I love Kerouac, he is one of my favorite authors, maybe even my favorite one. I just stumbled upon this on amazon. I've streamed some tracks and they sound very interesting. Anyone have this? I think I'm going to buy it.

Bought it when I was a college freshman back when it came out. If you like his writing/mindset/the whole beatnik thing in general then yeah, no reason why you won't like this. Makes Kerouac seem more real than just what you've seen on the printed page. I haven't listened to it in at least 10 years, think I'll pull it out this weekend. For beatnik spoken word stuff I like both Burroughs and Ken Nordine's albums better, but this is still mighty cool.

Nope. Not a fan at all.
With that username I'm surprised why not...

Yeah. I think he speaks well too.

I looked at a Burroughs collection too, "Dead City Radio," which is supposed to be good. Have that?

I'm not familiar with Nordine. Shite. I must get on that then...

Dead City Radio came out almost the same exact time as that Kerouac box set did, and they both made a sizeable impression on my younger self. I love Dead City Radio. As you can hear by the clips on the Amazon page, it's just really well done. Of course, it's a quite different feel from the Kerouac stuff - this is depressing and menacing and frightening (and sometimes funny), not very uplifting or romantic at all like Kerouac can be. Just in case you're not looking for that.

Ken Nordine is more kitsch beatnik stuff, "like, oh man, far out." But a lot of fun as well. I'd check out Colors:

I think he was being sarcastic...;)

I've been meaning to get into Kerouac forever...what should I pick as a starting point? This collection, or one of his standard novels? And if it's the latter, which one?

That is a good point.

Read On the Road first. Then Dharma Bums, maybe?

I like Dharma Bums best. I also like his reading voice, and I too bought this years ago. But for some reason my interest in Kerouac really dried up. I think I dumped it otherwise I would have sent it to you for very cheap :(

Why did it "dry up"?

I dunno. I can appreciate Beat era authors for what they did and what it meant at the time, but I just can't ever seem to get into their writing.

I've been meanin to pick this up..

since I'm Tom Waits obsessed and Kerouac is backed by Waits and Primus as he reads from On the Road.

I don't know. I hate to think it's just being cynical and jaded, but that must be part of it since a lot of the beat meandering seems pointless and empty to me now. I'm sure being older plays a large part in it.
