The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Any suggestions for how I should adjust my settings in the game as well as modding and improving my performance for a "medium" PC?
Would like to improve the View distance a bit, if it's possible without taking a hit on the performance.

I am running the game on High at 1920x1080 with the following hardware and settings:

Geforce GTX 460
8 gb RAM
Dual Core (Intel E7500) at 2.93 ghz.
Haven't done any overclocking.

Settings:
Antialiasing: 8
Anisotropic 8
Texture Quality High
Radial Blur: Medium
Shadow Detail: High
Decal Quantity High
FXAA is turned on.
On Water I have selected Reflect Land, Trees, Objects iklickade men inte Reflect Sky.

View Distance:
Object Fade: 7
Light Fade: 25
Actor Fade: 6
Item Fade: 4
Grass Fade:5
Distant Object Detail: High
Specularity Fade: 10
Object Detail Fade is turned off.

I also have a Geforce 9600GT that I could use as a Phys-X-card, will that improve anything in this game?

Edit: would the water mod mean a hit in the performance? Looks lovely. How much difference is there between the high and medium water mod?

Has anyone else discovered a fix for framerate issues in areas with multiple light sources?

As an example, as soon as I get inside the first indoor area in the opening scene, the framerate drops to 10-15fps and doesn't go above 20 until you get outside.

Once I get outside, the framerate is fine; just indoors with multiple light sources, and the framerate drops. As a further example, in Fort Graymoor, the dungeon has a room with multiple candles and chandeliers. As soon as I'm looking at them, my framerate takes a major hit.

Even when I set my settings to Low, the framerate isn't improved when looking at multiple light sources.

My hardware:

HP DV7T
Core 2 Duo T9400 @ 2.53ghz
Geforce 9600M GT 512MB
4GB DDR2 PC2-6400
Native resolution 1680x1050

According to the Bethesda hardware post, my notebook gpu should be able to run the game at Medium-Low.

I've set it to Medium, turned off AA, AF, FSAA and set the shadows to Low. I'm also running the game at 1280x800 (letterbox) and the framerate is very smooth except for the drop with multiple light sources. I'm running the Nvidia 285.79s and have applied the LAA fix to TESV.exe. I've also attempted to use the d3d9.dll fix here and ENB's modified dll as well.

I've also tried every config I could find in this thread and made a custom config using this site; even with all the low settings, there is no change.

I'd like to stress that 95% of the time, the framerate is 40-60 fps, but the few occasions this occurs, it makes it very difficult to hit anything accurately in combat.

Hopefully the new patch improves performance. Aside from this, I'm loving the game.

I have the same specs as you (C2D is a 2.4ghz) and don't have as drastic a drop as you, it never drops below 25 in any areas.

My skyrim.ini and my skyrimprefs.ini. (these were made in conjuction with FXAA injector (my settings), so put the gamma back up if you're not using the it)
You can try lowering "iShadowMapResolution=512" for indoor areas to 256.

e: also add "iFPSClamp=30" (or 60) to the general section of skyrimprefs.ini

Oh yeah, I might as well ask. My rig is an i7 920, 6GB ram, 570GTX and it still gets a performance hit from time to time. Is there one setting that's a performance hog?

Well shucks. My shadows never flickered with the change in the day/night cycle every few seconds, but they are now. There's no fix, right?

As I am playing the game from my couch with a gamepad, I don't really have the option of quicksaving. But I prefer to have a stable of saves to roll back to at any given time in a game like this anyway.

Ah yeah, I have been playing with a controller lately just for the ability to relax a little more (admittedly due to sessions lasting entirely too long), but I'm close enough to smack my keyboard for quicksave purposes. If I couldn't I'd probably have more saves as well.

Water mod is good with almost no change in FPS as far as I can tell (6950 here).

Sometimes looks a bit odd in places where the water shouldn't be flowing but due to the nature of the texture it is.

Game was crashing every 20 minutes today. Decided to try out that large address aware thing and everything is running fine now. Should have used that sooner, but whatever.

Really recommend trying LAA for others whose game randomly closes often.
Yea, that's why I'm repeating it every few pages. The OP sort of makes it seem like it's only needed for larger uGrids values, but it's one of the few tweaks that really can only help (I haven't read anything about it causing issues for anyone).

Water mod does look nice...

...but really only in still pictures.

I'm still struggling with mouse sensitivity. Setting fMouseHeading for X any Y works fine when my frame rate is around 45 fps, but once it goes above sixty Y sensitivity sky rockets. I tried using the FPS limiter, but it crashes to desktop at the Bethesda logo every time.

Any tips?

Use Dxtory. Limit it at 60, it works for me perfectly.

http://dxtory.com/v2-download-en.html

Go to the tab with the processor icon...

Check Limit Video FPS and set it to 60 or whatever value you want.
(I recommend keeping it at 60 because physics gets weird if you get over 60 frames indoors)

Putting "iFPSClamp=60" into the general section of skyrimprefs.ini will cap it without needing to use an external program.

Any way to disable the really annoying dimming/brightening HDR effect? It constantly shifts between blinded and shaded when looking around outdoors, incredibly distracting.

I wanted to know if anyone found a way to disable this? It's really annoying.

I tried setting this:

[BlurShaderHDR]
bDoHighDynamicRange=1

to 0, but the effect is still there.

After trying that water mod, I ended up deleting the whitewater effects from it. The high res water textures are great, but I feel like he overdid the foaming. Just using the water texture and Bethesda's base whitewater, I think it looks fantastic.

I can picture what you mean based on the screenshots Dennis posted but doesn't that make the game look better? I DL'd the mod about an hour ago on my PC but won't be able to test it for a few hours as I'm on the laptop at the moment but can you customize more details like the FXAA injector? I'm not using either but I seen that the FXAA mod has some nice customization options. And also, I DL'd the high res (2048 res) pack, do I need to adjust my water res in SkyrimPrefs too? I know I should just read the read me but I want to hear it from someone who actually has it working.

#####NOTICE#####

Is anyone willing to do a write up (doesn't have to super long) on the FXAA Injector so I can put that in the mods section. I'm not using, nor do I know if I will, but it seems like a lot have been using it. It would be helpful to see those who've messed with describe some individual settings if not all. PM me if you're interested.

Ok a little off topic so apologies if this is in the wrong place. I finally decided I wanted to play this on my TV (Bravia) . I've got everything working though HDMI on my GTX580, Video and sound. My desktop looks great on my tv. But when I load up the game my tv switches display modes automatically and the game looks very pixelated . Anyone know whats happening there?

UPDATE: worked on this all morning and finally figured it out about 10 minutes after posting this. If anyone else runs into a similar problem there's a setting in the nvidia control panel under "adjust desktop color and settings" called "Content type reported to the display" by default it's set to auto. switching it to "desktop programs" fixed it. ..

Oh sweet sweet big screen pc gaming!

Just incase people didn't know or notice.
Changing FOV can give you an FPS hit. Going between 60 and 90 FOV was hitting me for like 10-12 fps. It had a direct correlation for me (something which I haven't been getting much at all in skyrim, with settings).

So if your on a mid range system and want some extra fps. Sacrifice that FOV and bring it down a bit. I'm going to try and play at 75 if I can because it does give me an extra 5 or so fps over FOV at 90.

(no way I'm playing at 60 though, fuck that lol)

New water is nice, seems to move a little too rapidly though. Is that just due to the texture being higher-res?

Hey guys, an update for the new water should come out tonight to fix file size, foam glow, and hopefully the water speed. The speed of the water isn't a tweak that I messed with, it is just an unintentional side effect of having a completely new texture with new "waves." If anyone has any advice that would be great.

Doesn't work for me. Tried in both Skyrimprefs.ini and Skyrim.ini

Yeah, I thought it had been working for me, but it was just that area I tested it in that settled around 60. Went all over after I left.

I gave up on the FXAA injector in favor of that dx9 patch for better performance. It looks nice but it costs a lot.

Holy shit™ - its the mod creator!

Major props. The mod is huge step up from vanilla Skyrim water.

Nice to see we have one of the people making Betshedas games better right here on GAF.

:O I wish I knew about that earlier. If that works, then I can finally limit the game to 30 FPS without crashing all over the place.

Is there a specific texture mod for the landscape that people are using? That water looks nice, but it makes the difference even more jarring.
