Metaphor: ReFantazio has officially sold 2 million units worldwide

Resonated with me on every level, my GOTY last year and entered my Mt. Rushmore of JRPGs. If/when they do an enhanced re-release with additional content and bring it to Switch 2 I'll be playing it again!

I downloaded it thanks to Gamepass, but deleted it without playing. It was odd. I had already tried the demo and decided I just can't spend hours on it. After Expedition 33, I'm not even sure if I'll give these "old" style jrpgs another chance.
Expedition 33 isn't even a JRPG, and the combat becomes trivial pretty early on - it doesn't require any real thinking.

Just out of curiosity, what is your Mount Rushmore of JRPGs? Not trying to stir shit up, I'm genuinely interested.

Haha no worries, I'd say it's probably now:

Metaphor: Refantazio, Final Fantasy X, Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5

Nothing too dramatic or obscure I guess, but those are what I consider the peaks of the genre for me.

I also love this game soooo much, it one of my favourite game from Atlus.

Too pricey for me to give it a chance at full price. And with Atlus' tendency to rerelease their games with more content I'm not really enticed to buy it on sale either.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for the upgrade version like Persona 5 Royal, SMT V Vengeance, Persona 4 Golden, SMT: Deep Strange Journey, and other Atlus games.

I doubt this game has a production cost of $80M, so 2M/60 = $120M-$80M = $40M in profit
I know Sega, they would never spend money if they need to sell 1M units to recoup their investment.
This game must have cost Sega $50M at most.

Is this game good? Pretty sure I saw it on gamepass, but I just skipped over it

Too many good games on gamepass it's getting absurd

Still need to beat 33 while it's still on Gamepass

Opinions vary greatly obviously. I loved it. You'll have to play it for yourself

"Thought it would sell more"

It's a new IP that sold 2 million units you goons lol
And is:
-From Atlus who holds major weight in the jrpg category
-Came out on PC Xbox and PS5
-The world has more gamers than ever
-Had a good marketing campaign
-Reviewed well

2 million is shit all things considered.

Clair 33 is from 30 nobodies and dumped all over this game.

New IP, team of 30ish devs with a cool underdog story, amazing combat and story. The Expedition 33 devs earned it by amazing word of mouth. It's GOTY for me

But 2 mil is no slouch for a brand new ip regardless of the team behind it lets not act silly...

Very similar. It's a time management game outside of the dungeons, just like Persona.
I enjoy it in theory - side stuff like that is typically something I really appreciate in games as it helps you break up combat

I just didn't enjoy how it was implemented in persona 3 (only persona game I've played)

I felt like I had to just support everyone no matter how stupid they were being in order to rank up their social link, even when guys were acting like total cucks. maybe this is how high school kids in Japan talk. I don't know.

at least saying that shit to the women makes sense because you're trying to get in their pants

I do think it would also be probably improved if it wasn't so black and white where there is only one correct answer. often I'd want to tell a guy he's an idiot but decided not to because I don't want to fuck up ranking up my social link. I felt forced to pick the response I didn't want to.

I liked the concept though and think it could work if tweaked

I just started it and Expedition 33 as well. The second hooked me from the first hours.

When does this one picks up?

You forgot 30%+ cut for retail and digital stores. The game also has been on sale, I got it for $40 on PS5 quite a while back and it's $35 on Steam right now (as an example).

I startet playing MR after finishing E33 and well...it doesnt compare well. If you like the whole Persona-shtick then its a fine game i presume.

I like it but i dont deeply enjoy it like E33. The gooning over the MC is so outdated, Story is okay so far (im at the opera house), the combat is meh and the gameplay as a whole just not my cup of tea.

I get why a lot of people really like Persona but im glad that i played MR so I can avoid the rest of the Personaseries. I will finish MR but its a bit of a struggle tbh after the masterpiece thats E33.

It's similar to Persona in terms of how time is managed, and you have an equivalent of the social stats, but the social links are more straightforward. They level up each time you spend time with someone regardless of how you respond to the prompts - all choosing the 'right' answer does is award you with one of the games resources (Mag).

In general, I love Persona and Atlus JRPGs but I played this for about 20-30 hours, put it down, and never came back to it, nor do I have a desire to.

I didn't care for the art style, which I thought was a step down from other Atlus games, especially compared to P3R. I also didn't care for the characters. The MC in particular just reminded me of limp-wristed, pre-pubescent putz. Not someone I wanted to spend 60+ hours playing as.

The biggest issue for me was that the Persona-style calendar and relationship mechanics felt shoehorned into the game. I really think this game would have benefited greatly from just being a straight narrative JRPG instead of a Persona-like.

That said, I really liked the job system, and I hope it gets implemented into other games in the future, just not a sequel to this one.

What people expected from turn-based JRPG :messenger_grinning:
The real answer is that it not that well though mediocre game. Anime fantasy (lol) with bad/childish characters and story and non-existent default difficulty.
Typical SE approach - try to expand reach of the game (westerners/casual) only to make game bad

As a fan of Persona games. Metaphor bored me to death to the point i droped it without finishing it. Thers some good things they can take to the persona series, like the dungeon exploration and combat, but that story and characters was one of the most boring shit i played from Atlus.

Kinda agree. The best characters, were the ones that wasn't playable. Though, I still enjoyed the game experience.

Can you explain the last 30 hour why it's so much worse I didn't play the game
It loses focus.
Dungeons drag on and on.
It becomes a grindfest to master archetypes. I love the system but I ended up hating that everyone has access to everything.
The story also left me a bit unsatisfied during the end game, though the villain is awesome.

Still it is a fantastic game, do not miss it.

P4 Golden>P5 Royal>Metaphor

If the inevitable revision is good it could dethrone Persona for me.

Warms my heart to see so many people embracing the reality that this game is a bit on the mediocre side and extremely similar to Persona.

So it's sold 1 million in a day and then limped to 2 million over the next 9 months despite being on every platform known to man?

It's not bad, but not great, considering all the free PR and bumming it was getting from all the corporate shills in the media last year.

They've been industry darlings, but you start to wonder when the zombies that don't just lap up everything Atlus release start to turn on them for producing the same tired, generic, formulaic titles for the past two decades.

I really want to play this game but I figured it would come out on the Switch successor, so I didn't get it at launch. Hope it shows up in the next Nintendo Direct!

The bad:

  • no sort function in the inventory
  • side quests in which you increase your bond level with your followers should've ALL been voice acted. Not just the first and last bond level quest
  • although 10/10 music, how does a game this big only have 25 different "real" songs? The metric fuck ton of repeated songs throughout the playthrough becomes nauseating
  • low-budgety, canned animations and very few "real" cutscenes
  • This specific cutscene hyped me up to no end. It's just some old childhood thingy that really popped off when I saw this:
    mR4Whsq.png
  • BUT that cutscene led me to believe that we were getting some juppongatana action:
    clg5Bkg.png
  • but alas... well, they're cool for different reasons ofc - but certainly NOT the juppongatana I was expecting).
  • from a technical stand point, one of the worst looking games I've played in the last decade
  • lack of UI options or even a toggle to hide all of it when casually running around dungeons and towns
  • too. much. JRPG. bloat. After half of the game (island), the game becomes too bloated with dialogue which aren't interesting enough. It also doesn't help that these bloated conversations keep using canned animations and non VA lines
  • end-game is really bad. Game is extremely easy up until the last hour(s) where the game decides to exponentially increase the levels (and thus the difficulty) of every side quest and monster
  • variety of builds are massive, but the lack of difficulty isn't encouraging me to try 90% of the combination
  • I played on hard throughout the entire game and never, during its early-to-mid stages did it ever feel like this was "hard". SMTV absolutely demolished me on hard and it did it CONSISTENTLY throughout the game. Metaphor expects me to care enough about the combat when it enters its last 5 hours while SMTV -forces- me to understand the combat from start to finish

The good
+ front/back positioning in battle without any cost should be JRPG staple
+ the music, all 25 "real" songs in the game, are absolute god tier
+ the main cast is incredible, I don't remember last time I was this invested in a JRPG cast like this
+ Louis is one of this generations most compelling villain figures. Honestly reminded me of the genius that was Luca Blight and his arc and story telling
+ the whole scenario and main quest that revolves around "becoming the king" is genius and blew me away. Same with the idea of humans being the absolute fiends of this universe
+ the world feels SO vast while simultaneously not overwhelming the player. It feels huge because it takes days (literally) to travel from one place to another. This makes this game feel like an adventure, very similar to how FFX feels (and what i.e. FFXVI truly lacks)

Oh, and press turn is my favorite JRPG battle system ever

What a GREAT fucking game this was - but holy shit is it riddled with issues. Despite this, the main story was fantastic and press turn combat remains my favorite JRPG battle system of all time.

Just started the 5 hour PS+ trial . . . not sure what to think yet after the first hour or so. I thought it was a turn based game like persona. So I'm completely ignorant on it atm.

I bought this game today. Haven't started it yet. Opening 10 hours of these big JRPGs are always a slog for me to get through. Got to learn all the mechanics, battle system, story needs to be introduced. I know it's all needed I just don't enjoy it.

2 million in 8 months.

totally underhelming after all the uproar over the game with some people use it to shit on Square Enix
