Gears of War Art style and Atmosphere Degrading with each Re-release

I thought I was imagining that the cutscenes were worse than I remembered them. Wow. Should've trusted my gut.
The original is better in every way. But to be fair, the degradation of Gears started as early as the very first sequel, which was extremely far removed from the tone and feeling of the first game.

Gears 1 was action-horror. Gears 2 was generic Hollywood. And it only got worse from there.

It's always surprising how many of these remakes/remasters fail to capture the art direction and atmosphere of the original despite having higher fidelity assets

true.

the only one that I know, that replaced a ton of assets and all the textures, while staying 99% true to the original, is Perfect Dark.

it was so true to the original that I remember at the time it came out, some said it's a barebones remaster... because they didn't remember how the original looked, and the new assets just looked like people remembered the original looked through their nostalgia glasses.

it's a near perfect (hehe) remaster imo.

I beat the Re-Remaster recently and something felt off. I reinstalled the 360 version and the difference was pretty stark. The new version is just too clean for it's own good. These remasters losing the soul isn't just a meme. These subtle effects do a lot for the atmosphere.

The problem is that they didn't bother to fix everything they fucked up in the Ultimate Edition for Reloaded.
Crazy to me that they swung and missed...twice in the graphics department, but tbf Reloaded doesn't really seem like they touched the assets very much, if at all, from the Ultimate Edition. A shame.

Anyone tried emulating the 360 version? Can 60FPS with a resolution bump be achieved?
You can play the original pc release instead of emulating

I'm more surprised about the amount of differences between Ultimate and Reloaded. I thought it was just a 4k port with some lighting changes.
