The Grudge - My Review

I don't think I'll ever get the undying love for "The Ring". I bought the DVD after many recommendations from co-workers and friends and didn't see what the big deals was. All I saw was crappy movie with an extremely slow plot. To me, it just didn't work on any level. Ah well.

It was ok... but way, way too predictable. I was very satisfied with the ending, however. Too many movies take the happily ever after approach. This did not; it lived up to the quote at the beginning of the movie. You can't escape it. Factoring in an eternal haunting (and reminding you of it until the last frame) jacks up the horror level, so it helped the movie because it did have a lot of weak points.

The acting was pretty good (for being a thriller and all) but that stupid throat noise the ghost made was retarded. Anyone can do that. I know I can.

Hoo boy, I thought that this was dead and buried. Like The Grudge should be.

Willco: So you liked the English ending, did you? Wait for two Tuesdays, rent Ju-On, and tell me seriously that the English ending is still better. You could see the English ending coming from a mile away- SURPRISE NOT DEAD! The ending in Ju-On is more fresh and creepy- you see Rika eat it, and she did. She's fucking dead. And so is everybody else.

El Papa/Pimpwerx combo pack: The only reason I'm being horribly critical of The Grudge is because it disgraces Ju-On so horribly. I wasn't expecting it to be the king of modern cinema- I was expecting something close to Ju-On.

jett: How are you watching Ju-On? It comes out 11/9, yeah?

After having seen both the Grudge and Ju-On, I can honestly say that they are both complete and utter shit. Both have plots so thin they're anorexic and incoherent images that are supposed to be disturbing, but are so campy that they can't even manage to be unsettling. There is no big scare, no payoff, nothing to think about, and no reason to watch.

It was on TV where I live, on the latin american version of Cinemax. Next Sunday they're going to show Ju-On 2 or whatever. I don't think I'm going to bother.

Number one movie in America for the second week in a row!

Not really. But I don't hate the ending either. You have to understand that nothing scares me or really surprises me at this point, and I'm pretty much immune to any scares the genre can churn out.

I don't think that whathisfacejapanesedirectorguy was trying to surprise anyone with the ending. I mean, they say they saved the house in the subtitle before Buffy enters the room. The ending you described sounds like Sci-Fi tripe. OH NO THE WORLD IS DOOMED... UNTIL THE SEQUEL.

Besides, Raimi confirmed the DVD is getting a new ending.

i can't believe you tools hated this movie. i thought it was awesome! creepy as hell and even though the scares were "cheap" sometimes, it was excellent.
