The Final Shot From The Matrix

I recently rewatched The Matrix in my local cinema. Due to the pandemic, my local cinema is showing older films as there is a lack of new films.

Don't get my wrong I do love the first Matrix film. I saw it when it originally came out in 1999, and still, after all these years I have the same issue with the film: I hate that Neo flies at the end. I hated that closing shot back in 1999 and I still hate it now.

I remember coming out of the cinema back in 1999 and all my friends saying that the final shot was so cool and I felt that it was silly and would create issues if there was a sequel. I said at the time that it was the perfect get out of jail free card for the writers.

So what are your thoughts on the final shot from The Matrix?

what issues did it create in the sequel?

the flying scenes were fucking amazing in Reloaded.

It's kinda stupid, especially since they went on to make a full trilogy, but it was meant to show that Neo could fully control variables within the matrix.

Cheesy and fan-fictiony, sure, but it's only a hint of his power level at the end of the film.

I like it as a statement on the total mastery if the matrix Neo has by the end, and it would have been perfect as an ending were it not for the sequels having to raise the stakes beyond the initial movies hook of 'our real world is a lie'.

Once it it had no grounding in reality, started having all AI and resistance characters, and went outside the matrix with spaceships and mech suits, the sequels had no where to go but to ever more ridiculously out do itself, so the flying was no longer the statement of supreme power it was originally, and instead was just another silly bit of fantasy bollocks.

It’s a bit dumb. We went from control over the Matrix, mental and spiritual transcendence, along with ‘you won’t have to dodge’, to Neo flying around like Superman.

That kind of comic book theatricality didn’t really mesh with the serious, philosophical direction in the rest of the film, as exaggerated as it is.

The only problem with flying is that there's not enough of it. This is fucking awesome:

I think it's used well in the sequels. It's pretty obvious why it's incredibly awesome in Revolutions.
Reloaded is complicated. The whole point of Neo flying away during the Burly Brawl is that he finally faced a real challenge he couldn't cheat code his way through. When he saves Trinity he blows the fuck out of the city as a reinforcement of what the Architect said - he already chose her instead of humanity.
Accidentally teleporting to the mountains takes his skill set out of the game for the freeway chase and brings it back for a fucking awesome payoff; this links nicely with the Trinity save, because we just saw him going incredibly fast but only arriving at the last possible moment - and then he's forced to go even faster.

More a "get out of jail free" card than stopping bullets?

If he can wave his hand and generate an acceleration force on bullets, it stands that he can also do that to the air around him or his clothes, or his body itself to generate lift force.

He already gained the get out of jail free card when he resurrected.

I didn't really think much of it. You literally see him jump into an agent and super saiyan himself out of them just before that. Besides, Neo was always suppose to be analogous to god.

The sequels story doesn’t actually make sense in the context of
The first film.

why is agent smith trying to get access codes to Zions mainframe when the machines always destroy Zion anyway. This is just one major flawthe story.

I think not everyone is privy to that information. Also as part of the design, the chosen one has to raise. They needed to create the scenarios where the chosen one would need to develop the abilities so the cycle can continue. Without all the conflict from the first movie Neo wouldn't have discovered he is the one and of course agent Smith would have continued to be not more than a drone.

I mean, not that I think that is good or anything but at least to me it does click with the rest of the lore.

There's something I don't like about it either and I'm not sure what it is.

I definitely do not like the music choice either. Awful.

he flies in the next movie, so it's a teaser for the next movie.

besides, the movie has like 2-3 different "he's the one" parts. when he freezes the robots. also when he freezes the bullets.

i don't see an issue with this, dude was Cyber Jesus Superman long before the last shot of the movie.

I think it was supposed to be either a sign for a sequel or the classic "the end".

I won't complain. Matrix was a good movie and I feel like those flying scenes where supposed to reinforce what Profet said about Matrix itself.

What time is it?
I thought the superman scene was dumb back then and still do, but on the plus side it was a forewarning for how shit the series would become.

Reloaded was a damn good movie, fight me.

I’d rather agree with you.

But yeah, I loved the end of the first Matrix movie. I thought it was cool and set things up for the sequels. If Neo didn’t fly, I think things would have been a bit less interesting in the grand scheme of things in the follow ups.

Matrix should have been a one off, and the ending fits.He mastered the matrix and can fly now.Matrix sequels suffered from the star wars problem, they answered questions no one was asking, and made the audience suspend their beliefs too much.

Didn't like it then, really don't like it now, Reloaded is cool but missing so much of the magic from the original.

Superman Neo was one of the most terrible things in that most terrible film that is Matrix Reloaded, but it was a good closure to the first movie.

I loved the ending, though I was wondering how in the sequels there would be any tension outside of the Matrix since he's virtually impossible to kill there. The trilogy was good, but 1 was by far the best.

The problem with The Matrix trilogy is they made three movies but they had materials for just two, the first and a better balanced mix between the second and the third movie. Matrix Revolution is very bland and Trinity role is almost useless. There are multiple scenes they could cut off and make just one movie Reloaded+Revolution.
-the Kid is useless, he's just an uninteresting character from Animatrix. He only have one important scene, but they could choose to replace him with another character, it was the same..
-the second scene with the Merovingio in Matrix Revolution: nothing important added, who cares.
-the family (of programs), really?
-almost all the scenes with Trinity: ok, we already know you love Neo, but STOP saying every fucking scene!
-reduce the length of the final battle on Zion by half on Revolution
-cut and cut and cut from every scene from Revolution, for example the Nabucodonosor's run has to be this long?
-completely cut the dance scene at the beginning of Reloaded.

I'm pretty sure there are fan edits out there that satisfy most, if not all of these things.

So it’s ok that he is brought back to life and can stop bullets by raising his hand, but flying is where you draw the line?

Also, fuck any Matrix after the original. I live in a world where Neo and the humans slowly pull more people out of the Matrix and eventually overthrow the machines. Cliche but way better than that horse shit we got.
