The family cat must be going senile

Time ta STEP IT UP
Either she's going senile, or she's becoming a spoiled slob..

We got her 5 years ago when she was a kitten, and haven't had any troubles with her. But lately in the past month or more, she's just stopped cleaning herself. She has about four two-inch spots of matted hair on her back, because of her lack of oral hygeine. And her ass... well she doesn't clean that either.

Now I don't know why she's doing this, but I think it has to do with senility. Our last cat who died suffered with senility, and she had similar hygeine problems. Of course, she also stopped eating, and forgot what she was doing half the time.

O well, this cat is getting disgusting. I'd clean her in the tub, but she'd scratch me to death. And of course, I'm not about to declaw and cat, it sounds pretty terrible.

Sounds like your cat just can't keep it together. She needs your support. Show her a good time. Let her know she's special.

Take the cat to the vet. Seriously. There's something wrong. Any behavioral change that results in it not cleaning itself means there's something wrong.

Even the 14 year old cat I used to have didnt' stop grooming itself. It'd go into dark rooms and meow lowdly for 20 minutes though...

Our cat has some dementia or something, but anyway, my stepmom refuses to put it down, so it's locked up in the washroom 24/7 and can never come out since it vomits and pees all over the place.

Are you fucking serious? Why would your mom do that? Is she selfish enough that she can't bare to put it to sleep, or does she think its unfair to the cat?

Do it a favour. Go behind her back and put it to sleep. Many people don't believe in human euthanasia because our existence goes beyond just suffering. But animals such as cats just feel pain. That's all.

Well, the cat is almost as old as I am. I believe it's 19-years-old in fact and it's the only thing remaining from her life before she married my father. She's trying to hold on to him for as long as she possibly can, I guess. She's my stepmom, so we don't have the kind of relationship I would have with my real mom and despite my feelings (and my father's), she just keeps it alive in the basement with medicine and food.

It's pretty sad, since you can hear it screaming/meowing for attention since it's locked up all day and it'll literally jump on your leg and try to claw (it has no front claws) when you're done with washing/drying and have to leave.

It also has some kind of liver/kidney problems. I'm not sure what it is specfiically, but he has that medical illness along with the dementia.

Oh fuck that's so terrible.

We put down my cat earlier this year. We had her for as long as I could remember. One day we noticed that she wasn't eating very much. We took her to the vet and she was diagnosed with liver disease. We put her on some special food. She was pretty content always, even though it was clear that she wasn't in the best health. A few weeks later the disease went to her head (dimentia, like yours). Her eyes were glazed and she had trouble keeping her head up. We immediately set an appointment with the vetand put her down the next day. It was incredibly difficult, but we knew it had to be done. The cat was miserable.

Man, seriously... just the thought of your cat is killing me. I'd hate to be in your shoes. Tacticly talk her into putting it down or something.

Yeah. It sucks. The cat also drools now when you pet it, so a lot of visitors tend to ignore it altogether. My sister things it's nasty. I think I'm the only one who spends any time with him at all.

What do you expect if you play the Spiderman DVD 24-7.

I remember my cat's last day, and the fact that I had the chance to put her down the day before. She was screaming all night and couldn't move anymore.
Never letting that happen again, if I get another cat, and it starts to hit that point of no return, i'm going to have it put down.
