Looks like this sales update was again 'hidden' in another Square Enix press release - https://press.na.square-enix.com/TU...DATE-REVEALED-FOR-FINAL-FANTASY-XIV-ONLINE-PA

This was first spotted by Genki on Twitter/X. The last sales update was 200 million units back in March 2025.

So, is that good or not? Is it high or low? Does it matter when the last 2 games were puppy barf?
200m is an impressive number, but google says "When you include spin-offs, remakes, remasters, mobile games, online titles, and crossovers, the total number of Final Fantasy games is significantly larger, with one tally reaching over 90 individual games".

I love Final Fantasy. One of my favorite franchises. Looking forward to Tactics in the fall, hoping it will sell well. And then it would be nice with a remaster of FF13 trilogy. Bring Lightning back!

Mobile games are f2p so they are not sales (and number would be significantly higher if f2p downloads would be counted in)
I'm pretty sure I have Chrono Trigger somewhere on my phone and that I paid for it.

And I'm fairly certain I've seen loads of paid FF games on there as well.

Millennials are going to be playing this shit and Pokemon in the old people's home. By then the games will basically play themselves and will about antique collection and how little generation Delta respect their elders who spent the prime years of their lives fighting for their right to be annoying shitlords in the great culture wars on twitter.

Average age of Final Fantasy (and Dragon Quest) players is 42 according to the chart posted here recently. Highest of any of the franchises on the chart.

I swear there will be FF fans on their deathbeds 30 years from now, and their last words will be "Final Fantasy was better when it had strategic turnbase combat, none of this fancy action combat for zoomers. I've been saying it for years, all Square Enix has to do is make a mainline Final Fantasy with traditional turn based battles but modern graphics, it will sell many millions of copies and save the franchise. I'm sick of the western mainstream media bias against JRPGs and traditional turn based gaming. You can't spell ignorant without IGN, they hate anything that isn't Calladoody or GTA. They should make a true FF7 remake that's exactly like the original just with better graphics. Why won't Square listen to me…" [dies]

So true. FF fanbase are their own worst enemy.

I was thinking about this last night. Pretty much every FF game has had a new unique system. Some worked better than others, but they've all been different. That hasn't changed, but somehow now everyone a franchise that has a history of trying new things to stick to the same thing. Even within the same number - FFX and FFX-2 have different battle systems. The 3 FF13 games are all different.
