The Japanese are lining up again... this time for Vita preorders

i honestly don't even know what games i'm getting for this thing beyond wipeout (not a launch title) and lumines (if the soundtrack is good, also not a launch title), both of which i picked up at launch for the PSP 6 years ago :/

gonna need confirmation of things like language support and how downloads work between accounts before i commit to stuff like uncharted...guess i can't go wrong with 3000 yen downloadable ridge racer at least?

Well, people have a desire about something they like, hoping it succeeds.
Other people have a desire about seeing things fail.

Don't see anything wrong with the first line. The second line is pathetic. And your post nears the second line.

On the first line, that's becoming desperate here, I rarely saw that. But this handheld gen start pretty bad on gaming boards, first with all the 3DeathS threads and now this.

Around a thousand outside these kind of stores seems normal for Playstation launches in the past if Andriasang is right so maybe there will be more or less a 1:1 mapping here...but I don't know if it was the case in the past, certainly wasn't with 3DS (where there was reportedly double the numbers at launch vs for preorders outside Yodobashi - but that kind of scaling I think would be impossible for Vita, would be insane vs PSP/PS3 based on the numbers reported today).

I think this is also due to the fact that Sony audience normally preorder more than other consoles' audiences.
We see this with Comgnet, where a certain game on a Sony console has with no doubt more preorders than a similar or the exact same one on another platform, but they can have the exact same debut.

I wish I was there that looks awesome. I waited for line for Wii in America (Nintendo store in NYC) and even though I was alone I met some cool people around me and it was fun.

So, ho many do you guys think Sony will have ready for launch? I'm thinking 600k tops.
As much as there's demand. I don't expect Sony wanting to limit its sales itself.

I wonder if it may go near 1m, still too soon to tell.

i don't see them having 1 million for the Japanese launch.

Doesn't impress at all. There's always an enthusiast group that wants the new thing. Let's see how it does over the course of two years, plus this is expected, the PSP is hugely popular in that market. Let's see how well the Vita does WW. Both Vita are 3DS are gonna be flops, or at least underperform to their respective expectations, IMHO. iOS is just too strong and dedicated handhelds are going the way of the dodo.

notto disu shitto agen.

3ds does well atm wand will do even better when the holidays come

Very very interesting.

Still think 3DS will eat its lunch in the long term. Just so many more good games coming imo.

(I only buy handhelds for Pokemon....though I sometimes pick up racing games or other big nintendo games.....so no interest in Vita personally)

The popularity of PSP in Japan really surprised me, I think it might have the biggest average store space out of all the consoles on the market.

Maybe flop is too loaded. But I do think both systems are going to underperform WW. They both look great and I'm getting both, but the mainstream is moving to all in one devices, which are getting better and better by the year.

No worse than lining up for an expensive product only slightly better than the one you already own.

To be fair, it's at least twice as good just from a pure hardware numbers standpoint, maybe more. Slightly is a gross understatement.

Ooops I forgot it was today. Was hoping to catch it on Amazon.jp. I live in the sticks too so maybe I'll go down to Yamada denki or Bic camera tomorrow see if they still have it.

Guys, Japanese line up for the first iteration of new hardware for anything.

General Japanese just seem to love lining up.

Define "underperform". By analyst expectations? Of course, for them the DS was a great sucess instead of a "omfg this shit is doing insanely well, unbelievable". By that standard everything except phones will underperform hardware wise.

lol memory card cost x2 the price of mario kart 7.
I paid 150 for a 1GB stick back in the day. It sure isn't a barn burner price but why compare it to a smaller sized game in storage capacity?

This is true. Japan loves lining up. It's one thing I never got used to when I lived there.

By the standards set by the hardware manufacturer. So far the 3DS has underperformed mightily compared to Nintendo's expectations.

New japanese console pre-order/launching queues are awesome. :D
<3 those photos!. I'm waiting the ones taken on the launch day.

Okay, then the Vita will perform as expected.
Sony already stated that the first two years will be dedicated to the "core" audience and after the price has dropped they really wanna go for mass market. Which in my book seems like a very solid strategy.

Why does this matter at all?

1. Any handheld made my nintendo or sony would sell at least decently in the East unless it was literally poop in a box.

2. People lined up for ps3 preoreders in the states then lazy people like me still could buy them with no preorder at bestbuy/walmart to sell on ebay

Well this isn't really surprising.

You know what will be surprising? An long line for Xbox 720 preorders in Japan (did the 360 get a line in Japan?).

Why the fuck are you in this topic saying the same shit other people have mentioned?

A 150 of what? Yen? when is back in the day?

Doesn't change the fact it's an expensive proprietary memory card.

this is gonna be fun

How so?

If it was an end all indication of performance it would be, however no one in their right mind doubts the power of Mario Kart.

I always predicted Vita would have an extremely strong opening in Japan, looks like I was right. I still think it might be la bomba in the west tho.

When the PSP launched, I believe 2gb cards were close to $300. Shit was expensive back in 2005.

It would have been much more surprising if the Vita didn't dominate the amazon.co.jp top 10 on its first day of pre-order availability. They've sold out of both versions, so it will fall back into the depths of the top 100 until Sony allocates more units to them, where it will zoom back to number one for a day. Amazon isn't the best way to judge how products in limited supply are doing, unless you constantly check it to see the spikes.
