[The Game Business] Peter Moore Interview: When Xbox took on PlayStation and won

And won? They ended up in third place that gen too despite launching earlier than everyone else. But the 360 was a fucking amazing console that just fell off a cliff near the end because of dumb decisions.

But the PS3 ultimately outsold the 360…

As many others have already stated, they didn't win anything. They came out strong, had a lead for a while while Sony got over their BS and got the PS3 on track, but MS didn't win a thing. In fact, I would say it was pathetic the way they squandered their lead and, combined with Sony losing a lot of the goodwill they had built up with the PS2, MS should be embarrassed to have lost the generation. It was there for the taking, but they blew it while Sony found themselves and stormed back.

Do they really think they won that generation?
If you are purely looking at sales figures they didn't win, but there's no question that Microsoft had way more wins with the 360 in terms of software than Sony did with the PS3.

Pretty much every 3rd party game ran better, they nabbed a bunch of time exclusives, and the online service was light years ahead of PSN.

Everyone is here is saying they didn't win that gen, but 360 was probably the most influential console of the 21st century. It's going to be almost impossible for MSFT to win any generation in terms of sales as long as Japanese people favor products designed in their homeland (they always will), and they don't have a strong foothold in Europe.

In the USA it was a 360 world.

The gaming world we live in now was birthed by the 360...for better or worse.

It was a moral victory if not an outright one. Xbox 360 took a massive amount of market share away from PlayStation before Xbox One came along and PS4 took it all back.

What? No, it was because bumpgate, not because their design was "faulty". Laptops and GPus from that era have the same issue, so did the PS3 fat.
The design was awful. There's enough information about what went wrong and a lot of it was due to them trying to save a nickel. The RROD issue is the only time I've personally seen hardware fail consistently. I've said this before but in a year I had over 3 Xbox 360s from the RROD, and I was primarily only using it for a couple of games.

They didn't won totally saleswise but the brand grew a lot and it was the moment they gave PS a real fight.
I always preferred PS but X360 was an awesome console. Didn't care about Xbox after it.

When did they win? Because PS2 was still handling business the 1st few years of Xbox 360's life & PS3 was released a year after 360 but ended up ahead.
360 absolutely capitalized on the early launch of the PS3 stumble. It took a while for PS3 to catch up and pass the 360 both in terms of sales and quality of 3rd party games.

It was also far ahead when it came to online play.

PS3 obviously won when it was all said and done, but let's not pretend the 360 wasn't kicking its ass for a while.

The Wii won, no?

When Nintendo's Wii was the best selling stationary console of the generation followed by PlayStation 3 and lastly, only slighly behind, the Xbox 360.

They didn't win but they definitely were beating PlayStation for the first 5-6 years of the generation. Something that was unthinkable in the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube days.

Sad that they bet the future on Kinect/Xbox One instead of continuing their insane momentum from the early 360 days.

The early 360 era showed Microsoft could be a serious competitor if they tried. They could've stayed ahead of Sony the whole generation if they hadn't pivoted to the Kinect.

It should be pointed out that Xbox 360 continued to sell past their 84 million sold mark, as did PS3. Sony updated their numbers in 2017, but Microsoft never did. Prior to the number sold reported by Sony in 2017, they had reported to have sold 80 million in November 2013. Microsoft reported 84 million as of June 2014. So who really "won" between the two is unknown.
