Every one of you must have brought a console to play 'that' game, it was after launch and you saw Tekken Tag running in the shop window or whatever. So what was the game that made you purchase the necessary apparatus ??

GBA: Super Mario World

Halo for the Xbox. I bought the cube and PS2 on launch day - so there really wasn't a game that drove those purchases.

GBASP - impulse...

I just wanna say that I actually read the other posts in threads like these. Or at least the ones by people who I like. Anyway:

c64: Jumpman (I played it at a friend's house and was hooked)
NES: Super Mario Bros
Genesis: Strider, Castle of Illusion
SNES: Super Mario World
N64: Strangely, Banjo-Kazooie. I didn't buy one at launch because I was going through a not-into-games phase.
Playstation: Williams Arcade Classics (for Joust), Bubble Bobble + Rainbow Islands. These two retro packs pretty much single-handedly snapped me out of the aforementioned phase.
Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure
PS2: Drummania
Gamecube: Super Monkey Ball
XBOX: Toejam & Earl III (also JSRF, but Toejam pushed me over the edge)
Wonderswan: Klonoa Moonlight Museum
LYNX: KLAX

Playstation: Final Fantasy VII
Playstation 2: Final Fantasy X
N64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Gamecube: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia
Gameboy Advance: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

I'll stick the last two generations. All the consoles I got before were because I was young and played video games, not really because of a certain game.
I bought these systems because of these games:

Playstation - Resident Evil
Saturn - Panzer Dragoon Saga
N64 - LoZ: Ocarina of Time
Dreamcast - Resident Evil: Code Veronica
PS2 - Onimusha
Xbox - Munch's Odysee (honest. I didn't even have Halo for the first year I owned the system)
Gamecube - Resident Evil Remake
Gameboy Advance - Castlevania:CotM
Gameboy Advance SP - so I could actually see my Castlevania game :D

Gee I wonder if you can tell that I'm a Resident Evil fan (or Capcom fan). I bought 4 different systems because of their games.

Xbox: Knights of the Old Republic
Gamecube: Starwars: Rogue Leader
PS2: Dynasty Warriors 2

PS-One: Final Fantasy 7
N64: Mario 64

SNES: Super Mario World

GBA: Zelda Alttp
GBC: Conkers pocket tales
GB Pocket: Super Mario Land 6 golden coins.

TG-16: Splatterhouse (and I never even owned it)
Genesis: Sonic, X-Men
Playstation: Soul Blade
Dreamcast: House of the Dead 2 (WTF was I thinking? Soul Calibur, asshole!)
PS2: Um nothing at launch. Bought it just because I could. Later MGS2.
Gamecube: Literally nothing. Some guy unloaded it on me.
Xbox: Halo
GBA: F-Zero MV
N64: Just tying up loose ends
Saturn: An unmarked disc that loads Radient Silvergun for some reason

Genesis = Streets of Rage 2
SNES = Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy III (after seeing friend play them)

Amiga: North & South
Comodore 64: Summer Games

DC: no particular game, it was the graphics
GameCube: Nintendo, I was more excited about Pikmin than the other 2
PS2: FFX
GB: Mario
GBA: FireEmblem and Metroid Games
DS(yet): Advance Wars DS
PSP(yet): Sexiness

Megadrive: Sonic
SNES: Super Mario Kart
PS: Wipeout
Saturn: Sega Rally
N64: Ocarina of Time
DC: Shutokou Battle 2
PS2: Ridge Racer V
GC: Super Monkey Ball
Xbox: JSRF
GBA: Castlevania
DS: Mr Driller DS
PSP: Lumines
PC: Doom

nes: the nes was inflicted on me...i actually didn't like videogames at the time. that quickly changed.

genesis: hadn't played one when i bought it. a friend and i pored over some magazine and decided we'd both get genesis rather than tg16.

snes: super mario world. that same friend's older brother had brought a super famicom back from japan, and while he didn't let us play super mario world, he'd let us watch him play. i was smitten. with the game. not my friend's older brother. who was a dick.

saturn: panzer dragoon amply made up for the disappointing daytona and vf1 ports.

psx: ridge racer. possibly my favorite launch game ever.

n64: super mario 64, which is my favorite launch game if ridge racer isn't.

dreamcast: i was so impressed by vf3 that i imported. for like $500. from buyrite. it came dodgily packaged but intact.

gba: imported this as well, for castlevania: cotm. i'd had very little experience with the gbc or ngpc, and was shocked by the invisible screen. i didn't really get into gba until the sp.

ps2: zone of enders, onimusha, and the bouncer. so yeah, the ps2 and i started off badly.

gc: i disliked the n64, and didn't intend to buy a gamecube, but mario sunshine was irresistible. i spent way too much on a modded console, and nearly killed myself driving straight from the airport to the post office to pick up the game. i tried very hard to convince myself i was enjoying it. i'm still taking the resultant trauma out on forumgoers.

xbox: the three smilebit games. two of which were terrible disappointments. but panzer orta held its end up, and i flipped for halo.

psp: ridge racers. pleasing echo of the ps1 launch.

edit - i bought these much after the fact, but:

turbo duo: decided i had to have rondo of blood. also wanted to sample its massive shooter library.

neo geo: metal slug 3 and shock troopers. possibly the two best games ever.

Xbox - Halo/Sega

PS2 - SSX/Hype

GC - No real launch game interested me, bought GC for what was to come (Like i said, i cant ignore console hype, every next gen machine must be purchased. Except handhelds, which dont push any boundries, which explains the lack of interest)

PSP Nothing on PSP interests me, infact id say its really weak with it games line up. Quirky games can go to hell and racers are only fun with 2 players (none of my friends will buy a PSP untill late this year)

Im buying one to watch movies/tv shows i'll download on my pc, handy for my long journeys to gym and university. Im also waiting for Pro Evolution to be released

SMS: Space Harrier
NIN: SMB
GB: Metroid II
GEN: Sonic
SNES: SMW
PSX: Street Fighter Alpha
SAT: King of Fighters'95
DC: Marvel vs. Capcom
PS2: FFX
GC: REmake/RE0
XB: Halo
GBA: Castlevania CoM
SP: Wario Ware

eventually:
DS: Feel the Magic
PSP: Ridge Racers

i'll just mention the recent consoles:

DC - i was gonna buy it for sega games anyway, but Sonic Adventure was the main factor.

PS2 - i was gonna buy it for FFs, but Devil May Cry sold me.

Xbox - Panzer Dragoon Orta.

the only system I ever bought specifically for a certain game is GBA. And that game was Lufia. And god damn was the dissapointing time in my gaming life. Luckily the gba has since made up for it though actually buying a gba was still a waste of money since I have a gameboy player and thats all I use anyway.

Nintendo 64: Super Mario 64
Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure
PlayStation 2: Silent Hill 2
GameCube: Resident Evil/Resident Evil Zero/Resident Evil 4
Xbox: Dead or Alive 3
GameBoy Advance: Super Mario Bros. 2
DS: Super Mario 64 DS
PSP: Ridge Racers

PS2 - FFXI
Dreamcast - PSO
Xbox - Halo
N64 - Goldeneye
Super Nintendo - Super Mario Kart
GBA - Street Fighter Puzzle
GB - Pokemon
GC - Animal Crossing (bought it at launch, but really never played it until AC)
GameGear - Ecco the Dolphin, or however you spell it

Also, i'd like to add, that most of the more recent console purchases were from the peer pressure I got from Novery. That goes double for most of my game purchases.

Nintendo - My brother had one...I was too young for a game that sold the system
Super Nintendo - Super Mario World
Nintendo 64 - Mario 64
Playstation - Return Fire, plus the promise of FF7 in the future.
Playstation 2 - No particular game, but I wanted RPGs
Gamecube - No particular game...but I'm a Nintendo fanboy. Fell in love with SSB:M
Xbox - Halo
GBA - Dragon Warrior III and the Castlevanias.
Nintendo DS - Combination of Advance Wars, Castlevania, and stupidity.
PSP - Still waiting for something compelling, but I'm sure it will come.

I'm pretty much detached from gaming now and I'll be getting married soon, so I probably won't be investing much money in the new systems for awhile. I can't think of an "IT" game for the next Gen yet...probably cus there isn't much info.

NES - Super mario bros
SNES - Street Fighter 2
N64 - Mario 64
GC - Metroid Prime

SMS - Wondery Boy
Genesis - Streets of Rage 2
Saturn - Daytona
Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure

PS1 - FFVII
PS2 - Tekken Tag

Xbox - ?_? i think it may have been halo and the promise of heaps of FPS's

1st PC - Wolf 3D
2nd PC - Half Life
3rd PC - Qauke 3
4th PC - Half Life 2

GBA SP- Metroid Fusion

NES - SMB, everyone had this game! It was as common to me as morning cereal. A little tyke, just laying in front of the tv in my tighty whites going through Mario. Played it on christmas videos we have, when there was nothing to do.. It was entertainment and the best thing on the system to me. Whole reason I had one.

Genesis - Sonic, the first real against the norm system. For the cool kids. Sega tv, Sonic.. I remember you could ask a class which system they had and it would split right down the middle between Genesis and SNES almost every time. Oh, and when my best friend's Snes busted and he got a Genesis. I was so pissed at him, the trader

SNES - Super Mario World/name Nintendo. I just knew games were nintendo, nintendo was games. SMW was also great, I loved everything about that game. My cousin and me would just go nuts with this game. Played it a half hour before school for so many mornings. Fond memories

PSX - Number one, it was a new system which was an amazing leap. And if I could find the right game I'd be on board. For me it was Tekken 2, seeing an arcade in my house. Big screen no less. But historically, this was FFVII's success

N64 - Super Mario 64. That started it. I had to have one once I'd seen it in motion. Absolutely beautiful. But it eventually came to a point where Goldeneye was a huge system seller. I remember once it got popular, that game spread like wildfire. Any group of friends played that to death. Just goes to show people love a game that has guns and brings the multiplayer in you out.

DC - Again, being the first next gen. But other than that, it was NFL2K, Sonic, and Soul Calibur's amazing graphics. Just one sexy machine, and great advertisements imo. A damn shame it didn't last. This system rocked. Such a sleak design that spoke next gen at the time.

PS2 - MGS2. PSX brought a ton of games to my attention. MGS was maybe the best. Just a spectacular game, and when you seen mGS2's visuals and hype you couldn't stay away. I'm not sure I got as hyped for a game as this. Also, GTA was such a cool game back in the psx games. I got quite a few hooked on it but it never spread. So I couldn't believe the PREVIEWS. I still have it's premiere preview in GI and I remember thinking how much this game would rock. And it did, I had it right away, and BOOM. Everyone loved it. Definetly a system seller.

Xbox - Halo. The word of mouth on this board alone was crazy. I remember not being that impressed with it after I bought it. Such a pocket full of money to throw down. However it paid off after some time, and Shenmue II eventually came which was partly a system seller for me.

Gamecube - That was the problem.. they had not a single franchise game to launch with or talk about in near future. Closest thing was Super Smash Bros Melee but for me I was sold on Nintendo still. In the end, Resident Evil became the best reason to own this system, though hopefully the next Zelda changes that.

You've posted twice in this thread and still can't contribute an actual response to the thread's proposition? wtg

SNES: F Zero
Genesis: Herzog Zwei (nearly a decade after the system came out. still...)
Neo AES: KOF98
PS1: Final Fantasy Tactics
Saturn: Vampire Savior
N64: Mario 64
DC: (the announcement of) Sakura Taisen 3 (still purchased it much sooner for Capcom titles, etc)

GAMECUBE NINTENDO: Unity :(
