The game with the perfect atmosphere

What game(s) has had the perfect atmosphere when playing it in your opinion? Like you really felt that you played in that gameworld for real.

I think two games standout for me. And it's Zelda OoT and Super Metroid.

I'm inclined to say Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, but my opinion is probably skewed by the fact that it was the first game I played with fabulous voice acting and a truly dark tone/setting.

Panzer Dragoon Saga, the save/upgrade/break spots inbetween areas. You could practically smell the unmistakable mix of campfire and dragon.

Possibly Marathon. The spookiness coupled with all the extremely believable and well written communications just completely sucked me in.

God of War
Eternal Darkness

mostly because these two has such a fantastic soundtrack, and great great story. you're really in these games when you play them.

I don't now what's your concept of athmosphere, but for me is the overall experience of mixing very well the gameplay, audio, video and presentation:
There is a lot of games that achieved that but I can't remember a lot of them right now:

KoTOR, Halo:CE, Unreal Tournament, Morrowind, PGR2, Outrun 2, Dino Crisis 3, Rez, Panzer Dragon ORTA, FarCry Instincts, Riddick, DW5, Warioware, Metroid Fusion. System Shock 2, Undying, Psychonauts, DOAX, Indigo Prophecy,Shenmue 2, POP The sands of time... Etc

There are a lot of games with excellent atmosphere, but here's my list...

God of War
Resident Evil 4 (Mainly the 1st disc)
Pikmin 2
Fable

Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
Gunsmoke (Arcade - CAPCOM)
Captain Quazar (3do)
Alone in the Dark
Crimson Skies
Unreal
The Immortal
Ico
Loaded
Tomb Raider
Morrowind
The Horde
Prince of Persia
The Thing
VR Golf
Diablo
Killing Time (3do)
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Shenmue
Prince of Persia: SoT
Resident Evil 4
Out of this World
Shenmue
Final Fantasy IV
Flashback
Resident Evil 1
Nox
Shadowgate
Undying
Shadowrun
Diablo II
Halo
Rally Cross
Halo 2

The GTA's, definitely. All 3 were incredibly immersive, especially SA. It's just how everything changed gradually when driving that before you knew it, you were out of the ghetto and driving through the woods. The attention to detail with everything short of the graphics was helpful to the immersion as well.

Pikmin 2!

agreed ---- I just put that game in on rainy days to run in the background as I draw or play handhelds.

Metroid Fusion had a great atmosphere, it actually felt very much like you were in some science-facility gone 'ghost-ship' in space, filled with broken aquariums and lose animals ---- and whenever you'd step back to soak it all in, some booby-trap would fuck your shit up :lol

Radiata Stories has great atmosphere, just exploring one of the best in-game cities ever in a game --- it lives and it breathes too.

For me. Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes, followed by Snake Eater, and Sons of Liberty. In that order. Nothing beats that intense Gray Fox bit.

I see lots of current gen titles on the list. Is everyone here really young or did I misunderstand the question?

Atmosphere to me is more than just 3-D graphics, its about how the art, music and gameplay comes together and there are a ton of older games more deversing to be listed.

Hard to beat Silent Hill and MGS 3. The grainy footage in the former and the feeling of being in the wilderness in the latter are really compelling an interesting. A lot of games don't have "atmosphere" so much as good art direction. It's a hard question to answer.

Or maybe people just felt like newer titles fit for them. Did that cross your mind first or did you just want to be condescending?

Coming from soneone who picked dynastry warriors? I'll be condescending just for you tek.

It's funny, because one of the reasons people like the series so much despite being insanely repetitive is because of the atmosphere. It's a pretty fitting choice, but I suppose realizing that doesn't quite make you feel as special, now does it?

also, i dont believe a 2d game can be as immersive as a good 3d game, and i think atmosphere is all about immersion. Its hard to feel like you are the character you are controlling if you can only move in 2 dimensions

I'm the reason for that? Except for the fact I haven't spoken a single bad thing about the game in the past and actually quite like the original.

As for feeling special, I feel quite special the last few days, especially for being picked out by someone of your calibre to as a target for flaming. Perhaps your violent reaction to my comment about older games hides your own inadequate history with games made prior to 2000? So are you like 14 ?

I believe Metroid takes this thread.

I would say Super Metroid up until the day I played Metroid Prime. Not to say most of the other suggestions are chopped liver. I do strongly believe 2D can have just as good atmostphere as any 3D game.

Go play Another World right now.

Sure, we'll go with that, if only because it shows how little you know of what games I prefer, how quick you desire to show your (pseudo) superiority, and how dated your playbook of interweb insults is. You're a one-stop time machine to 1992 Usenet.

alright then mr. 14 year old. As for interweb insults, I think the record shows you're the one to instigate this discussion by attacking me personally, so I fail to see what you mean by the whole usenet nonesense. I feel repressed rage. Maybe you're on somone's joke account who I have debated in the past and was recently banned. In anycase, if you have more insults and want to display more anger, PM me.

To every single letter of your post I say "Amen."

Metroid Prime FTW!
