The "I will buy Anything for these games" thread

Ghost

Chili Con Carnage!
All this 360 launch anti-buzz got me thinking about what games would make me buy a console (or upgrade my PC), not games i think should be good, but games i want so bad i dont care if they come with a 3ft spike that you have to insert into your anus before you can play. I realised that these days my list is really really small.

Im kinda interested to find out if its just me or not (hence thread), but to keep things kinda organised I'll set a couple of ground rules for you to all ignore (hell, I know you are just skimming)

Firstly, games that havent been announced, or might not (ever) exist are fine (ie KOTOR 3, Shadowrun), but games beyond the realm of possibility are not (ie KOTOR3 by Bioware, Mario gets laid, etc.).

Secondly, before you all rush to put down games like Heavenly Sword or Motorstorm, think, are you gonna buy them if they get 7up'd or 6.9'd or 7gn'd? If not then they dont apply. I want the games that in your opinion, transcend gamerankings.

That should cover it, so here's my list.

Halo 3

naturally, love the games, love the universe even more, no way i could miss out on this day one.

Mass Effect

All i needed to know was Sci-fi rpg by Bioware, KOTOR was my favourite RPG this gen by a MILE, from the first screen released my brain was already thing "holy shit, pre-order now!"

Metal Gear Solid 4

I wasnt a fan of 1 or 2, i suck at stealth, dislike waiting around in games, but MGS3 taught me stealth can be fun, and it was also such a visually stunning experience. This is the only game on my list where i dont give a shit about the story, its all about the experience.

New Tie-Fighter

Blowing the shit out of X-wings and Calamari crusiers, id give just about anything for a chance to do that again, on any system.

Supreme Commander.

Chris Taylor, maker of the greatest RTS ever, is back. This one wasnt an instant choice, but as soon as i saw the similarities to TA, the sheer scale of the conflicts, I'll spend £1000's on my PC to make it able to play this game.

Thats about it, what about you.....?

I'm going to buy a HDTV as soon as my next gen starts, but when it's about games:

- Will buy the Rev for the new Smash Brothers or Zelda
- Will buy the PS3 for Final Fantasy

I want many games.

The ones I want the most(on next gen consoles) are:

Killzone, MGS4, WipEout next-gen, Halo 3, GT5, I-8, Warhawk and Mario 128.

You'd buy i-8 even if it got 7up'd?

No way that game is going to get a 7. It looks awesome and it's being made by Insomniac.
BUT, if it did get a 7, it would require some research before I eventually bought it.

You really think that killzone is going to look anything like the movie showed @ e3...?

Well any game could end up with a 7.

This is why im saying, what games will you buy regardless of review scores.

Rev - Mario

Prime example, after Mario 64 i would have bought any mario game, no matter what anyone said, but after sunshine? I'll wait for reviews.

I think Grand Theft Auto is the only remaining franchise that I would buy without question on any home console. And purchase said console no matter what if it were exclusive. At this point, I think it's the only major franchise that has not dissapointed me in the last few years.

Halo, Kotor, Mario, Zelda, etc. None of these heavy hitters have maintained the same level of excellence to me. And I can't really trust reviews on them, because they seem to be guaranteed a certain level of review charity just by the nature of how "big" these releases are.

Mario's my favorite series behind MG, so i'll get it even though Sunshine disappointed me. Because even with that disappointment, its still my favorite 3D platformer this gen. Which says alot about the series.

Probably mine too, i think it says more about the competition than the series thou ;)

Yah that's true also. As long as there's a larger variety in settings for the next Mario game i'll be happier with it than I was with Sunshine.

Obviously it will not have the cohesive scripting nature of a motion picture aswell as the overall fmw look but the polygonal models(- ultra hair detail) and such.. most definetly.

Killzone won't look anything like that video. It will look terrible compared to other FPS's on PS3. That video was 100% CG

More importantly do you think it will actually play any better than killzone (PS2)?

Yah because Killzone on the PS2 looks terrible..Oh wait its actually the best looking FPS on the system.

You are right it did look terrible. A good engine in my opinion is the one that is able to produce good looking visuals and run them at a good frame rate. I think killzone looked like crap and had crap frame rate. A good engine on PS2 would be the Jak engine, RE4 engine, DMC engine etc.

Killzone had alot of smart design choices. It's original in alot of ways and it's also the best fps on the PS2. Hardware held it severly back though. Slowdown, glitches, terrible physiqs(aswell a too short of dev time)..(still the best looking fps on the console though)

Heavenly Sword and DOAX2*

* unless Team Ninja's costume designs continue to get worse with each new game**
** who am I kidding, I'll get it anyway

oh please! TimeSplitters 3 is the best looking FPS on PS2 and forget about these hardware held it back bs. It wasn't the hardware, it was the developer.

The framerate wasn't the greatest but it wasn't terrible either. And the actual visuals were anything but bad

Without going down to the details...

New Mario (true one)
New Zelda (would need to be as good as OOT at least)
New GTA (revamped controls and gameplay)
Metal Gear Solid 4 ( 'nuff said )

Heavenly Sword

..what if it gets 7up'd?

Seriously, the trailer looked great, but i havent seen anything that would make me pay whatever the PS3 costs for it.

The framerate was terrible. And there were ridiculous moments of pop-in. It attempted to be the best FPS on PS2 but it failed. It has some interesting artistic things going on, but the gameplay wasn't particularly revolutionary in any aspect.

You can imagine Killzone being fun to play because you can imagine it being pretty, but there's no real reason to believe they'll create any sort of killer app bar a movie that got shown.

Games that I would buy a system just to play..

Perfect Dark ... ( Although if PDZ seriously f-ups big time, I won't ever put blind faith in this or Rare again )

Next Zelda.
Next Mario Platformer. (Even in sunshine there were some gameplay moments which convinces me that the next one is not to be missed.)
Next Tekken ( confidence was a little shaken with Tekken 4, but Tekken 5 has put any doubts to rest. )
Next Virtua Fighter

I approve of your faith in the gaming press to score DOAX higher next time around.

To answer your question: I enjoy reading game reviews, but I've never not bought a game I'm interested in based on its review scores. That said, I've got no problems with admitting a lot of my favourite games would score 5 or 6 on any sensible review scale.

Seriously, the trailer looked great, but i havent seen anything that would make me pay whatever the PS3 costs for it.

I have. But as far as my taste in action games go, they had me at the first tech demo.

If Xbox 360 gets the next Splinter Cell, I will buy it for sure.

If they had next gen SC on 360 on launch, I would be in line right now.

- Rallisport 3

- Ico 2

- Zoe 3

- Warhead 2 (Amiga space opera)

- Wings of Fury 2

- Another world/flashback update/sequel

- Daytona USA properly converted

I wish there were enough closet Warhead fans to have stopped Particle Systems going under last year.

didn't know they lasted that long? What had they been doing since?

I-War, EXO (canned), I-War 2, Powerdrome, getting shafted in the Argonaut crash.

They got as far as Powerdrome! Warhead was next!*

* not true

no, it's cold winter > killzone > who gives a shit

as for killzone 3 it will look even better than that e3 trailer, oh yeah, i said it. :D

gt5
formula one
warhawk

are the only games that would make me buy a system.

Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, a next gen SSB, Ninja Gaiden 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta 2, Zone of the Enders 3, a next gen Mario and Soul Calibur 4 :)

The game has to offer some kind of quantum leap in graphics/gameplay for me to buy a console just to play it.

GTA3 and Mario64 (to a lesser degree FF7).

I would rather stab my eyes out then buy a console to play an EA sequel or mediocre games with marginal improvements in graphics.

-Strider 3
-Jet Set Radio 3
-Power Stone 3
-Rival Schools 3
-Act Raiser 3
-Dream Studio 2
-Phantasy Star Online Portable

what

When i say experience im talking about the visuals, sound, the direction of the cutscenes, the set pieces etc. I barely paid attention to the story in MGS3.
