The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

Notes from the sets I played against you guys. Admittedly there was a lot of rollback, which is why I'll probably not continue playing in US lobbies.

Cindi:

  • Poke Mika out of her charged st.HK or neutral jump to make it whiff. Do not block it.
  • If you do end up blocking it, don't press buttons afterwards as it's +3 on block. Your options are to either hold up to escape the throw or block to wait for another normal.
  • Be careful with projectiles as Mika's charged st.HK can jump over them.
  • Punish EX peach with something else than a throw.
  • You're pushing quite a bit of buttons on wakeup. Laura's wakeup isn't too good but st.MP is probably not the best option to do while you're being pressured on wakeup. You can try doing her EX bolt charge every now and then since it has a hit of armor against poorly timed meaties.
  • Also, if you're not sure whether the bolt charge is going to hit, you should do the light version. Otherwise you're getting punished every time.
  • You didn't do too many jumps, which might be wise but you never actually contested my ability to antiair either. As you can see against Nakazato, he got quite a few jumps free on me.

Nakazato:

  • You're jumping way more than you should be jumping. Maybe do around half of what you're doing now
  • Do the second part of the Passion Press late so if the opponent blocks the first hit, the second hit won't come out.
  • But do make sure the opponent is in range for the f+MP to begin with. Just throwing it around is not too wise.
  • If you want the wall splat after the whip on open ground, backdash after the whip (you can then follow it right up with a charged st.hk into ex peach)
  • Using EX Peach as a poke is kind of risky as it is massively punishable on block. As a reversal you can do it sometimes but it will get stuffed.


Another point I noticed: neither of you did a lot of quick getups, which gave me ample time to think about my next setup.

Thank for this thread. I'm getting back into fighting games after skipping them for a decade or so. I'm horrible in SFV, but I feel like i'm making a little progress. Hopefully I can pick up some good things from this thread.
