The Halo Bulletin: 8.8.12. UNSC Weaponry Showcase

The SAW is an animal.

Frankie clearly trolling with the dub step/garage house.

I actually wish they'd use the sniper sound from Halo Anniversary. Sounded like a motherfucking cannon of hell on earth. Amazing.

The SAW looks badass, can't wait! Although I do think the design is more shotgun than LMG.

On a related note: a few months ago, I wrote a post about how a LMG is sorely missing in the halo sandbox and quite a few people jumped at my throat.
Suck it, haters! :D

Halo 4 is shaping up awesomely.

Haha I remember that!

Have yet to watch the video all the way through (Actually I'm only a few seconds in) and I have to say what the fuck is dubstep doing in my Halo?! Halo is one of the few franchises that actually has GOOD music. I'm so fucking tired of dubstep invading everything. Gah.

Edit: Watched the video without the "music". Sound effects sound a bit off to me. Rocket and sniper especially, too "pew pew" laser-y sounding IMO.

Looks fun, can't wait. I really don't like most of the gun sounds though, I find the sound of the SAW to be very generic but it its bearable.

Can someone who works at Bungie confirm if those are the final sound effects for the guns?

EDIT: I MEANT 343 gah it's late :(

I really dig the idea of the SAW. It will chew up individual players, but it can be used as a suppressing weapon against groups, particularly on choke points. Used well, squads can have one player using it in a supporting role, suppressing the other team when on the attack - or when escaping with a flag.

I've got to wonder how effective a suppression weapon it can be if it burns through ammo as quickly as they say. Your classic suppression weapons usually have a crapload of ammo but wild recoil - it seems like they're doing something different here with the Halo 4 SAW.

In close quarters maps the SAW will be devastating, I'm really glad the speed of combat has increased significantly and movement looks more fluid. In Reach it sometimes feels like Spartans have rigamortis.

So good.

Really like the SAW, and the railgun looks awesome too.

Too bad the SMG isn't returning. I liked it much better than the AR in Halo 3.

Some of those weapons sounds are really underpowered.

DMR sounds like punching paper. What happened to the fantastic sound from Halo 2

and what did they do the sniper rifle

Just going from the information in the Bulletin, I think it will be an effective suppression weapon, but only for a short time. You won't be able to fend off a group or hold down a choke point for long given the speed it plows through ammo. But deployed well, it might be able to overrun an entrenchment, or pin down attackers for critical moments. Sort of the same way a portable turret can, but with greater mobility and without a warm up, at the cost of a more shallow clip.

This is how I feel for most of the guns, but we seem to be in the minority on the matter.

Apparantly they sound great in-game. People who have played it at shows with headphones on came back blown away by the impact of the sound design, and have said all the audio released so far is really compressed by comparison.

It all sounds very muffled to me - and very processed - but given the near-universal praise from those who played it, hopefully it's just poorly compressed audio.

Railgun and SAW both make me a happy person... So good. If I had one complaint, it would be the weapon sounds still sound kinda off, suppressed almost. That said, I imagine when the game is playing through a sound system it will sound much more meaty.

Also, I wonder if there are a few more UNSC weapons that have yet to be revealed, cause it really looks like the SMG is returning:

Finally, unrelated to UNSC weaponry, I can't wait to find out how this gun behaves:

Hopefully this is the case. I went back and re-watched the version of the video with just the weapon sounds, and almost every gun sounds terrible and weak. I still don't know how anyone hasn't been able to at least get in the same ballpark as DICE in that regard. Previous Halo weapon sounds were okay (but not amazing for the most part), but everything in the video sounded weak as hell. Completely baffled at the people in this thread praising the weapon audio, almost every shooter I have played in the last several years sounds better. Everything else looks great, so hopefully it is just some sort of compression issue.

Might as well post my thoughts here:
Some of my observations on the video released:
  • The medals seem to have been changed, they don’t have the “soft” style anymore and look more solid.
  • Ordnance Drops themselves seem to have their own dedicated medal when you finally get them.
  • Looks like a new armor ability or maybe the Forerunner vision icon got changed (note the glasses in the picture).
  • Before when getting shot the screen went red, now you get it yellow-ish and the pattern in it has changed a bit.
  • Another armor ability I have not seen before, it has a Spartan helmet on the design.
  • New shotgun design, which you can zoom in with now.
  • The Saw and Railgun are interesting, look like great additions to the sandbox (Both give off the Doom/Quake like vibe).
  • The Sniper still looks the same, but they have toned down the brown.
From the Halo Bulletin:
ASSAULT RIFLE

Chris - Relative to other Halos, this feels to me like a slightly more powerful Halo 3 AR. Some people might have some prejudice against the weapon because it’s not the newest, flashiest weapon on the block and there are a lot of other things that will catch your eye first. That being said, this is one of the best looking weapons in the game IMO. Gameplay-wise, we’ve tried to extend the range on the AR a bit from what it’s traditionally been and made it a tad more accurate. This is one of my favorite weapons in Halo 4 and I’m particularly fond of pairing it with a long range rifle in MP using the Firepower armor mod.
This is not what I want to hear, Chris.

SAW

David - The SAW is, without a doubt, the most psychologically intimidating GUN in the game. It looks unlike any gun you’ve seen before in a Halo game, and packs a world champion-class punch when spraying molten projectiles at everything in your way. The SAW is also incredibly useful as a force modifier when encountering a vehicle on foot. A skilled SAW user will use every tool at his disposal to clear space while shredding surrounding vehicles.
You make me so Jellis, David.

RAILGUN

Kynan - I like the Rail Gun since it’s basically a Sniper Rifle, Rocket Launcher, and Spartan Laser all wrapped into one. You charge it up to shoot a direct damage shot that explodes on impact. WIN!
Talk more of this sexy talk, Kynan.

In other news, I'm liking the playlist changes.
Dat bump of the Railgun.

i first thought that perhaps they had e.q'd the sounds so they cut through the music a bit better, but that doesn't really make sense when they then released an audio-only version.

Weapons finally sound great. Except for the SAW which sounds silly for such a big gun.

Having both the DMR and the BR seems unnecessary.

It just seems like that medium range rifle spot is already pretty crowded when you include the Carbine and the Light Rifle so having two UNSC variation on it seems like a lot.

I think it needs to be this way to facilitate the whole COD esque system. Gotta give people some sidegrades to buy.

They function differently enough to give players a preference on what they like. Also, a weapon like the DMR is very effective at long range, but not as effective as the BR at medium range.

I would say each of these weapons seem to have enough of a difference to justify em.. Nothing wrong with a little variety, even if some weapon roles are very similar.. I know a few guys who vastly preferred DMR over the BR, so by allowing both weapons it will keep a lot more people happy. I like the idea of building loadouts with certain situations in mind.

Yeah, I was definitely thinking of this more in terms of a traditional Halo game instead of one with loadouts. Having some weapon spawns on the map that have a BR and some that have a DMR would be pretty silly in my opinion, but having them be selectable as your starting weapon for a loadout based on your preference does make sense.

You know, im expecting 90% of the people to be using a BR even on the long range maps. DMR is nice and all, but you have a much bigger chance of surviving if your using a gun good a close and medium range than a gun only good at long range. Unless you only play BTB then its different, but regular Halo slayer...i see no reason to use the DMR at all.
