The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Question :

Can you still use tesv.exe to play the game without launching steam?

Crap, mine says 1.2.12. Son of bitches. I never even seen it DL and I've only been on for an hour.

That may explain the 3 CTD's I just got for nothing. Please tell me I can at least go back to my older exe? Or the 4GB Skyrim thing!

I'm using the original LAA exe. Not patched from vanilla technically.
Check out the 4GB mod.

Makes you think that somethings afoot. You keep turning off auto DL's and they magically come back on.
It seriously sucks.

Nope. Will always launch through Steam.

edit: Steam decided to install a TF2 update. Thanks a lot. I seem to get a stupid TF2 update every few days!

edit 2:

Hahaha :P

Shit, my PC is on at home. I turned off auto updates but now I'm worried. I was also using the original .exe with the LAA update. I guess I'll find out when I get home from work.

I had steam set up to patch Skyrim manually and like 10 minutes ago, when i was playing Path of Exile, i saw info 'Steam finished updating Skyrim' ... ;\

I've just checked, something changed my setting in steam and autopatcher was on, wtf!

Is anybody water broken? Only had realistic water installed and now the water looks broken.

EDIT: Nvm, new patch changed some of my values in the skyrimprefs.ini.

It looks normal but I don't know. I can't see the glowing ores yet and I tried loading like 10 saves to check random areas.

As I posted on the forums, I also got 2 instances in the loading screen that made the weapon or character disappear briefly. And then there's the 3 CTD's which I have not had in tens of hours.

It auto-updated for me even though I told Steam not to AND had the exe on read-only. It seems when an update is pushed it turns it on, deletes your previous exe, re-checks and downloads it.

WTF Steam?

Steam might plug it back in.
:lol

Try out MO. It lets you edit the ini files without touching the main skyrim ones. This should in theory prevent any updates from ruining your settings. At least as far as I'm aware.

That Steam guy keeps stealing my newspapers too.

So 4GB Skyrim works with the new update? And I can still launch through Steam? Or anyone try restoring their older exe and redoing LAA again?

I'm DL'ing 4GB Skyrim now.

Jesus the negative Crossfire scaling with the newest ATi drivers is sooooooo bad with 5xxx cards. Playing at mostly ultra settings with a few INI tweaks and 4x AA and I get pretty good frame rate. With Crossfire enabled at the same settings I get THREE fps. What the hell is taking AMD so long?

So wait, whats wrong with the patch? Im in class and just now found out about it.
o

I just killed a flame atronach with a fireball, resistances are completely gone. Kind of a good change though, makes dragons more interesting. :)

Sadly, with the 4GB mod, you can't launch it directly from Steam. It still launches through it but you have to use a separate exe. I made a link in my taskbar.

Main problem is the fact that the game is updating even when people have turned the auto updates off. People are also reporting messed up water/menus. Just general bugs. Beth has also supposedly pulled the update. Some of the issues may be due to mods but no one really knows what's going on right now.

Think I'll leave Steam in Offline mode until they stop mucking about, don't use Steam for anything besides that these days anyway.

What's funny is that the UI/control-related PC bugs in Skyrim aren't fixed, even though it's specifically specified in the patch notes that it's solved.

I never had any confidence in Bethesda, as most of their games were just broken and especially after Oblivion on PC I lost all faith in them. They release Skyrim, it blows me away and I see a tiny shred of respect slowly return -- Then they go and release shoddy patches with crappy fixes, respect gone again.

Haha, I'm guessing the backwards flying dragons has to do with Bethesda trying to fix the issue with them just flying off and not engaging.

Gltich Patch notes of fixes

-more CTD's
-backwards dragons
-breaking mods
-re-breaking LAA (which is restorable, it's in the OP)
-menu freezes and disappear altogether

Notes for next patch

-add PS3 control buttons
-fix press enter to start to press R3 on Sony Playstation Dual Shock 3 Killzone Edition controller - to start
-increase slowdown
-increase CTD's and crashes and sue the LAA guys for fixing the game
-charge DLC money for LAA fix
-fans grow balder pulling their hair out from frustration

:lol

Dev 1: Right guys, we gotta fix the issue where dragons fly off and don't engage
Dev 2: I got it! Lets make them fly backwards!
Dev 1: Thats.. brilliant! Release the patch!

For those that are playing post patch 1.2. Are you having any issues using a wired 360 controller?

Yes lol

I highly recommend restoring your 1.1.12 exe and re-enabling LAA.

What Xbox 360 controller issues are you having?

Seems that the patch is casing a lot of issues. The official Bethseda PC forum is on fire.

Some buttons not reacting. And as I said before, 3 CTD's in 15 minutes with 1.2.12. I went back to 1.1.21 and patched in LAA again and no CTD's and performance back up. PATHETIC.

I don't think it's impossible. Just make sure you have the right software to get your key mappings right. [I use this software http://www.motioninjoy.com/download ]
I'm using a PC 360 controller for Skyrim and it's perfect.

On another note getting my brand new GTX570 Superclocked card today with a 24" LED/LCD Asus monitor with 2ms response. Can't wait to tweak and geek. :)

By the way how much ram?
Awesome.. I love tweaking.

I have 16 gigs of ram... I think DDR3-1333
