The game with the perfect atmosphere

Chrono Trigger - Possibly my favorite gameworld, everything just seems so familliar and nostalgic like a dream you can't quite shake.

Sonic 1/2/3
Micky Mouse in Castle/World of Illusion both had amazing atmosphere for Genny-era games.

Goldeneye: 007 - Despite the fact that you weren't really doing much in the way of Bond-ish activity or stealth this was the first game that really made me feel like I was James Bond, it was just so cool sneaking around the various environments trying to use your surroundings to your advantage erstwhile using cool bond gadgets, oh, and the tank missions :D .

Panzier Dragoon II:Zwei - I remember the first time I played this game, the impression the atomosphere leaves is just so overwhelming, I caught myself getting bogged down in enemy fire several times as I stopped to stare at scenery.

Nights - I remember spending hours just kinda going around on foot exploring every nook and cranny of the levels in this game, the amount of stuff going on that you never really get to spend time to appreciate is overwhelming, I still play this game today for atmosphere alone (beautiful soundtrack included.)

Beyond Good & Evil - What a unique experience, just the size and scope of the world is enough as it is, but to be able to fully explore such an idylic world almost seamlessly, you just loose yourself in this game.

Myst - It's Myst, the whole game was atmosphere, coupled with the soundtrack it sucked me in like almost no other game of the time.

Omikron:the Nomad Soul - Lots of people didn't like this game, but I got really wrapped up in the world and charecters, you really felt like you were out to solve a mystery and sometimes the options layed out before you were staggering (although really most of it was still pretty simply scripted.

Deus Ex - For the same reasons as Omikron, only Deus Ex felt alot more well-planned out and balanced just about perfectly so you never felt too overwhelmed, but you still had very large areas to explore.

The Dig
Lair
Sewer Shark
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story - Like a world ripped straight from a storybook.
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
LoZ: ALttP
LoZ: OOT (another game I Explored for Hours).

Shadow Hearts - (the alternate timeline concept is one that usually doesn't work too well, but it is brought to life really well in the SH series and really adds a new coat of paint to the typical JRPG aesthetic and serves as an interesting plot device while never feeling too over-the-top or fabricated).

Ico - What can I say that hasn't been said already, a masterpeice in terms of atomosphere.

Indigo Prophecy - This game went out of it's way to make you feel as if you were an active participant in its world, to the point of leaving you to engauge in the most mundane of everyday tasks, and the soundtrack was stirring (even the licensed tracks fit very well).

So many games with great atmosphere, I could continue this way for days on end :D

Ocarina of Time nailed down the epic feeling of the game *perfectly*. The classic story of good vs. evil was so very well told, and every bit of the world fit so very well. Excellent music too. So freakin' good.

Maaaaaybe a bit too early to say, but Shadow of the Colossus. HOLY FUCK the demo did it for me. It was the closest to Ocarina of Time I've ever felt. Beautiful landscape, music, and a great sense of scale. Hope the end result is just as epic as the demo felt.

For me, one of Pikmin 2's greatest strength was its atmosphere. I loved how Olimar explored this alien world, and the basic explanations and conclusions of ordinary things we're used to on Earth nailed down the childlike wonder of the exploration itself.

And while I love really imaginative games like the aforementioned, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay really had me feeling like I was in the worst prison imaginable. Truly excellent.

Link's Awakening gets a nod. The dreamworld of Koholint Island was superb.

Beyond Good & Evil

I just tried this game on the ol' emulator. And...uh...I can't really see how anyone found this enjoyable. If I touch something, I die. My only attack is a kick, and if I happen to be moving while pressing the kick button, I'll run. So I have to wait for the little leech things to slowly crawl to me so that I can kick them. Or I'll die. And I can't jump over them either. Am I missing something?

play the pc version. from the sound of it, you barely played any of it.. since you never seemed to have obtained the gun.

Exactly...the kicking leeches part is like 2 minutes of the total game. The first two minutes. The game will get very different and varied later on.
Although I have to admit Another World is freaking hard at times (not the leech-kicking though)...lots of trial and error parts for me at least, and the game is on the short side. But it's still quite a ride. :)

Some great choices here...

Some of mine

The Last Ninja (C64)
Paradroid (C64)
Another World (Atari ST)
AD&D Gold Box Series (Atari ST)
Zelda OOT (N64)
MGS (PS1)
Monkey Island (PC)
Syndicate (PC)
Half Life (PC)
Starcraft (PC)
Thief (All of em! PC)
Hidden & Dangerous (only number 1 PC)
System Shock 1 & 2 (PC)
Deus Ex (PC)
Homeworld (PC)
Grim Fandango (PC)
Ico (PS2)
ZOE2 (PS2)
Halo (Xbox)
Fatal Frame 1 & 2 (Xbox)
Riddick (Xbox)
Beyond Good & Evil (Xbox)
RE4 (GC)

All these games reeked of atmosphere...

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Max Payne
Max Payne 2: the Fall of Max Payne
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

And I just know F.E.A.R. will be added soon to that list

Shenmue 1. No game world has ever been as detailed and thorough as this one. Everything felt so solid and real; shopkeepers could be seen coming to and from work, Ryo's friends walked around town, looking in stores etc, the beautiful weather system...and the music!! Nothing has come close, and it doesn't look like anything will anytime soon, except for maybe Oblivion (if the AI lives up to expectations).

Other games I found to have great atmosphere would be -

*Ocarina of Time
*FF7 - especially the part where you're up in the Shinra building, it's all quiet, no one's around, and there's blood all over the floors
*Chrono Trigger
*Ecco the Dolphin DC - I thought the game itself was pretty average. I took it back the day after buying it, but it had amazing atmosphere. The graphics and ambient music captured the setting beautifully. If only the game wasn't so hard and didn't lack a sense of purpose.
*Phantasy Star Online
*Half Life 2
*Fable - it just felt like a fairtytale...the music, the graphics and fantastic art style, coupled with the way in which the townsfolk went about their daily business...

In terms of Atmosphere and actually making you feel like you are actually there experiencing everything going on in the game, nothing even comes close to Metroid Prime. Without a doubt, it is the most atmospheric game I have ever played, truly immersing you into the gameworld and making you actually feel like you are in Samus' gravity boots.

Other games that have great atmosphere include Resident Evil 4, Half-Life 2 and the GTA series (namely SA).

The Shenmue titles are perhaps a guilty pleasure, however there's no doubting their might when it comes to atmosphere. You really do get into Ryo's world.

On the other hand Resident Evil 4 also oozes atmosphere. Cheesy action genre atmosphere, but atmosphere all the same.

Pikmin 2 however, is one of those games that suck you in without you knowing; it also features smooth gameplay, so that helps in getting you into the groove of things.

The final choice overall has to be Super Metroid, though. Perhaps it's nostalgia, but who can forget the stellar opening moments of that game which set the scene for the rest of the experience? Only Metroid Prime rivals this title for perfect interactive atmosphere (imo).

Others:

Grim Fandango
Link to the Past
Metal Gear Solid
Freespace 2
Deus Ex
ICO
Beyond Good & Evil
Star Wars KotOR
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Panzier Dragoon II: Zwei

Blade Runner. The visuals, sound effects and speech just made the game to feel exactly like the movie. One of the best movie to game conversions ever.

Blade runner, that was the fo shizz, incredible atmos. All you junkys wanna play it if you havnt you will be impressed.

Super Metroid. Thread over.

No question. This thread should really be titled: The game with as perfect an atmosphere as Super Metroid. NO game has ever surpassed it's Sci-Fi Melancholy. Equal parts haunting, lonely, and epic, it stays with you long after you've finished.

Ocarina of Time is in a league of its own. Everything felt right with this game. Once in a lifetime experience.

Honorable mentions:

- Metroid Prime. Regardless of what you think of the gameplay, the world Retro created was not only faithfull to the series, it was one of most imaginative ever created. I love just walking around, shooting stuff and being amazed with the flora and fauna.

- Outcast. Loved the story and the backdrop. Extremly well crafted for its time. Shame we never got to see a sequel.

- Secret of Mana. I love the story, lighthearted tone with a serious backbone.

- Banjo & Kazooie. Enjoyed exploring every inch of the world. I know there's a lot of Rare hate going around but the original Banjo & Kazooie was just a work of art, imho.

- World of Warcraft. Never really played MMORPGs but this just sucked me in. Areas blend into eachother beautifully and the variaty is just awesome.

- Skies of Arcadia. Didn't care much for the gameplay, but the backdrop had me coming back everytime. Being an airpirate, sailing from island to island, just rocks.

The Fallouts had AMAZING atmosphere. A convincing take on a dystopian post apocalyptic society, with NPCs who acted the part.

But the real answer is "L-ll-look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?"

Another vote for Blade Runner. Glad to see so many here agree. I think one of the reasons it's so atmospheric is the minimal and judicial use of music. You get to hear the individual drops of rain, the hum of the electric neon lights, the hovercars fly through the city. Then you walk into the terrace of your apartment and the musical theme kicks in making you just sit and stare in awe.

It's such a wierd game because you could almost play the entire thing with just a one button mouse. Didn't even have conversation trees. It was just looking around for clues and being at the right place at the right time. But it was just so much fun going to new locations, tracking down replicants, using the Vohgt-Kampff and Esper machines. Unlocking a new part of the well told story. They really made a good job making the game dynamic too. The game changes a little each time you play. I make sure to play it again every now and then as if travelling to another land.

capitalCORN, +1 for mentioning two great PC games and bonus points for mentioning the original system shock which had excellent atmosphere. (kicking the pants off of the sequel)

I signed up to GAF just for being able to respond to this thread. :)

It hadn't been mentioned before so I'd like to throw Galerians (PS1) in. It came out when Resident Evil was big so it didn't get that much attention, being also some kind of (but not really, except for the controls) survival horror), but the atmosphere is truly great. I just loved it when at the beginning of the game, you woke up in some strange lab room and you didn't know
- who you are
- where you are
- what you're supposed to do
- why you're here
etc.

Especially from the player's view, you didn't know yet what kind of opposition you're up to, but the background of yourself and your enemies is gradually revealed. The world in the game turns out to be of a bleak and depressing nature, just as I like it. Unfortunately you're easily spoiled for the game. I only realized afterwards that even the manual gave away so many things that I've preferred to learn during the game. So if you're ever get your hands on it, don't read any reviews, don't read the manual, not even for learning the controls. Don't watch the opening FMV either. :D
Oh, and the successor to this game, Galerians: Ash on PS2 is total and utter crap. I paid only 10 bucks for it and it was still a waste.

Having said that, the game is not that great overall including story, although having good controls and backgrounds aside many many nice cutscenes (if you like the art).. But the atmosphere easily rivals that of Silent Hill (all of them). If it weren't for Galerians, Silent Hill would've been my choice, great games, a bit lacking in the story department, though.

Unfortunately I haven't played Super Metroid or Shenmue but I'm planning to grab ICO and probably Shadow of the Colossus, too.

This is Galerians' "hero". Telling the name would already give away too much. I'll let you know, that he's male, though.

Pikmin 2, Metroid Prime, Super Metroid, and Beyond Good & Evil for me.

I was so glad to see that BG&E got a mention in here.

OK, right. I forgot about the Shenmue series. For the win!

And just because Killzone gets such a bad rap around here, I'm going to add that to my "honorable awards" list. Great atmosphere, no doubt.

People will laugh at me but I found Planetside had a perfect atmosphere for its genre and on certain locations.

YEAH YEAH I actually paid a few months to play this game.
