The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Yeah, I've got a bundle of .rars in a separate Skyrim mods folder but damn if I know if I've even installed them all and where the files are inside the data folder. >_>

Well in the case of uninstalling, the readme will typically tell you exactly which files were added; if not you can just look into the rar again and see the file structure.

But yeah an organizer obviously helps. Though people have said they're still sort of buggy, which is why I've been waiting.

K, I just got a new computer(2600 and 6770) + Skyrim and I have a couple questions:

1. Is playing with a ps3 controller feasible?

2. I have weird mirco-stuttering when turning around and sometimes when moving, otherwise the framerate is fine. Are my graphics card and my 2600's gpu in SLI mode or something or is this just a bug?

Steam just patched the game. Does this mean I need to re-apply the LAA patch to the new .exe? Will the DRM-free exe in the OP still work?

I don't think it's impossible. Just make sure you have the right software to get your key mappings right. [I use this software http://www.motioninjoy.com/download ]
I'm using a PC 360 controller for Skyrim and it's perfect.

On another note getting my brand new GTX570 Superclocked card today with a 24" LED/LCD Asus monitor with 2ms response. Can't wait to tweak and geek. :)

By the way how much ram?

You guys should try that. Only downside is that it doesn't tell you when updates are out. Zero crashes though and great sorting. No files even touch the Skyrim install folder.
Maybe MO should be put in the OP?

1. The MO folder doesn't have to go into the Skyrim directory but I found that this makes it easier
2. Create a profile. Name it anything
3. Go to settings > load > Proxy DLL
4. Either click Install Mod and select the necessary mod zip OR copy the mod folder directly into the 'mod' folder in the ModOrganizer directory
5. Make sure the hierarchy is correct. You can read the mod instructions for further info
6. Tick the mods in MO to activate them

To make sure it's working, I recommend you try installing a very obvious mod. You don't need to launch the game through MO every time.

How exactly are you supposed to use the 4GB mod? I've just extracted the folder to desktop and have been launching the game through the exe in that folder. Is that right? I haven't had a CTD so far.

Yup. Just launch the 4GB mod from anywhere. As long as the other dll is with it.

That's great news honestly, now I just have to take the time to search through my data folder and just delete everything and reinstall using MO.

Seems like its worth it, no?
Yup, definitely worth it.

Deleting things is easy. Just keep the Interface, Strings and Video folders. As well as the .bsa files. Everything else can go. Only issue is remembering what mods you had installed.

@ Enco

Killable children, you monster?

Hey wait... this means I can permanently shut up those little shits that make stealing at night a pain? Awesome!
:lol I've never actually used it. My mod list is bigger now than in the screenshot too :p

Another awesome mod is the Val Crafting mod. Making arrows and lockpicks is awesome. You can make far more than that with the mod too.

edit: Haha perfect picture Bungie. I just counted. 28 mods.

wow glad one of the things the patch was going to fix was buttons on the UI but it just broke it instead. I changed RB to X... so now X(store) does work... :/ I can't store anything in my house. WTF BETHESDA.

patch broke my Y-sensitivity

edit: fixed it by changing this:

Code:
[Controls]
bMouseAcceleration=0
fMouseHeadingYScale=0.0200
fMouseHeadingXScale=0.0200

to this:

Code:
[Controls]
bMouseAcceleration=0
fMouseHeadingYScale=1.0000
fMouseHeadingXScale=0.0200

in Skyrim.ini

I can't see the main menu :(

How do you check to see if you have the new patch?

I forgot I closed Steam so I might not have it. Not sure if it snuck in when I opened it though.

Make sure the hierarchy is correct and maybe run it for the first time through MO.

Yea, MO is a lot more flexible. I find it easiest to create a folder for a new mod and manually copy over the files. This ensures that everything is in order. The mods all have their own folder in the 'mods' folder inside the MO directory.

You mean just run it to start the game? Or just 1 time through the MO to get its "hooks" in?

1 time through MO :)

If you want an obvious mod to test it out, try this.

edit: lol at the patch. It started download for me after steam crashed but I've paused it. I don't want to waste my remaining 100mb bandwidth.

edit 2: can't play the game without the patch. Fuck. :lol at the steam forums. People aren't happy!

Is there any way to undo what has already been downloaded and play the game?

Only if you know which key data files the game patches over. Or you could gamble and just delete stuff you think would be associated with an update and then do a cache run. Or DL the whole game again before they put the patch back up lol

Haha I guess there's no skyrim for me today.

I hate bandwidth caps.

Bahahahahahahaha!!!!

I load the game after the patch and it loads to the title screen without any options. It just sits there and I can't select anything.

Outstanding work.

Hot damn, that is pathetic. I mean, we keep hitting some new lows in one way or another. I'm so glad I turned off updating after the last false update.

Heh, Steam started the patch download even though I had it set to no auto-download for Skyrim. Fortunately I had a backup .exe. After I replaced it and went back into Steam, it seems to be fine, not downloading anything. Strange stuff.

The Mod Organizer is great. Not buggy at all.

Cool, I'll check it out.

:lol

zeph, you reminded me that I have Skyrim backed up! I have every steam game backed up to an external hdd in case of a complete screw up or a reformat. Just gotta find out what files the game messed up.

What .exe version do I need? My backup says 1.1.21.

I think the new one is 1.2.21.

I did the same How do you make it stick... I restarted my computer, and when I started steam it just started downloading the patch.. :? WTF steam why is their an option that doesn't work. I guess I have the patch. 1.212 something. I played for an hour with no problem really. :/ still they did fuck up the controller. you can't store or favorite anything. I have to unplug the controller and use the keyboard. Glad I used the weight command, but I'm about to just up it like 10000 weight and forget about it.... :/ Fix yo shit BETH.

I like the Mod Organiser but I've had 3 CTD's since I've got it going about 15 minutes ago. I haven't had one in at least 15 hours of game. Have to see if it's random or what.

Crap, you're right. I just checked and auto updates for Skyrim were on. I turned them off. Luckily I showed up after the patch was taken down. I don't know what to do once the DL starts outside of pausing the update but even then. Hmmm.

That's odd. It hasn't caused any issues for me. Are you using the 4GB mod with it?

Dunno if you can do anything after it starts updating. If you go into offline mode it'll say the game isn't ready to be played in offline mode. I had to let it finish then replace the .exe with the original. Seems okay now.

I had auto-download off for Skyrim the entire time, though. Not sure why it started downloading, and as soon as Steam booted up as well.

Makes you think that somethings afoot. You keep turning off auto DL's and they magically come back on.
