The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown

This reminded me I still need to catch up with the grand tour.

S1 felt like a massive step back from Top Gear but I've heard it got better over time.

It's fantastic and far away their best stuff.

Yeah I will check it out. Got Prime for Clarkson's Farm Anyway (which was fantastic).
I just found season 1 felt way too scripted. Top Gear was obviously scripted too, but it either left them enough freedom to have plenty of genuine moments too, or at very least sold the illusion of there being more genuine moments better.

Grand Tour is literally the entire same crew from Top Gear. Only thing that changed was the name and where the money was coming from.

Except it wasn't "literally" the same. They added new segments, took out some of the old ones (like the celebrity racing), went with a moving stage going to various countries, etc
To me it's clear that since they were willing to make changes to the formula they tried to go for a more scripted approach, and the result was just boring.

But as I said, I've heard the newer seasons lost some of that obvious scripting. So maybe I'll give them a chance now that I'm back on Prime.

There were certain segments the BBC claimed they "owned", which caused them to come up with new things. Like they couldn't even call the news segment "The News" because the BBC said they owned that.

The adventures and scripted set pieces are tiresome with the show.

Just give us normal car reviews with these three and I would be a regular viewer.

Why does everything have to go Transformers no attention span.

They didn't get popular following the herd. They broke the mold when they reinvented Top Gear, which was to make a car show that was enjoyable even if you were not a car enthusiast. There's lots of car reviewers out there with personality, just find them and watch those instead.

Its not top gear now tho lol......they said at the end of series 3 of grand tour, there's no more car show or reviews, just the big adventure style 1 offs

Try old filth gear episodes lol

Excited for this. Of course those boys are way past their prime (no amazon pun inteded), but I still love them.

I also love cars a lot and the amount of laughs I got from Top Gear while they were the hosts is unrivaled.

Car shows are dead. Too much concern for the climate now among younger generation, and us old fuckers are long past the heady days of buying fast cars.

Back in the day it was reviews for cars you could never afford anyway. They were just aspirational. Occasionally the man on the street would be thrown a bone for the best car you could actually afford.

I don't think they were ever in their prime doing Top Gear. They've always been old and fat.

Just watched it. Pretty fun.

Them filling the camper up with water and may falling over hilarious he must've been freezing great episode.

It was ok, it lacked direction I guess. For example, after they arrived at the first castle they just showed up at a random pizza place.

There were some genuine funny moments though and the best thing for me is how they talk amongst them, it's hilarious.

Better than the last one but not the best by far. I enjoyed the cars and the race for the worst. The ending was weird and out of place I thought. I always enjoy the banter and there were a couple of scenes that got a good laugh from me. I was entertained.
It's no Clarksons farm though. Now that a good show, and a great thread.

The Guardian are seething about this.

And I love that it's pissed them off so much (and I'm a Grauniad reader).

Great episode too!

The guardian is free to make there own program if they think they can do better.

I readed there article its straight up cringe.

Yeah was ok. I am happy they did not film much under lockdown, a few more episodes like that and the show will die off. Stick to a few high budget specials or do a weekly show. You can't get away with a special which would make a passable tv episode.

Aside from season 1 (live die repeat was amazing), the show has gotten a bit lazy / samey.

Luckily their own individual shows are very entertaining.

I enjoyed it. Certainly not their best. It felt off in the beginning but picked up midway through. The ended was a bit dumb, but I expect a bit of that from the guys.

I feel like we will slowly see the end of them messing about with cars and more doing their own thing ala May in Japan, Clarkson and farming. It's a shame Hammond hasn't done a special.

He did The Great Escapists on prime which is lots of fun.

I just searched and I can't find it. Nothing shows up on Google either.

I thought The Great Escapists was terrible. And I am a fan of the other spin offs.

I find this youtube channel as close as you are going to get to that now.

Couldn't care less about other car programs.

The only thing that i care about is those 3 as they have great charisma with eachother, the cars are just a thing i put up with as a theme. I have zero interest in cars myself.

But the reason why i say smaller cars is, it feels more real then riding through abidabi or whatever with 2 million buck cars over a high way cut off by one of those princes. It's so far distanced from cares i give it killed the whole gran tour series for me.

I rather have them drive through africa with 1000 buck cars from ebay and see how far they get. Its far more fun to look at.

The link is dead for me. It is strange as I had a dream a while back about Hammond having a show with one fo the guys from Mythbusters and it was terrible. Thankfully I woke up and realized it was just a nightmare and it does not actually exist.

wtf was the ending? making fun of covid everywhere and taking over, or simply chinese trade soon surpassing america's?

that episode was allover the place and was heavily scripted ..i get they were trying to do something in the middle of Covid but it felt like 4 different shows put into 1
and i didn't really get the ending at all...was it a swipe at China and covid?

I liked it. Not as good as previous specials, but was still worth a watch.

Also, loved the American village at the end. If anybody didn't know, that is the Shaw Ridge village in Swindon, England, which does kinda look like it's from the USA.

I liked it too. Of course, American cars are silly for Europeans, but it was fun to watch. Hammond as their "Armerican" is always fun.

The Guardian article about it was even funnnier. I mean they call comic / sci-fi fans toxic, but that was another level.

Trade, that they make everything, or america and China are in bed with eachother, which makes sense since america helped fund covid research
