Played my first Zookeeper Battle last night against an opponent with over 400 wins.

Surprisingly, I savagely destroyed them. I was nervous at first, but I guess playing Bejeweled Blitz has payed off. What exactly do the binoculars do?

They reveal to you every single match possible for a couple of seconds.

Got into the game for a weekend but I got turned off by the game's mechanics. Mainly it's too random, sometimes someone can get a power up, the boards are always random so you could get screwed over by not having many oppurtunities. That and the limited to 2 plays after regenerating them (or buying a bottle after your initial ones run out). That and the combo system timing window is just too fast to get any good combos unless the game gives them to you.

Are there any other such "avoid the walls" games out there like KKK that I maybe have missed?

I'd like to know this too.

twist pilot is an unashamed copy of KKK, with the little dead end turns you need when changing direction etc. But the main character is too short and spins too slowly, so there is little challenge. I got bored very quickly and wished my 3DS had a GBA slot :/
 
Yeah Carmegeddon is kind of bad. Not that it is a bad port necessarily, but the original game just wasn't that good. I think it was so well liked simply because you could run over people and see the gibs, which at the time was still pretty novel.
 
There is definitely a skill element to Zookpeer, or the people with 2000 plus Rate would not exist, you don't even get to play against them once unless you win something like 200 out of 300 matches. Pretty much everyone above 1750 rate is pretty good at the game, the people who are above 1950 are godlike and there are somehow quite a lot of them (10K?)

I have played like 10 hours in this game. I never played the original though. I'm enjoying it.

I don't think it matters how many matches you've played. I'm 2000+ at around 70 matches, and I'm nothing special. Encountered someone in the top 100, too.

Good question. I meant to post about this earlier, but I guess that since we're reaching the end of the month I might as well throw my two penneth in now.

I don't think the monthly thread should be a recap, but it should be contemporary with the month it's published in. Meaning that there would not be an October recap thread, but there would be a thread for November.

My idea is the the OP will update the thread each week with the week's highest profile releases, and by the end of the month there will be 4 or 5 weeks worth of great games in the first post that anyone can find. What goes into this first post is entirely up to the thread starter, but there could well be some healthy debate in the thread as to what makes the list.

Also, a few people have mentioned themed threads (similarly to how comicsGAF run their threads). This way, the OP can also give special spotlight to their favourite genres or devs or series or whatever. I love this idea, and it'll extend the feel that this is a curated experience rather than just a list thread.

So yeah, that's how I think the monthly threads should be run. Anyone agree, disagree?
 
As long as the thread is used to curate what's actually worth playing in retrospect. I guess that can be done week to week instead of a month later.

It is exactly the same as it was back in the 90's. By exactly the same I mean AWESOME.
 
i like with the ios control debate that some people seem to instantly forget that some games (+ controls) have a learning period to them. most gaffers seem to instantly forget this and blame their loses on the controls.

thats not to excuse bad controls on ios, because theres alot of that too.

Agree 100%, exactly how I'd want them to be.

The themed/curated bit means it's not just an empty OP on day one, and adding the stuff throughout the month is a great way to see what people are playing. The OP could be a kind of Cliff's Notes for the rest of the thread

alot of posters are quite attached to this thread. i think that one of the ideas was to have a monthly thread would be a recap of the previous month, and this thread would continue- allowing for current games and wed decide what would go to the monthly thread.

basically, the monthly recap would appeal to an audience other than ourselves, aka people who are not dedicated iOS gamers, new to iOS etc.
 
theres lots of plans - the problem is that we're too internet-stubborn to agree and that we're all too lazy to make one.

personally i'd have a monthly thread, with the OP being a summary of last months games and general discussion being about that months games which would let us organise the next op.

so basically JULY IOS OP would have Junes top iOS games, actual discussion would be of july iOS games, and july's best iOS games would be in august.

i think that caters to both audiences.
 
Simply getting rid of this thread and making it monthly would be pointless guys.

It's for finding out what new games are worth playing without having to sift through 'X game is on sale', 'is infinity blade dungeon out?', 'my favorite Japanese rhythm game got updated', 'this game was announced, hype!', etc. which have their place and should continue here.
 
i disagree. the OP in this thread is pretty useless, and this thread can be pretty intimidating if you want to know what games youve missed. i like the fast pace of this thread, but it only really benefits those who regularly visit.
 
Yeah, I don't want two iOS threads to read, it's either this or a monthly thread, and I'd much prefer a monthly thread.

The conversation will be identical, it's just that the OPs will be more interesting and relevant.
 
I wouldn't mind doing next month's monthly thread. I haven't kept up much this month but I'll try to next month.

Edit: Wait, the monthly threads are a recap of what happened the month prior, right?

I think I like a monthly recap better. There's so much new stuff coming out constantly that this thread would be better suited for that. Announcements and such stay in here, and recap of the hot iOS titles released the month prior to the thread's creation go there.

say the monthly thread in november would be "Best of ios October 2012"

Yeah that's what I mean. I like that idea. Have the OP list all the best iOS games from October and the rest of the thread can be discussion about those games.

There's not really any point having a recap of last month's stuff, because there are so many new-big-things on iOS that by the time someone reads that recap, nobody's playing those games any more and any discussion will fall on deaf ears.

The way I see the OP is as a summary of the things that are happening that month, in that month's thread, so someone can jump in and immediately know what people are playing, why they're playing it, and what they might have missed since last week.

The OPs ultimately will be the same, it's just that November's new releases will be in November's thread instead of December's. iOS threads need to be current, it's just the nature of the system and the people using it.

Yes. Monthly for summary of what came out, this for discussions and news. Simple as that.
 
I think I like Sniv's idea of making the Best of iOS November thread in November, then updating as the month goes on.

Waiting a month to see which games actually panned out might be helpful, but who really wants to wait a month to find out? Then after finding out, who wants to discuss yesterday's news?

First week of the month where we wait to find out what's worth playing can be used by the thread starter to highlight the best of a genre, or something? Highlight the last week of the last month?
