I thought that too until I hit 400K then 800K....

Its a Lumines in the zone thing.....it just happens over time.

I think the best hint I've read is to always keep track of your ship. The moment you lose track of it and things get crazy, use the bomb.

Oh, and whenever swamped by tons of evil maniatic menonites, shoot your way to a side and move in one direction from then on.

I personally can't say much as my best is around 230K.

yea i saw that score last night. i got bumped down to rank #120ish because of all the 1 million point bastards out there. i have no fucking clue how someone can score that high in geo wars. i thought my 800k was good until i saw the leaderboard.

Sometimes I struggle just to reach 100k because the game is throwing so much shit at me so early, other times it seems pretty mellow and I'm over 100k before I realize it. Around 250k is the best I can do.

1 million point bastards

:D

My current goal is to hit 1.5 Million and from there it's on to 2 Million. After that I'll just work on surviving 1 Million. I've only been playing for 2-3 days now so I have a lot of catch up to do.

It's funny. I kept holding off on buying it since I got a 360 but now that I have it it's all that I want to play.

Yeah, really. Sometimes the game is apeshit crazy by 50,000, and sometimes it's pretty easy going. I don't know if that has anything to do with the way you played up to that point or it's just random.

As far as the million point people, I'm thrilled that I'm finally pushing 500K. :P

Let the black holes grow. Don't kill them before they die naturally. Stay still while it's safe. Charge the green guys, don't flee from them. Circle strafe the screen when nothing seems to be happening - a lucky kill might be the difference between life and death seconds from now.

Don't use smart bombs unless you are on your last life. You need points more than survival.

I don't even qualify for padawan status when it comes to geowars. I don't know what my rank is, but my high score is barely over 100k. To my defense, I really haven't played it a lot.

you shoudl exit to the arcade selection screen totally out of geo wars everytime before you get real good becuase it seems (i may just be nuts) to reset the random generator to make the shit come slow

I remember thinking I had Matrix type reflexes when I hit 200,000. Now its embarrasing to see people with a million while I struggle to hit half that.

I disagree - any time your multiplier is decently high, using a bomb is much better than dying and having it reset. Plus, I almost always have a few bombs left when I die.

If your score is higher than my pathetic 200k - then you are right. But by that point I can't keep track of my multiplier.

That's bad advice. Multipliers are the key to high scores, you have to do everything you can to not die and keep the multipliers up, even if that means liberally spamming bombs when forced into a corner. That's the number one tip I have to score high: don't be afraid to use bombs. Everytime you get a game over and still have bombs left, you're not playing the game correctly.

My high score is practically 600,000, but I haven't played the game since the week of launch.

once i die its pretty much a wrap for me. i'll get to 150k on my first life then proceed to waste my next 4 lives and finish with about 175k. my high is 400k but ive been in a slump lately.

I agree. Unless you are going for the achievement for collecting bombs, those things are your best friend for keeping that multiplier up.

Also, if you die before 200k, you're best off just starting over. Once you get that high on a single life your multiplier is high enough that you can seriously rack up the big points in a short amount of time, especially when those snakes start appearing more often.

here are my tips

1. this sounds totally like something that shouldnt have to be said, but it does. SHOOT IN FRONT OF YOU. when things get hectic 9 time out of 10 you can always clear a path if you shoot in the direction you are moving. Sounds simple but its true.

2. Manage your gravity wells, you dont necessarily have to kill them (i prefer to) but you can used them to suck up some of the excess chaos and know where they are if they explode so you can get ready to dodge.

3. FOrget about the score! Concentrate on playing dont look at the score.

no no no no no! :)

4. Contrary to what has been said earlier, use your bombs when you need to.. DO NOT DIE unles syou absolutely have to because if you do your multiplier goes to shit.. multipliers is where this game's secret is, if you can make it to about 600-700k without dying but you used all your bombs and have a 10x multiplier its alot better than dying all the time and saving all bombs till the end

working up to 600k myself

i live and die by this as well. definitely want to keep your multiplier as hell high as possible if you want to score in the millions. it sucks getting up to 200k+ on your first life, and then dying and losing the multiplier. really feels like i'm starting from the beginning again.

this is probably my biggest weakness right now. gravity well management. i usually make the wells my primary kill, but when 4 or 5 of them pop out of nowhere, then i tend to lose my composure. lately what i've been trying to do is stay conservative and do not just go apeshit and shoot everything in sight because i'll end up triggering a gravity well.

so what i do is make sure the gravity well isn't activated and then head straight on to kill it if there's time. i think the hardest part of this game is when there are tons of enemies on screen and a gravity well next to you is triggered. then all the enemies end up getting pulled closer to you. ugh i hate that.

any other tips for gravity wells out there? i'm really itching to hit my first mil.

How do the multipliers work, exactly?

Also, I keep seeing you guys talk about killing the black holes. Are you just talking about bombing them when they're onscreen or something?

You can kill them by shooting them. They are worth more points after they've eaten some other enemies though, so its not always a good idea to kill them immediately.

Wha...?

Whenever I try to shoot them, my shots seem to bend around them.

I am, of course, talking about after I initially shoot them to start them up

As you kill more enemies you will notice occasionally it says "multiplier 2x", "multiplier 3x", etc. where it would normally say the number of points for killing the enemy. When you get these, the points for killing each enemy is multiplied by your current multiplier. Each multiplier is progressively harder to get, so dying and having it reset back to 1x is bad.

If you shoot the black holes (called 'gravity wells', I think) once, they activate and start sucking things in. If you shoot them more they shrink and eventually blow up. If they suck enemies in they grow.

The other advice I have:

crunker99 is right - shoot in front of you. My game went from topping out at 400K or so to topping out at 1.1M once I started shooting in front most of the time.

I wasn't advocating having bombs left at the end - just lamenting the fact that I usually do

Don't give up when you lose your first life. If you can get your multiplier back up to something decent, you'll be able to get a lot more points. If you get a lot more points you start getting more bombs and lives. I don't have the "survive 500K" achievement yet, but I have a high score of nearly 1.2M - the later lives are nearly as valuable as the first.

They do bend your shots, but if you get a bit closer you can take them out.

honestly all i can say is dont try to let them sit literally charge them with all you ahve got an dyou wil likley kill them before you run over them i activate them As soon as they are on screens and usually i jsut killz em personally i like to not have to worrya bout them but if they form really really early i let them explode for more points

When you get the chance, just destroy black holes. Even though they give you lots of points when they've sucked stuff up, the point difference is minimal to the points you would've gotten from killing the enemies yourself, plus you lose some kills for your multipliers. All of the advice I'd say has been said, use bombs when you'er in trouble, multipliers high, shoot in the direction you're going, etc. All good advice.

I kinda stopped playing the game, at least with the intention of getting a million points. The addiction has worn off on me, but the great thing about a game like this is that it can latch on right away. If you're bored, try playing the game on Retro. No achievements, but you can get in the top 100 of the scoreboard just by going over 150000 which isn't THAT hard.

i just really hate how it starts so slow and takes seemingly forever to get to 100,000 (where the fun starts). ive been playing some of the retro recently. i wish evolved started off as fast as retro does.

I know its starts off so slow because of the Passive achiemevent. I love that achivement but I really wish they could've sped up the process.

Just a question... I play on a 4:3 TV and the screens scrolls right and left. On a 16:9 TV, can you see the entire playfield at once?

heres my pointers

stay in the middle as best you can

and destroy blackholes as quickly as you can. Sure they give extra points when enemies fly into them, but you risk a) them killing the snakes which give out a ton of points and dumbing down their value and b) absolute mayhem which may force you to use a bomb and as you might know kiddies... bombs come every 100,000 points and lives every 75,000 so it's not worth the gamble. If you can avoid a situation where you save both your bomb and your life. DO IT. the multiplyer will make up those points later when you're killing 100 enemies a second :P

Zondaro over at OA & Got-Next got over 1.1 million points. He put up a little strategy guide at OA. You'll need to plug in the magic words...

http://*************/forums/index.php?showtopic=46826

Here's an excerpt:
Zondaro said:
* Gravity Wells are worth more points when they collect more enemies, but then you don't get as much toward the multiplier - which is a big contributor toward high scores.

* Kill the snakes as fast as possible - they are not only tough to kill because you can only shoot them in the head, they will block entire sections of the playfield from being shot with their bodies. I think they're the most troubling enemies in the game.

* Manage the number of gravity wells. A couple of them are good to have because you can get some enemies sucked into them, and the blue circles that come out are not as difficult as some of the others. However, too many of them on screen at once and you can end up in a bad situation QUICKLY.

* Multispawns (multiples of everything backed by a grav well from each corner) are my favorite. It's very easy to take these things out and they are useful for giving you a bit of a pause between runs, because for some reason the next wave won't start until you've killed about three black holes and/or waited a long time.

* The little triangle swarm spawns are difficult but once you master the technique they are pretty easy to clear. The biggest thing to worry about is whether there are any active gravity wells -- they will definately set it of super quick and it will mess up your pattern if you aren't careful. What I do to get past them is stay in the middle as long as possible, when you have to retreat go straight up to a wall and then shoot as far down the wall towards the "base" of a stream as you can. Your goal is to skinny out a portion of the stream that you are going to pass through -- that part is normally around 95% of the way to a corner for me. When you reach that point, cut across and go for the next stream. Below a million, doing this for the first two streams will deplete the supply and the rest will be easy to herd into the middle. - Personally, I've never had much luck with this strat. I usually pop a bomb on them.

* Red ships. You need to get a feel for juking them and letting them pass you and then shooting them. I also use grav wells alot to get rid of these guys. Go for a corner, let one follow you, activate a grav well, and get out of there..the red usually goes in.

* Balance men and bombs. If you are at a low multiplier and have plenty of men, don't use a bomb -- men are cheaper, and you are almost certainly going to need the bomb *more* later in the game.
If you've ever had questions about the black holes and the multiplier achievement in GW:RE, here are your answers straight from the creator!

Q: What are the requirements for getting each multiplier? Is it simply a certain number of points?

A: It's based on number of enemies killed, so although it takes a while to build multiplier at the start of the game, getting a multiplier further in is really quick. The max multiplier is x10, which requires 2000 kills, and there's an achievement for getting it.

Q: Is there any advantage/disadvantage to letting an enemy get swallowed by a gravity well (red circle)?

A: Yes and no... Again the gravity well score is based on the count of enemies eaten, rather than their score; but the score given for each extra enemy goes up non-linearly... The extra score is really meant as a bonus for when you manage to catch the well as it's about to explode, but if you were careful about which enemies you allowed into it, you could probably milk it for points! Whether this would be possible deeper in the game is a matter of debate.

These tips and tricks come straight from the message boards over at Bizzare Studios.
True, but with the original the top ten scores were nowhere near what they are now. I think the fact that every 360 comes with a silver level membership, ie uploadable scores for this game, has something to do with how competitive the leaderboards are. I also think this game will have longer legs because playing it isn't tied to having a particular game, ie PGR2 in your drive. You can hop in and start playing at anytime.
AND BEFORE I FORGET! MY GEOMETRY WARS SOUNDTRACK RECOMENDATION!
I keep meaning to post this site. I love this band's music, and their "Jets 'n Guns" soundtrack is a perfect fit for this game. Best of all it's free! Burn it to a disc and load it ont o your 360 for the perfect Geometry Wars soundtrack!

I bought PGR2 and played it for nothing other than GeoWars... have a feeling the same thing would happen if I were to pick up a 360.
