The Five Best and Worst things about your Country

The Lunch Legend

GAF's Nicest Lunch Thief and Nosiest Dildo Archeologist
I am interested to know what all of you think are the advantages and disadvantages of your own country or any country where you have lived at least for a few months (and know well enough).

If possible, try to choose something that distinguishes your country from most others, not something that could be said for any countries.

Well, it is hard to say five good/bad things about the US as a whole because the US is very diverse and each of the 50 states are quite different from each other.

So I will go with the five best things of California which are;

-Best Climate-Usually never too hot or too cold.

-Diversity-Every type of people from all over the world, especially Silicon Valley.

-Very Green and Beautiful Landscapes-Especially Northern California including Mendocino and Nappa Counties. Whine is great too.

-Laid Back State-People are friendly and nice and there is little racism anywhere in California.

-ATMs work 24/7 and most up to date technology-California contains the computer technology capital in the world, Silicon Valley which I currently reside in.

Worst things about California;

-Public Education is very sour here (besides the top universities such as Stanford or Davis)

-Earthquakes are common and if you live in Central California you can even loose your life from it.

-Stoners are common especially in the Northern California. The famed Emerald Triangle which contains my hometown has the largest marijuana trafficking in the world.

-Random Weather especially in Mid California. Never a definite season, though that is not necessarily bad.

-The worst thing of California is the price. California is one of the most expensive states in the US. A small 1,200 sq. feet house cam cost $500,000, the same money you can use to create a 10,000 sq. feet mansion in Georgia for not much more, maybe even much less.

Italian here.

Pros:
1- Awesome climate
2- It remain a very green state with a lot of green areas
3- Public sanity
4- Max 1 hour of car and you get to the sea
5- It still manatin a "simplier" way of life

Cons:
1- Politics are bullsht, there is noone capable and the ones that are are considered idiots (for reasons....)
2- Taxes, 66% of my income goes in taxes.
3- Way too many illegal immigrants, expecially in some coties.
4- the roads are destroyed...
5- Not many job opportunity if you don't want to get your hands dirty.

Pros:
- Beautiful women
- Amazing food
- Some places are very, very pretty, like Chiapas & Mazatlán.
- Education...? It's mostly free or very, very cheap (not everywhere).

Cons:
- Everything else fucking sucks: healthcare, pay (and I'm saying this as a doctor), job openings, safety, climate, politics, etc.

Welcome to México! It's nice if you're just visiting and not staying for a long time, I guess.

Canada (Toronto focused)

Pros
- Generally low crime everywhere, and not too many ghettos or slums. Going by what you see in the US, there's probably more slummy neighbourhoods in one major US city than Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary combined
- Immigrants are mostly good people who care about school and jobs and opening businesses
- Universal healthcare
- Hockey. best sport
- Rarely in any global squabbles. An allied supporter at best. So you don't really get any macho military patriotism or countries hating back

Cons
- Taxes. In Ontario, most stuff you buy is 13% tax. Every province is double digit tax except Alberta with their oil money. Income tax and deductions are high and booze, gas and smokes have additional high taxes on top of it
- Things too spaced out. To drive anywhere new, Detroit is 4 hrs away and Montreal is 5 hrs. Just about every major city is so far away you practically got to get into a plane
- Got to say Canada is pretty boring. You go to any USA or European city. Or when I went to Hong Kong, and there's so much awesome history, buildings and districts. You don't get that in Canada except for maybe some 200 year old buildings in Quebec
- If you're not into winter sports, the winters here in many parts of Canada are a pain. Toronto is mild, BC is hardly anything, but many other provinces or places get plastered with snow
- A lot of overemphasis and pandering to social issues and safety. Basically the gov treats everyone like a 5 year old. I'm surprised the gov has never put a sign on every toilet saying "don't eat the shit". There are so many signs, laws and trivial shit the city reminds people not to do thinking everyone is going to ride a snowmobile on thin ice

UK:

Best:

1) Humour
While the comedy on TV may have been neutered in the last decade, we're still a damned witty and sarcastic people, and there's few things or people we won't rip the piss out of, including ourselves.

2)Food and drink
Inspite of the stereotypes, british food and drink is bloody amazing. A lot of it is hearty, simple fair dating back centuries, but once you've had a Cornish pasty, echles cake, Yorkshire pudding, beef Wellington, fish and chips, tikka masala or one of about a hundred other local delicacies, it's hard to be satisfied with much else.

Plus we make a hell of a lot of artisanal goods. Our beer is more varied than the germans, we make more and have a greater variety of cheeses than the french, we produce more chocolates than the Belgians and have the finest whiskys in the world

3)Countryside and wildlife
The British countryside is simply beautiful, and hugely varied. There's no mistaking the Scottish Highlands for the Cumbrian lakes, the valleys of Wales, the wild moors of Devon for the Yorkshire Dales, or the cliffs of Dover for the jagged coast of Cornwall

Outside of cities, where you can walk around safely, expect a friendly 'hello' from everyone you pass, see wild birds of prey, song birds, deer, foxes and rabbits in pretty much every green space amongst a cornucopia of wildflowers or sun ripening crops, it's relaxing, life affirming and tranquil, and never more than about 5 minutes from a pub.

4)Ingenuity
If there's one thing my people seem to love, it's tinkering. Give us some tools and a bunch of old junk and we'll fix pretty much anything, or cobble together a solution to whatever problem faces us.

There's a reason my country has invented so many things over the centuries, and it can be boiled down to a simple tradition of men in sheds, stubbornly insisting there's no need to buy a new one or call in a handy man, because we've had a pretty good idea...

5)History and culture
The big one, the inspiration and the spectre. Whether we conquered you or created you, there's few places on earth we haven't influenced at one point or other, usually because we were invading.

For a tiny island, we have been one of the moat important and influential nations to ever exist, and it's rare to find so much ad a village without some historical significance either at home or abroad. We've bred bastards and heroes, toppled tyrants and exploited former superpowers, and somewhere in the uk there's a monument or museum explaining it all.

Worst:
5) The French
We are really close to the French.

4) Each other.
The Scots hate the English, the Welsh hate the English, the Irish hate the English and the English hate the English, and we all think we're better and smarter than each other, and that the rest couldn't survive without us.

But at least none of us are French.

3) Football
We bloody love football, but we are terrible at it.

We're competitive at practically everything else, do amazingly at the Olympics for our population and size, and invented some of the best and most popular sports in the word that we can more than hold our own in, but all we care about is football and we've not won a major competition since 1966, and it just kills us.

2) The Nanny State.
We invented health and safety, and in doing so created a monster of over regulation and obsession with preventative measures. It's not a fundamentally bad idea, and great for protecting the environment and regulating the food industry, but it also led to hate crime laws and an increasing curtailment of rights and the ability to express ourselves freely.

1) Cities
London is a shithole. Brighton is one big homeless shelter. Birmingham is the worst place on earth.

They're pretty much all failed social experiments that are practically identical in their increasing lack of individual identity, multiculturalism over any kind of shared community, skyrocketing crime rates, gang violence, racial tensions and sexual assaults, all while their rich middle classes look own their noses at the rest of the country, that they no longer share any values or traditions with.

I'm from saudi arabia

Best:
Free health care.
Free education.
Diversity (people from different countries).
Safety (very low crime rate).
Restaurants and markets (couldn't remember something else!).

Worst:
Religious people (some still have problem with music!).
People are still close minded and follow old traditions.
Relationship between guys and girls are still not allowed! (though it got a little better than before).
Pale houses and environment.
Lack of some entertainment that found in other countries.

But things are getting better little by little.

- Good public transport (trains and buses go to practically every single place where humans live or could theoretically ever need to visit like lakes, factories, crossroads etc.)
- Cost of living ain't too high
- Practically no censorship of anything (we even go commie newspapers for ****s sake)
- Access to drinking water from any tap anywhere, we even flush with drinking water

Cons
- Communist indoctrination has turned most people into recluses
- Veneration of alcohol, especially beer
- Pretty bad education (in public schools) and health care (unless you know people, are lucky or are willing to pay for private health care)
- Ticks and mosquitoes are incredibly common (you can't go into a tall grass without spraying yourself or sit around a campfire or have an open window at night without protection)
- Mafia in control of the state at the moment

Mexico

Pros:
-Affordable medication
-Great food (local cultural dishes and even their take on other countries food is too notch)
-Mix of different Europeon architectures
-Nice in the rain season with mostly warm year-round temps
-Great people

Cons:
-I hate nearly all styles of local music (especially that crap with tuba, trumpets, and accordion...my wife calls it narco-music as it's the cheap crap the narcos tend to like)
-I have a fear of open sky and hate the 6-months from November -May where it rarely rains
-Theft is more common than homicide...People will steal anything here
-No healthcare
-Flights back home (the U.S.) are more expensive than certain European flights (I haven't been back to the States since 2016)

I love this place though and prefer it over my homeland (Illinois)

Southeast USA
Pro:
Food - from fried chicken to shrimp and grits and all the BBQ in between. I don't know if another region has better food culture.
Environment - you can be either at the beach or in the mountains in the same day.
People - southern hospitality is real. Say what you will about race relations in the US but black, white, Hispanic, ECT. If you say hello and nod to a passed by you most likely get a friendly response
College football - more passion and fun than the NFL.
HealthCARE - the level of care you get in this country in fantastic. Research and innovation are happening all the time.
Bonus pro - freedom because 'murica!

Con:
Public education - it's just not very good. There are private options but you are paying the premium and your tax dollars still go to the failing system.
The healthcare industry - the care you receive is great but costs are out of hand. It's going to take someone a lot smarter than me to fix it
Driving - things are spread out enough that driving is basically required and I swear to God we have some of the worst drivers on the planet.
The media - it's all about sensationalized headlines and maximizing clicks. It's getting harder and harder to pick out the truth

That's about all I've got. I feel like any other con I could come up with would be just bitching about first works problems

Pros:

-Delicious ethnic cuisine, including halal kebabs made of murdered white girls

Charlene.png

-Police force rigorously trained to deal with racism, islamophobia, transphobia, homophobia and a few other -phobia's I can't remember without my handbook.

google-images.jpg

-Diverse, cultured cities where you can experience the joys of twerking at Notting Hill Carnival before you pop in to the Mosque to worship Mohammed (peace be upon him). Then after hitting the club scene you can top it all off with a halal kebab from Abdul's - all in the same Friday afternoon.

Notting-Hill-Carnival.jpg

-Beautiful scenic coastline, with sea views frequently ornamented by the sight of migrant boats carrying upwards of 50 vibrant youths, heading straight for the shore.

migrants-640x480.jpg

-An educational system with the clear-mindedness and impartiality to promote a non-native for publicly stating that the lives of indigenous people do not matter.

an491Gb_460s.jpg

Cons:

Cons:
- Systemic racism in all levels of British Society, which has at times forced members of the migrant population to lash out in pain and righteous anger.

- Monuments to white supremacy on every street corner

- Divisive language like "white lives matter" is not punished harshly enough

- Too many people who look back in anger over things like grooming gangs which we keep telling them have nothing to do with race or religion

grooming%2Bgangs.png

-Poor wi-fi and food at our hotels are forcing migrants to lash out

1593204212046.jpg

Sweden. pros:
Clean for the most part
Nature is nice
Good infrastructure when it come to internet, railway, roads etc
Public education, health etc is working quite well even if there is some obvious flaws.
It’s stills relatively safe

Cons:
Lax migration has caused lots of unnecessary shit.
Segregation
Housing crisis, especially for young people.
Government run by numbnuts
Lax justice system
Our Nordic neighbors these days think we are the butt of the joke. And they’re not wrong.

I live in italy.

Best:

Food
Cars\bikes
No sjw or woke mentality at all (at least where i live)
Some sea\mountain places to go during vacations
How beatiful women are (but very shallow)

Worst:

Law, both for work stuff, burocracy and criminal stuff
It is a pretty racist place.
Politicians
The fact that people like maria de filippi and barbara d'urso have a gigantic success on television speaks volume about the average italian person.
General ignorance and regressive mentality (in here the "oh so now nerdy stuff is kinda cool" was never a thing)
Do i have to stop at 5?

I'm italian but i live in germany so i'll go with germany:

Good
1. Public Health Care
2. Politic is okay, compared to rest
3. Good diversity, a lot of different cultures
4. The "Working" situation is really good
5. Public infrastructure is nearly flawless

Bad
1. Food quality is meh. Even if you have the different cultures, the quality is not there. Getting good fruits, fresh fish or really good vegetables that need sun is nearly impossible here.
2. The Weather. It's bad, like really bad.
3. Internet infrastructure. IT's incredibly bad. Like to a point where is really laughable.
4. Deutsche Bahn
5. Racism. There's still some dipshits like the AFD.

Texas is pretty much it's own country TBH

Pros :

1.) Diverse food choice - If you like Mexican cuisine to BBQ, steak and chili, to Southern comfort food to fresh seafood (shrimp, fish, etc). Whataburger...
2.) Cheap gas, cheap cost of living, easy to find jobs, decent education and health systems, etc.
3.) Melting-pot of cultures - You'll find of all kinds of people from all kinds of countries/backgrounds in public and private schools, companies, government, sports teams, etc. People are generally very warm, welcoming and friendly.
4. NASA, Johnson Space Center, lots of museums and malls and things to do/see. Lots of wildlife, zoos and hiking/nature, too. If you head out to the desert areas and camp out at night you can see lots of stars and otherworldly phenomenon.
5. Music scene is pretty awesome in areas like Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, etc lots of concerts and festivals. Every big band/artist comes to Texas during their tour.

Cons :

1.) Hot/humid weather 8/12 months of the year. Hurricane season is legit scary.
2.) No mountains or snow or anything related to fall/winter outdoor/indoor activities.
3. IT'S TOO BIG! (you NEED a car to get anywhere, doesn't matter if you live in the city or suburbs. Everything is severely spread out. I live in suburbs of Houston and I need to drive MILES to get groceries). Traffic is miserable, too.
4. Weed is kind of sort of decriminalized, at least where I live, but yeah, we're behind other states.
5. General annoyances : Mosquitoes, cockroaches, crazy gun owners that don't practice safety, truck drivers, racism, etc

Dude you can't imagine. We are so incredibly behind where even countries like Poland are lightyears ahead of us. It's not even funny.
Did i also tell you that it's incredibly expensive? Just to give you and idea. 10 GB of Data costs 15-20 EUros here.

England

Cons: Idiotic People, Middle Class Agendas, Terrible Train Infrastructure, Nepotism over Skill, "Shitty" Public Toilets.

Yeah, those evil bastards trying to preserve their homeland.

Hmm okay, do you live in germany? If not, i don't know how you want to form an opinion on this matter.

They're dipshits and have Nazis on their own side, like official Nazis. They contradict themselves basically once every month, and their leadership lack brain.
But sure "preserve their homeland", because "we are getting invaded by Foreigners", that are basically saving our economy because every german is too "smart" to work in a fabric where you get payed shit.

Top 5 things:

1._ Top public universities are totally free and rank amongst the top 150 unis in the world (although very hard to get into due to competence)
2._Cost of life is really low
3._Lots of places very beautiful places to visit
4._Food is cheap and really good
5._If you are well educated you can easily get a job as most people lack even essential skills like english or a bachelor

Worst 5 things

1._ Murder and rape rates (women have it pretty bad unfortunately)
2._Jobs are poorly paid, especially if you compare them to any developed country
3._Jealously is rampant throughout the country due to a chronic shortage of opportunities, and sometimes even your own relatives plot against you (been there) if you are somewhat successful
4._Lots of injustices committed against poor people, indigenous people and minorities
5._Most people measure success by your color of skin and money instead of your intelligence. Science is really deprecated here

I like my country and my family but due to the disadvantages of my country I am moving permanently to Australia as an academic as soon as this pandemic ends.
