The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Well my main reason for installing the LAA patch was I thought it might help with the issue I've been having since launch.

Basically, every few hours of gameplay, the game will CTD. And then I will be unable to launch it again until I have Steam validate the install, after which I get the message saying "4 game files failed to validate and will be redownloaded". The game then redownloads, plays fine for another few hours, and then repeats this.

I have re-validated and redownloaded the game from Steam seven times so far.

And I just now started my 8th since restoring to the non-LAA backup didn't fix this problem.

I am so fed up and I think I'm just going to play Arkham City til Bethesda gets that patch out.
Download a game, change exe to before LAA, apply LAA and use shortcut directly to TESV.exe, that way You'll bypass steam and validation problem.

They made regions with different level settings, and made the game behave more like morrowind. Modders will definatly fix the level problem.

On a side note, Ive decided after a few cosmetic mods, that Im done modding and just going to enjoy the game now till the end of the story. Hopefully by then tons of new, beautiful mods will be out, or better yet things like level fixes will be out which will make playing the game completely different :) Will defiantly warrant another play through then :D

Ah, that makes sense. I could see that system being a little more directed than the current system, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm planning to take the same approach to modding. Right now I'm running vanilla (except for the 4GB mod) and apart from a few annoyance fixes (like the companion leveling issue and maybe something to fix companions blocking tight spaces) I'm planning to keep it that way for the first playthrough.

Might be worth checking the validation log in your main Steam directory to see what files the game needs to keep redownloading.

Edit: Specifically, in the base Steam folder where steam.exe is located there should be a file called GameValidation.log

It's saying 0 have failed validation, but earlier it told me 4...strange. How often does this log update?

Thanks, I'll try this.

Heh, Dead Thrall summoning level cap removed. That should be fun to play with. Horribly overpowered of course, but it isn't like Dremora Lords aren't anyway. :P

Messed around a bit with this. With Dead Thrall it both removes the level cap and makes it work on non-humanoids. Only tried it with Giants and Mammoths so far, and both can be necro'd and used to certain effectiveness.

As you might expect, they can't follow you into cities or dungeons; those two in particular seem to function similarly to horses in that they'll still be waiting for you when you go back to the open world. Obviously this limits your summoning/necroing inside if you intend to keep them, but at least with Giants/Mammoths it's easy enough to find new ones. They also seem to fast travel with you just fine otherwise, tagging along with your horse.

I have to imagine the dungeon/city limitation is related to their huge size rather than the mod bypass. Certainly in dungeons they wouldn't get very far. :P A zombie of another high-level character who is more regularly sized (Master Vampire, Draugr Overlord etc) should potentially be able to follow you around normally. Though right now there's an unfortunate issue with Dead Thralls randomly disappearing on you anyway after a loading screen, with or without a mod.

Outside the Mammoths and Giants tend to lag behind when you sprint off but they'll catch up, and they hit as hard as you'd expect. In combat they seem to function just like any other melee zombie, becoming aggressive when they sense an enemy and going to town. The appropriate perks seem to work.

I Dead Thrall'd two Mammoths and we took out a couple Mammoth camps. Didn't feel bad about it. At one point it was the two Mammoth zombies and myself fighting against a few bandits who happened to be in the area, and two pairs of Mammoths and Giants at the camp we were attacking. Just a crazy free for all. I was hoping a dragon would show up but no such luck.

As far as stability, I haven't played with it extensively yet but in my stint it was solid enough. No crashes or anything too out of the norm. This sort of mod will be much better when the game is more appropriately balanced with other things in the future, but it should be fun to play around with as it is.

Anyone tried the glacier HD retexturing mod? Looks great.

Also, this mod looks really good as well:

the new texture mods are looking great

kind of off topic but i spoke about the game save problems and steam just sucking at the whole cloud thing.. i re downloaded my games on Origin and the saves instantly downloaded to my computer on start up, in that situation Origins is far better than STEAM

Just about every texture mod I've seen so far has only succeeded in adding more noise and wasting vram. Pretty terrible showing.

Maybe Dragon Age: Origins spoiled me on what to expect from a modern "HD Texture Mod", but shouldn't actually adding HD assets be requisite?

Hmm, starting to get constant CTD's. Guess I'm going to try disabling all my mods except glowing ore and fxaa injector and patching my .exe to be LAA. (I had updated to the DRMed .exe, but have copies of the old one.)

I'll throw you guys for a loop!

CPU looks like the main bottleneck there.

So far, I'm most impressed with Millenia textures.

Can't wait till it gets finished.

Millenia textures are the truth, the ones he/she did for New Vegas were fucking amazing.

Made a tattered scarf-like variant for Nightingale Armor:

I'm chomping at the bit to get the Creation Kit and some plugins that let you export correctly in 3ds max so I can do some real work. I want to make some custom weapons and finally figure out rigging so I can finish a set of armor.

Wow, never seen an i7 clocked that low. His GPU is more for CAD programs though and not games.

Yup. Got a workstation PC for engineering. I'm looking into getting a better gaming laptop. I'm a college student so I need portability. I know I'd save a lot of money getting a custom build. I want to play Skyrim pretty. I feel schizophrenic tonight.

Wait for GOTY. That way it will be patched up, have released DLC, and have actually completed mods.

Perhaps I'm grasping too much, but I've never tried the CK. How easy it to create new questlines, rewards, character npc's, etc.

I have an idea spinning based around the Argonian Maid, with the quest ending with running into a crazy Argonian woman who thinks she's the lusty maid. Her unique item being a broken off tip of a spear.... that weapon actually just being a dagger, being broken and all.

I chuckled and hoped that one day it would exist, but since I lack experience and know-how I doubt it would ever exist :c

It's pointless. The way it's running right now makes me believe I'm never going to see it on this computer. It's weird, I've been able to run almost everything at medium to high settings up until this. Arkham City, no problem. Saints Row 3, sure. And then this is just like a brick dropping through a sheet of glass. I don't get it.

skyrim = crowd sourced development -_-

So I just got an update from ATI that the 11.11 drivers are out. Anyone notice any fps increase?

i just installed the 11.11b drivers and yes there is a nice performance boost. Alpha performance seems greatly improved. i went from 31fps to 41fps when facing smoke. stuttering seems reduced definitely a recommend.

You are massively CPU limited. 1.6 Ghz i7 is simply not enough.

Forget it. Get a second hand Xbox360 if you want to play Skyrim.

So I'm trying to load my game and it won't load, just hangs on the load screen every time..

what gives, I saw on google search that it has to do with save file size?! But my save file is only 4mb...

So annoying, i want to play... GRRR FRUSTRATING SHIT.

I was getting that Pre LAA. If some textures failed to load then that last auto save was usually borked. Had to load the previous one or the one before that again. Could usually tell my the image in the preview pane as mine was all messed up.

Might be like a glitch in New Vegas, you can try loading an older save file and then loading the latest save from that one.

New NMM update is out.

Anyone tried it? No way am I switching over from ModOrganizer. For now anyway. MO is much tidier.

So far, yeah. Then again, the original textures are bad enough that adding some noise and a sharpening filter are often improvements, sad as it is.

That HD texture mod for some rocks and the stone in Whiterun is the best one so far, and even that one is a mixed bag.

With NMM you mean Nexus Mod Manager right? I have that and it works great and you're telling me there's a better Mod Manager? Mind = blown.

So, guys what's the best settings to get the best looking shadows?

Also, what level should I set ugrids to? nvidia suggest 7, is that good enough or can I set it to something higher and still be stable?

Mod Organizer is a brilliant way to sort out mods. Every mod has its own folder outside the Data folder. Makes it extremely easy to delete and install mods. However it doesn't tell you when an update is out.

Sounds good Boobphysics. Not sure if I should make the change though. It's a pretty big hassle

Kermit, follow the GeForce guide in the OP and set shadowmapres to 8092. I forgot to do that and it made a huge difference. I think so anyway.

Beyond 7 I started to suffer from crashes and some slowdown as my poor old mechanical HDD struggled to keep up.

Edit: Frame rate was fine though (on my 3-Way GTX 580 SLI system, snarf snarf).

Edit 2: Downloaded some more of isoku's work - good stuff dude!

Crashing is getting on my nerves...probably caused by me setting ugrids to 7, but I'm an idiot and deleted all my saves before I changed the ugrids. So I'm stuck like this. Planning to start a new character when the patch hits anyway..

Use the 4GB mod. It's perfect.

Have to second this. Switched from modifying the old exe to using Skyrim4GB; had a minor issue with version 1.0 where I had to put it in the Skyrim Steam folder for it to work, but the latest version (1.3) is working perfectly.

I bring tidings of great cheer :)
