The games were absolutely amazing, but the handheld didn't shine for me until GBA SP. I played my og GBA under a lamp and it was still way too dark. Amazing games though like tactics ogre.

Cost effective but I'm assuming you want playability as well? Find a used SP with the brighter screen (AGS-101), then an ezflash IV or whatever your preferred method is.
More cost effective? A regular SP is good too, but you will wish you had the nicer screen

And yes, the Famicom ones are beautiful. I was lucky enough to get both the US and Japanese ones. Although they are mostly the same, there are some changes in the back and the packaging is completely different.
Yes. If you can get an AGS-101, go for it. It was backlit, not like the regular SP which was frontlit, although I guess the price will be quite higher for the AGS-101 today
It was a black unit with the silver faceplate, along with two other faceplates (flame and camo, iirc?).
Of course, it's got all that annoying FCC info and the serial number sticker on the back. If you got one from a country that doesn't mandate that stuff, you got the better deal.
Yup, the sticker is ugly, but I wanted one because it was pretty cheap back in the day, but in the end they ran out of sight. The US 20th Anniversary one does have the sticker on the back but luckily, the Japanese one doesn't.

Barely working DS / DS lite + DS flash cart. Then dump all the GBA cartridges you buy and play on an emulator on any system you want. I prefer PC + usb SNES pad, which is around $10.

You can get a backlit Advance for $100-150 on ebay. Huh. I might do that one day.
I have an SP, but it is nowhere near as comfortable.
Anyway, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was what I got with my system as my first game. Fucking terrific game, loved it.

There are a lot of great DS games but the comparisons in your list make a pretty compelling case for the GBA that I hadn't considered before.

The GBM looks stunning. Very sharp screen. But it's too little. Too small. I have one, but I don't play it. Just keep it as a collector's item.

I still have my GBA SP, but the front light is an ugly solution and I gave away my original GBA as it was too difficult to use without modification. I picked up a Revo last year and it actually boosted my interest in the system again. There has been a little bit of craziness going on with the pricing of them, and the emulation of the other supported systems on the console is not as amazing as I have hoped, but for someone who wants to play the systems games on original or cloned hardware, and still wants to keep things digital, it works extremely well.

It's true. I think it would have been fine when I was younger but it's just a little too small of a screen. The eye strain is real.
I love the novelty of it, though.
So... i just picked up a black DS Lite becuase I can't find an AGS-101 around here. I don't really like playing DS games on my N3DS, anyway. Used to have a white Lite long ago but the triggers yellowed, the hinge cracked and the touch screen was permanently out of calibration.
So I thought, hell, I'll just get a DS Lite for now, they are pretty easy to find. Found this black one in incredibly good condition for $40.
Got my GBA games and
1) wow, sure is nice to play these on a screen bigger than a postage stamp
and
2) NOOOO What is this ghosting!? The ghosting is horrible! I don't remember this!
They are very high quality, the screen cover is perfectly clear. The rest of the faceplate has a sort of fine vinyl texture, not smooth like the official ones. But it's good, it's a matte finish.

The terrible part is that it had 8bit audio output. Sounded like shit.

The GBA was phenomenal. Those were simpler times: it was the last great system without 3D, online, or touch screen controls. Just pure gaming.
The GBA and SNES were golden ages for 2D classic Japanese gaming. Like, we got four Mega Man Zero games on the GBA. We'll never see that kind of indulgence again.

Same here. Only system I ever sold, and I regretted it pretty much the day after I did. I still own a SP though, so it's not all bad.
GBA is also one of those systems that I'd like to spend some time dabbling with from a homebrew standpoint. There's plenty of developer docs available, and the hardware is right in that sweet spot between 'too little hardware to do anything interesting without fighting the RAM/ROM/CPU/etc all day' and 'so many resources that I can just toss up a project in Unity and go nuts'.
Yep! So if you ever get a scratch on the screen bit you can change faceplate and it's good as new.

Loved the GBA. First system was GBC but this one came next. Had the original one first but then got the SP and gave the old one to my cousins (which they proceeded to break not too long after XD). I remember getting the SP in a Toys R Us bundle with Mega Man Battle Network 3 (which I sadly no longer have.)
The GBA to GameCube cable was one of the most epic things I got when I was younger. Using it with Pokemon Colosseum (which also sadly I no longer have) was awesome.

Never knew the N64 had an add-on to play GBA games, learn something new every day.
Did have the GameCube/GBA player, which was a brilliant piece of kit. Came in a lot of use when i lost my original GBA on holiday.
Have in the last year replaced the GBA with a GBA SP, which needed a new battery. Still one of the best consoles i've owned over the years.

I sold Breath of Fire, Breath of Fire 2, SSF2 Turbo Revival, SF3 Alpha, LOTR: The Two Towers and lord knows what else. Don't really regret it.
This is good to hear - I was recently reminded about them and now that the holidays are over, I was thinking of picking up one for myself.

If it makes you feel any better none of those games go very much at all. I'm pretty sure they are all $10 or less used, the LOTR games go for like $2-3.
Tbh, most GBA games are pretty cheap. The Square Enix games tend to be the most valuable but you are still only talking about $20-25. I recently re-acquired Warioware Twisted for $18. Totally worth it, that is a game you just can't run on anything else.
The trick is finding hardware that is still in good condition. Most handhelds are all scuffed and scratched, have a wonky button, missing faceplates, etc. I've seen a ton of DS systems with broken hinges, floppy top-halves and so on.

The washed-out colors wasn't the fault of the system, it was more like older games needed to have a washed-out palette as the original GBA didn't have a backlight of any kind.
