The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Anyone else get flickering water sometimes? This is with and without the water mod. Around Riverwood I'll notice that the reflections kind of flicker when I move the camera around, mostly in 3rd person mode. It stops after a bit, but it gets distracting when moving around.

I used to have this problem in dungeons. Anyplace with water would freak outand flicker like crazy. Turning on iPresentInterval to 1 and turning on vsync fixed it for me.

Note about Dxtory, though. Well, two notes: One, leaving Dxtory's FPS display on the screen will cause random crashes on loading screens - turning it off fixes this. Two, if you use it in conjunction with the LAA patch/launcher, it'll increase load times dramatically - using it without LAA does not seem to cause these problems, at least for me.

I don't get these problems with bandicam, which does the exact same thing as dxtroy, but with a better UI imo.

You can also assign a hotkey to toggle the framerate limit.

I added a disclaimer but will consolidate your wording, thanks.

I've never heard of that. I'll take a look.

EDIT: "This program doesn't run on Japanese Windows. Please download some other version from another site!"
So weird.

EDIT2: It doesn't seem to actually affect Skyrim for whatever reason.

USING DXTORY. It feels AWESOME after that and this info should be in OP.

I have one problem with dxtory, i cant install it, lol. I've downloaded like 4 installers [of different versions too] from official website and every one of them says that "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program'.

It's a 32bit exe so I have no idea if that has any bearing. It shouldn't but I'm only bringing that up since I read it 5 minutes ago. You try running it as admin or OS compatibility mode?

Well, I got Bandicam sorted out. Unfortunately, not only does it still lead to long loading times if used with the LAA launcher, it also made my map look like this for some reason. The hotkey to disable the limit for loading screens is useful, but I'll stick to Dxtory since I have been fine without the LAA patch anyway.

BoobPhysics101 helped me get my CTD issues sorted. It turns out that using the same quicksave slot for 50+ hours caused save corruption.

I'd only made 6 non-quick saves for over the 80 hours of play time Steam says I have. Oops.

Anyway, making a new save then purging the rest of my save folder solved everything. Not on crash in the 8 hours I played last night.

Is it just me or is DxTory a mess, the buttons appear and disappear as i hover over them and it shows really weird graphics when i run games on top of it, feels really janky.

So a quick save is different to a normal save? I never used it anyway... I always go to the menu and overwrite my previous save.

Wow.. I just deleted all my old saves (moved them to a different folder) and the game is so much smoother!

It actaully feels like 60 fps now.

I had well over 100.

my tesv.exe has disappeared so when I try to launch the game nothing happens :S

if i try to fix it doing verify cache in steam, it says everything is fine. i never installed any mods, and i dont remember it having downloaded any patches for skyrim, at least not anything sizeable.

please tell me i don't have to redownload the whole thing?!

Around 30 hours in and the game is getting really fucked up performance wise...I'm getting higher framerate on high than I am on medium. It just seems to stutter more on high.

Try getting rid of your old saves if you have a lot.

I added some notes to the OP in the fixes and backed up about 90% of my saves. Gonna go in and see what it did.

Despite having vsync forced and fps capped at 60 I'm getting tearing - another known issue, or something that's fixable?

You using Inspector or RadeonPro? You could override the game and force it and force tripple buffering if you wish.

I just noticed that in Morthal I get a consistent 60fps which is weird. Normally in settlements and cities I get about 45-50 walking around but that place is fine for some reason. I fast traveled back to Riverwood which is smaller and I get the normal 45 running through the main road in town. No clue how to explain this one.

Nope, I keep a small number and overwrite them periodically

That's what I'm doing, like I mentioned, vsync is forced, and I have the fps capped at 60 - but I'm still seeing tearing.

You tweak the ini?

It's odd with or without uGrids.

I have some mods, but I have no idea what manager to use, or even where to get the NMM.

What could possibly be causing performance drops due to lots of saves? I can see how the PS3 issue might happen, with a single save that has loads of information in it... but why would other saves that haven't been loaded be affecting framerate?

Start by reading the mods section duh :P

Nexus mod manager is the way to go and all the mods I've linked thus far use it. On top of that, it just got a patch. It's still a WIP but works very well with the occasion crash. As I've said before, I'm gonna stick with it for another patch or 2 before deciding if it's the best one. I like that you can DL the specialized files off Nexus and the app auto DL's. Installing, uninstalling, and removing are super easy too. The video is I linked is not boring either as it explains things pretty simply. Give it a go.

How did the deleting saves go? Does it run faster now?

Slightly, less hitching in the selection of saves as it goes to 30fps and freezes for like 1 second a lot. That's gone now. I didn't have like 2000 saves though. I was at like 100.

Ah right, cool.

How did the NMM update work for you? I still get a loaddd of crashes.

Im thinking the same thing, it makes no sense, maybe is just placebo effect.

Why would the game be interacting with many older saves during gameplay?

That may be an isolated problem because I have been using dxtory to limit my fps for 25+ hours and haven't had any crashes in this game yet.

On another note, I am starting to see signs of something other people in this thread with high gametimes have already reported. Above the 50hr range with over 170 quests/misc objectives completed I am beginning to notice significant slowdown. I went back to a few points in Riften and Markarth to check framerates from locations I always did my testing while modding and these were the results:
(fps previous / current)
Riften: 22-24 / 13-14
Markarth: 16-18 / 10-12

NMM 0.12.10 beta still has crashes. Especially when trying to download a mod through the manager. If it has trouble connecting, it usually results in a crash.

I suppose it could be, but it crashes for me fairly reliably provided I have the FPS counter on the screen. As I mentioned, if I hide it, I get no crashes at all.

I personally have never hidden it, I just like to keep tracks of average fps levels for all of Skyrim.

A real shame.

Loving the game at a smooth 60fps (I think). Feels good man. Some of the vistas looks jaw dropping and looking at Whiterun from a distance makes it look like a real place.

Why did "mods" get lumped into this topic? Surely that's deserving of its own thread. It's hard to keep track of all the "performance" related posts and the "mod" related posts.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but let me get an up to date consensus...what do you guys make of the '4GB' mod? Does it do anything? Is your game faster? Does it load faster? Is it more stable? I know there's a section on the OP but it doesn't say much.

I don't think it is a big deal right now. When creation kit comes out a separate mods thread might be needed though.

It's the performance and modding thread?

I've been using it and it has been great. Much more stable. Without it I crash every few minutes.

Why does this thread ONLY have 5282 posts? It should be at LEAST in the tens of thousands by now! This is GOTY easily...C'mon gaf Im disapointed in ya. Lets get to 800 pages minimum! :(

I just realized I've been playing this whole time with water reflections turned off. No wonder my water looked like shit whether or not my mod was installed. Anyways update 1.4 to realistic water textures is out and is imo the best version. Link is in OP, update now!

Because this isn't the OT. It's a thread for performance tips and modding, and the creation kit isn't out yet. At this point, a high post count only means that people are having trouble getting the game to perform well, which isn't a good thing.

There are new drivers for AMD users. Enables crossfire.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=354664

So frustrated with AMD at the moment.
11.11a's crushed my computer, but admittedly the drivers before were making BF3 run well. What fucking sucks is that since 11.9, OpenGL programs have been crashing, and for unlucky people like me, that means Photoshop crashes all the time. Which just ain't worth it.

Wont be getting any extra performance on these new drivers until they fix my Photoshop being broken.
