Soothsayer
That was a mouthful.

I loved these cartoons as a kid, and I love them still. Sure they're a bit altered (especially ROTK) but they do a few things better than the movies IMO. I still prefer their version of Gollum to the one in the movies. The songs are memorable (and for the most part, slightly altered versions of the poems Tolkien wrote in the books) and the animation is great for something done 30 or so years ago. The character designs are wonderful.

But don't take my word for it...

Pretty sure both movies are on youtube in their entirety :)

Loved these movies as a kid, but I haven't seen them in years. The art style was great, as well.

I watched the Hobbit much more often than ROTK, but both were really enjoyable.

My favorite animated art style.

My favorite Gollum.

Smaug is the best dragon to ever be in a movie.

Love the way goblins are drawn.

The Nazghul King is so freaking cool looking.

Love the voice overs.

Love the music.

Love EVERYTHING about these movies. They are just awesome.

:lol The voices were awesome, yeah. These were the voices I heard in my head when I read the books. Gandalf in particular was great.

I think I hear Tony the Tiger singing the Orc songs.

In the new Hobbit they just have to buy the rights to using the track laid down for Smaug here because he can't possibly be done better.

Such amazingly great movies all around.
I remember every year they would air them around the holidays and it was part of the holiday for me.

I've never seen these, except for FOTR.

Gollum reminds me of a Pokemon.

But it's all really weird and trippy looking at all the clips.

edit: Is that Jeff Bridges voicing Smaug?

Wait, is the return of the king like the inofficial follow up to Bakshis LotR? I remember that one ending somewhere between two towers and return of the king.

yeah.. I didn't think they finished the story.. I remember it ending with the Ents.

Edit: according to IMDB after Bashki made it clear he wouldn't finish the story, a TV movie was made (on the cheap) to finish the story.

The Black Gate is just a really large door.

And the Nazgul are riding on Pegasus'.

Hahaha. This is so cheesy.

"Polito-.. Gollum has completed our quest!"

Loved these as a kid and love them as an adult, although for different reasons. Today I can pop one in and always get a good laugh. The soundtrack to The Hobbit is especially hilarious.

Truly ghastly stuff. Bilbo used to give me nightmares. And the ROTK one is just laughables. What's with all the crappy songs? FRODO OF THE NINE FINGERS! AND THE RING OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Why the fuck did they change Saruman's name to Aruman?:lol

I'm pretty sure Saruman was omitted from the Rankin & Bass version. You must be thinking about the shitty Ralph Bakshi stuff.

You're probably right. Still, the Ralph Bakshi one > Rankin Bass Return of the King.

I only saw the Hobbit movie. From what I remember of it, I liked it. Does anyone remember the old Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe animated movie?
