The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

What's the clock speed of your CPU? Since it's a laptop it may be letting you down in terms of sequential performance.

Ummm, dxdiag says Intel(R) Corp i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00 GHZ (8 CPUs), ~2.0GHz. Is that the info you're looking for?

Just a reminder that there is a mod to make the 360 controller support 8 hotkeys via the dpad. Can this be added to the mod op liquid when you get a chance, sorry I cant link it I'm on the iPhone. The mod link is in my post near the bottom of the last page.

Is there any such mod for keyboards? I'd like to be able to swap between spells, bows, and swords using the 1-9 keys if possible. Pressing q and selecting from a list is a little unwieldy.

If you want to bring up selection bias, vocal minority or anything of the sort then by all means go ahead, but just don't tell me that the game doesn't have more issues than your average anticipated multimillion dollar budget pc-title.
I wouldn't tell you that, because it's not true. The game clearly does have far more issues than your average "AAA" title. It's also significantly more ambitious, complex and open than the average. Compared to other games PC of similar complexity and ambition (eg. Bethesda's previous games or New Vegas) it fares very well.

That's probably your problem. The game scales a lot with CPU clock speed, not so much (but still a little) with core counts beyond 2.

For 1-8 you don't need a mod, it's already there. Hover over an entry in the "Q" list and press the key you want to assign. We just need a mod for more hotkeys ;)

Press Q, go over a spell and press a numerical key. It's built in.

In the favourites menu (Q) just press any number from 1-8 (only 8 hotkeys) to set that particular thing to a hotkey.

Actually, just as an aside, this reminds me of a perfect recent example of how game "polish" is very much affected by the complexity and ambition of a title, and not so much by the often blamed developer skill. Obsidian was known for making fantastically ambitious and amazing, but also very buggy games. Then they made a game which is a "simple", straightforward Diablolike action romp, and it's almost perfectly bug-free for everyone on release.

Also look at Gothic 3 (and the subsequent downsizing in Risen) as an example. The more you try to do, the more things can go wrong. And sadly it seems like often it's not a linear function. Personally, even when I'm strongly affected by bugs (which I am not in the case of Skyrim), my opinion can be summed up as "a buggy, excellent game will be buggy for a while, a bland, unambitious and polished one will be bland forever".

That's true, if you're GPU limited. I'm running with Aero and there has been no appreciable difference in framerate, but I'm mostly CPU limited in the game anyways. (running at High, 1080p, with a GTX 570 and 2500k @ 4.6GHz)

I believe its actually the opposite, you may not notice that large of a difference at 4.6ghz but if you have a Core 2 Duo at 2.4 like me, the difference is quite large.

I'm sure it isn't GPU related because:
1) Aero is disabled
2) If I run the game with 8xAA and 8xAF I get about 2-5fps lower average than with 0xAA and 0xAF
3) If I run the game windowed I get 10-15fps lower average
4) adding 8xAA and 8xAF will push the GPU more than simple "windowed mode"
5) 8800 GTS 640mb X2 SLI

So my statement still stands, if you are using older hardware than an i-series CPU, beware the FPS drops of windowed mode.

Sorry if it's already been answered but:

Does this iteration of Gamebryo stutter still have the infamous stutter found in PC versions of Oblivion and both Fallouts?

It's was basically baked into the engine and it eventually took the community to develop the scripting engine/script to fix it.

I really need to know as if it is, i won't even bother...

No, it doesn't have the stutter bug.

I think in terms of the scale of the game, Skyrim is relatively low on bugs. This is far and away the most polished Bethesda title I have played, in the 40 hours I have played I have had 3 crashes and only 1 floating mammoth, that's pretty good for a game this complex. Hopefully a few kinks get ironed out for those having issues, cause Skyrim is incredible and it's a shame that some people's experience may be ruined because of some technical problems.

I got today my first two crash to desktop. I haven't changed any options I got them at the exit of a bandit dungeon where I tried to fastravel. (The area is outside but you can't leave, it is blocked). The second time was the same at the same place. Once I left that place I could fast travel with no problem.

I'm sick of having my keys binded totally randomly. Especially when in menus when they tell you F is "favorites" and R is "forge" and whatever. Now I have to push Y to effectively put something in the favorites and the R key never works...
Also, I learned yesterday that dragon souls could be used to unlock shouts, except I have 7 of them and it says I need some souls ... F*** console ports of SHIT!

Make sure you're pressing X and not A to unlock the shouts.

Anyone experiencing CTDs in Riften/around Riften? It's the most bugged city in the game so far(for me anyway), already had 2 CTDs there and several bugs/slowdowns.

Oh my, this is awesome. Definitely gonna try it when I get home.

edit:

Items = B+Left
Magic = B+Right

:/

Yeah I noticed that Left and Right stuff up. Get the 'Classic B menu" file so you can go into the normal menu selection. Or I might see if I can change it.

I made a sun glare mod with subtle changes to make it a bit more realistic:

Left: Default | Right: Modded

Opinions?

FXAA comparisons with these settings: http://pastebin.com/BLT2e1Um (resorted to using pastebin because i don't want to litter the post with many lines of unfamiliar settings)

The first picture will be vanilla followed by the colour tweak:

This one turned out to be quite piss-filter-ish, it's just because it's a sunrise.

Picked it up n steam, about 50 hours in. Noticing the textures in the distance not seeming to look as good, as well as framerate drops when I used to get a solid 60 everywhere. Also a couple of quests bugs showing up.

Makes me sad.

I really like that modded night-time. What/where/how can I do this? I don't want the others, just the night-time mod. Looks so nice!

If you are talking about the FXAA colour tweak, it applies to all types of time.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=131

Download this, download the installer version.
Install it using the No sharpen or anti-aliasing option.
Paste in the code from here: http://pastebin.com/BLT2e1Um

Into the 'injFX_Settings.h' file. (You can open/edit that file with notepad)

What on earth did you do to your 'stock' game? The water's overly transparent: http://minus.com/lFztZdjOQ6QVB

I may have changed the water resolution to default? I'm not even sure why it started happening. I'll test it later, i've got to sleep now.

I thought the 1024 water resolution was breaking some of the water stuff in the game. (purple puddles) But apparently they were flammable liquids or something. (from the screenshot thread)

Vanilla looks a lot more natural to me. The color tweak is adding a lot of blue to the blacks.

edit: yep, just checked it in Paint. The "blacks" in the color tweaked version are 0-0-8 RGB. The blacks in vanilla are 0-0-0 RGB.

I'd have to see it in motion, but that looks quite nice in the pic. Good job.

One of the biggest problems with the shading in Skyrim is that the black is black and is not dependent on the light it is concealing or any bleed.
This doesn't fix that, but it is a better alternative.

I like it when black is black. :o

By the time the next Elder Scrolls rolls around we'll be into the next console cycle so hopefully Gamebryo... sorry The Creation Engine will be upgraded with a decent renderer and lighting system.

Yes. That's the only place I have had a CTD (and one full lockup).

Yeah, that newer one seems to be causing some issues. Use the Quick menu one for the time being. It still gives you the 8 hotkeys, but you access the menu differently.

Also....WTF!!!
