The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

I take back everything I said, the Enhanced Shader is awesome, I think I'll suffer the 30 FPS I get from it...

I've only tried out the improved fire and water mods but they definitely look a lot better. No real performance hit either. I'll probably try out the face and body mods later when I can figure out how to set the order without a mod manager, tried the nexus manager but I can't find a way to change the order.

Most of those should be just texture mods with no esm/esp.

Eh I installed most of the mods from the last few pages and I'm getting 10-20 fps. How are you all not getting huge fps drops?

I just wanted to say that even though this game might not be amazing "tech-wise" the art design and atmosphere not only make up for it but it's unparalleled...

No words can describe how amazing that looks... especially in motion.

I was really impressed by the FXAA Injector, but hated the blurriness. Vaseline filters need to die. So I played with the settings, sharpening while lowering the blur and god a very respectable medium. Really wanted those color settings as it makes the game pop much better...

than I summoned a Flame Atronach.

Sweet Jesus, it looks incredible with the color changes.

I must be the only person who prefers vanilla art direction to all the super saturated, technicolor, blue shift crap people are doing with fxaa injectors and "enhanced" shaders.

But at least there is something for everyone.

Same here. Tried a couple of configs, but they all look awful to me.

Is there a mod that allows FP view on horses? For some reason third person view in an Elder Scrolls game feels... off to me, I guess that's because I've been playing the series in FP for 12 years. I wouldn't imagine it'll be that hard to achieve, but then again I'm not a modder.

I guess there hasn't been any fixes for the constant random crashes yet?... so frustrating.

Anyone have else have problems with the game exiting to desktop, without any error messages? Happened to me for the time tonight. Two within 10 minutes. Already had large address aware enabled on the .exe

That's what I'm talking about. No-one else seems to notice it though.

So I broke down and tried the "enhanced shader" mod. It made the game unbearably darker, no matter how much I jacked up the brightness every time I enabled the enhanced shaders it just seems so.... DARK. I even tried messing with the settings and deleting the palette file to see if I could get it to do JUST sharpening with no color modifications, but alas, enable it and DARKNESS.

Well, never mind with that mod.

Yeah, this is extremely annoying... Just crashed for the 3rd time tonight..

Think I've figured out why everyone is having these crashes, and also why it occurs more often as you play the game longer/get further in the game. Just not sure if it can be fixed 100%. Will post results once I figure it out.

Do you guys getting crashes have your sound set to 44100Hz?

I had mine set higher than that, and had problems.

It happened to me occasionally for the first 40 hours and then after that it kept happening a bunch of times. Really annoying bug.

I don't know, whatever the default settings were. My first playthrough I didn't mess with anything or add any mods and other than the random crashes it worked great.

edit: Oh for speakers. Yeah it's higher than that but I've never had a problem in any game at the setting it's on before :(

Have mine on 24bit, 44100Hz , previously it was 16bit, 44100Hz.

**Edit** I changed it to 24bit, due to having low dialogue volume and/or it cutting off. Which it fixed that problem.

I will have your children if you figured it out.

Mine was at 48000Hz, I hope that was the problem... Thanks for pointing it out.

The crashing started for me today, really bad. I'm pretty sure its to do with the game having to remember all the stuff you have done, and adjust the game etc . The longer you play the more it has to figure out. It strtd now for me at lvl 50 in the middle of the civil war quests.

I hope 1.2 fixes it but that's a while away

Honestly, I'm beginning to fear modding this game is going to be a huge clusterfuck if Bethsoft doesn't patch things up and stabilize it. Oblivion, FO3, and FO: New Vegas all were a clusterfuck to get running stably when a bunch of mods were active.

Here's hoping Bethsoft is willing to go the distance to make things work correctly. Lol.

This is probably 90% of the problem, actually. Also, I recommend disabling auto-saves. Apparently on all the previous games they caused save game corruption, and save game corruption is obvious when you fast travel and it crashes.

I wonder if there's a way to 'fix' the save-games. I'm researching a method now to see if it works.

These random crashes are driving me insane! not to mention making me extremely paranoid... sometimes I just take a steam screenshot and it crashes, sometimes I sprint and crashes, it can happen with almost anything and forces me to play with the utmost "care".

Fix this Bethesda.

May or may not be fixable. These issues have been present in Oblivion, FO3, and FO:NV. Let's see what they can do.

Using LAA fixed all my crashes, haven't had one in like 50 hours (of gameplay time) now.

Also I like the FPS limiter but is there anyway to fix the screen tearing it causes? I have it locked at 30 but still get crazy tearing.

My crashes nearly always involved dragons. When textures starting missing and were replaced by blue frames (usually walls), I knew that I was a fast travel or a dragon appearance away from an immediate to desktop without error. The very first time it happened was when a dragon a bit north of Riften aggrod. It landed, and I think as soon as I made the final hit to kill I went to desktop. So maybe the game save thing fits, but then again dragons seem to appear more often later in the game. I think I had 2 once.

Yeah, it could just be a flaw entrenched in their code. They say it's a new engine, but I'm sure they reused a bunch of stuff and many of the people that coded the last one coded this one. If you don't know why it's broken, you're going to code it again. You don't recode a game like this in 2 years...then again I'm not in game software design, but I do code with iterative releases.

In New Vegas the strip would crash 100% of the time in some areas if you attacked. Suspect it's because the engine couldn't handle some 50+ people fleeing/attacking.

I can tolerate it because Bethesda's games offer a unique experience, but only because I have the PC version with a command terminal to fix it. For console gamers a show stopper bug is a show stopper.

Another reason why I think they reuse code is that the "2 music tracks playing simultaneously" bug is still there. I remember that from fallout3.

And tons of NPCs reacting to a dragon...sort of similar to a bunch of NPCs reacting to a gunman on the strip.

As far as I can tell most of my crashes took place like 30 seconds or so after entering a new area. I never lost much time due to them because of that and my saves were never corrupted so it happens after the game saves.

I use Dxtory to limit it to 30 FPS and D3DOverrider for vsync/triple buffering and have no tearing.

I've never had a crash on the PC version, but I have a persistent bug with the Steed Stone where when I load a quicksave it doesn't recognize I have the Steed Stone and considers me overencumbered for around 30 seconds. It's quite annoying. I generally respond by dropping 100 pounds of gear and picking it back up, but it kind of defeats the purpose of quicksaving. I might just give that up and go back to the Lover Stone since it's just as annoying as not having 100 pounds of gear.

Hey guys! just a really quick questions. All of these mods look nice but the only thing that really bothers me is not being able to in the distance very well. Which mod/mods would be good to fix that?

I think that's uGrids, but that's asking for crashes I think.

Aaaand crashed again... 4th crash of the night, in less than 2 hours.

I played 30 hours over the weekend, only one freeze (because I'd set the settings to ultra and had AMD overdrive on, GPU temp was 110F, AMD 5770 1GB). Otherwise, with lower settings and overdrive off, it's been a treat. No crashes whatsoever.

I do have a weird duel wielding bug where I have to unweild everything to get certain weapons on certain hands (it's hard to explain, just google it). I finally figured out that if you jam mouse 1 and mouse 2 at the same time while trying to dual weild a weapon it kinda fixes it, again, hard to explain. Otherwise I have had seen no issues. This is far less buggy for me than I would've expected from these guys (there have been the occasional avatar's glitching and whatnot but I don't think they merit discussion, as most have been caused by me bumping into someone as they're walking or whatever).

Fantastic game. :)

Edit: Nevermind.

The post process injector mod keeps making Skyrim crash at launch :( Any ideas?

I haven't used it with this game, but I remember one of the specal DLLs I tried using with New Vegas would crash if I used Afterburner's on-screen display or Dxtory with it. If you have anything that shows something in the corner of the screen in an overlay, that may be the cause.

I wonder how hard that would to remove item scaling from stores. I think this won't be hard. You should hunt for these precious crafting components.

Woah, hold up.

So that FXAA injector thing has never worked with any game. Now I'm reading instructions on one and it says back up the original file. None of my games have d3d9.dll in their folder. I'm running admin with all files revealed, so what's the deal? Something different for Win7 64bit?

Never worked as in?

Most of these graphic mods look bad.

Yeah, I have to agree. It's definitely subjective, but I spent three hours messing around with texture 'improvements' and shader/fxaa injector modifications, but in the end I went back to vanilla.

I'll check back on the scene in a few months.

That is a concept right? Don't tease us and post a dl link if it's released.

I must admit that using the keyboard to navigate the menus is acceptable 95% of the time. So from thinking that the GUI was worse than Oblivion I went to finding it marginally better.
