to 135.
Increased Blizzard's base damage per second to 30.
Changed Fire Storm to be instant cast. Left its damage alone.

Improved Expert Spells.esp:

Increases the base damage of the following expert spells so they scale nicer at mid-to-high tier compared to other damage builds.
Increased Incinerate's base damage to 70.
Increased Thunderbolt's base damage to 70.
Increased Icy Spear's base damage to 70.

Improved Cloaks.esp:

Increases the base damage of cloak spells so they're worth casting more often than not. In particular, increased base damage of all cloak spells from 8 to 12.

Improved Casting.esp:

Small changes to dual casting to make it feel a bit more powerful than it does in vanilla Skyrim.
Increased dual casting effectiveness boost to 2.5 from 2.2.
Increased dual casting time multiplier to 1.25 from 1.

Improved Destruction Perks.esp:

Augmented Shock/Flame/Frost perks now have 3 ranks and increase damage by 20% each rank.
Expert Destruction now also increases Destruction spell damage by 10%.
Master Destruction now also increases Destruction spell damage by 15%.

Still getting the popin in whiterun though?

GAF was down but popup gone! I still get some small and none bothersome texture flickers in distant horizons and have had 1 TINY patch of grass flicker but overall I'm happy. We need a patch as I've had hard freezes too many times though (maybe 4 times). But the large address aware patch seemed to take care of the small texture pop-in and the more apparent later issues in Whiterun.

Dual casting and doing a combined firebolt (not sure with icespike and so) make ALL enemies get knocked back which is overpowered since I can do that all day long against all enemies and kill them... even dragoons.

Have you tried the game without the crazy overclock?

Thanks Mairu and Nostalgic Nightmare!

Did both suggested and haven't had a single CTD in about 4 hours of play. Cant believe I have over 70 hours logged into this game...so you can imagine my frustration with CTD's every 10 minutes.

Seriously, thanks a ton.

Are there any mods which increase the amount of gold merchants carry? I know there are Speech perks related to such, but seeing as I loot and sell just about everything I find (my character has a carrying capacity of ~5000), I'm not sure they'd be overly helpful.

Oh, I hadn't heard about magic not scaling. I just started last night and had intended to go pure magic. The mod itself sounds a little iffy, though, particularly the dual casting "upgrade" sounds like a nerf to me. The increased damage is totally offset by the increase in time if my math is correct.

Catalyst 11.11 does nothing to improve performance. Still CTDs and freezes.

ATI. Never. Again. Ever.

I am pretty pissed about the cfx situation, but the freezing and CTD are more than likely game related not driver. Everyone is having issues, nvidia and AMD. Hopefully the next patch will fix it some.

I haven't heard anyone complaining about magic being too weak, tbh. Not sure where the need for that buff is actually coming from.

Oh god I love the FXAA Post Processing Injector so much.
How does that thing even work? It says put the files in the directory of the game, so I do, and it does nothing. Are there secret instructions only people in the special club get?

I'm a pure mage, magic feels powerful enough in vanilla.

Did you press the pause/break key while in-game? This isn't mentioned in the readme.txt file that accompanies the various FXAA folders, strangely enough.

So has anyone been having problems where the game will randomly close out to the desktop? It happened rarely for me but now 50+ hours in it's happening a little more frequently, twice in about 2 hours last night. Thankfully the game auto saves so much I don't lose much but it's still really annoying.

Being able to up the saturation with the injector in this game is such a relief. Like your character having some sort of eye operation that fixes your colour vision so you can actually see colour again.

I just wish that there were some really dark areas in the game. I understand how with a huge moon that is always full and snow coating the ground it's never really going to get that dark outside. What really annoys me is how every ancient hidden dungeon is regularly serviced by gnomes who got a bulk discount at the skyrim candle and lamp emporium.

I'm only 3 hours into the game and I've had it happen several times. I found the primary cause, though - Dxtory. It would cause a crash while loading a new area. Very disappointed, however I got a performance increase (like double the framerate) after using that performance enhancement DLL for nVidia, so I guess I don't need it to limit the game to 30 FPS anymore since I'm at 60 almost all the time now.

Quite a lot of people are. My stability seems to have increased the further I've progressed (I'm currently ~35 hours in), though the other day I experienced four crashes within a 20 minute period.

Yes, and it did nothing in any of the games it was supposed to be functional with.

The only other cause that comes to mind is that you've copied the folder/s to skyrim\common instead of the contents therein (injFX_Shaders folder, d3d9.dll, injFX_Settings.h, and so on).

There really needs to be an OOO for this game. It's far too easy, far too soon. I think I've killed 15+ dragons and they've all been the easiest kills ever. I just take the hit from his fire breath(or even better my horse will take it for me) and I just hack away.

Oh and companions need to be able to die from enemies as well, instead of just from you.

I employed the services of the AI companion found in The Bannered Mare (Whiterun) and she was overcome by a group of bandits.

Right now the only mod I want is one that disables collision between the player and his summons >_>

That would be epic.

As far as CTD go, I was gettin a bunch, but they have pretty much gone away after making the game large address aware, and I try to Alt-Tab as little as possible as, empirically, I was getting more crashes after an Alt-Tab than I was during sessions w/ no Alt-Tabing

OP is full of info and tweaks but it seems more for users with high rigs, or it wont say what the tweak is for...

My setup :

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4400 @ 2.00GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
Memory: 3072MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

Not high end whatsoever bug higher than required specs. I play with everything set to low (horrible draw distance, I'll walk in a field and a fence will pop up 1 second before I reach it)

my problem : in big fights, my fps gets low (around 10-15). In the open world fps is great but in dungeons when fighting, it's horrible.

Are there a few easy tweaks I could do?

So I've played this game for 20 hours now, and I'm on a random boat looting around when the game freezes....okay no big deal it's only my 2nd freeze. I had to log off and back on to end Skyrim from running, log back in and same problem. I revert back to 285.62 (figuring it might be the beta drivers) just booted it up and the same problem occurred.

I have done the sound tweaks (changing to 24 bit, etc) is there something else I am missing?

I've been playing pure mage on expert and I haven't had any problems yet ("only" level 18 though). It's infinitely more viable (and fun) than in vanilla Oblivion.

weird, my companions never die unless I kill them myself. Whenever they're about to die they just go on one knee like the other unkillable characters in the game and the enemies see them as non hostile until they get up again.

Freeze of full blown CTD? The game never really "froze up" on me, it just CTD every 30mins-1hr. I've tried a whole slew of tweaks and couldn't find anything to fix the issue.

So, I decked out Lydia in full crafted dwarf armor, all enchanted. I decided to leave her at my house for a few of the DB quests due to her hosing my sneak. I did quite a few quests and killed a dragon so was overburdened. Decided to go to my house to unload all of my scales and bones and Lydia is waiting for me inside....

All of her armor/weapons are gone. She's back to her default armor set/weapon. WTF?
