The Last of Us: Remastered |OT| Game of the Years

Not sure if easter eggs are spoilers but I appreciated the
Jak and Daxter/Uncharted board games
in the toy store
In
Bill's basement
there is an album next to his magazines by
The Shambalas
.

Hang on, hang on

I only found the key card after I'd killed everyone (took 10 tries). Are you saying you trigger the infected the second you pick up the card and THEN have to start the generator? That sounds way harder.
It was actually way easier, or I got really lucky.

You may be monster but you're not alone. I went out of my way to kill everyone in Winter. Seriously, I would accidentally sneak by people and backtrack when I realized it.
Winter and Spring had no survivors.

When I
played as Ellie
I made sure I killed everyone by stabbing their throats. I don't know why, but it made me feel as though it was a rite of passage, and that it'd be a normal way
Ellie
would lash out their frustration and will to live and protect.

Sort of like Clint Eastwood killing dudes in Gran torino. It might not seem necessary, but it was in a mental sort of way.

Oh God no its
hotel generator
time whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :(

Just did it on survivor!
I started it up, ran up the ramp and down the hall where the keycard slot is, waited for the bloater, put down a nail bomb in its path, BOOM, blew up and then threw a molotov at him and he was finito! Then I finished off the remaining mobs with the shotty and or my melee wep.

You can just sprint it once it starts.

Well, they recently performed an unreleased epilogue at the One Night Live thing

OBVIOUSLY INCLUDES ENDING SPOILERS

But I think the ending is beautiful just the way it is. DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DON'T WANT THE ENDING SPOILED.

The bottom line is that Joel and Ellie need each other. Yes, Joel has essentially doomed humanity and becomes the antihero (hell, he's been one the entire game) for the sake of saving Ellie. This is Joel's redemption for failing to save Sarah. This is his second chance, and he can't let either Ellie or Sarah go. This is ND's way of truly showing that.

On the other hand, Ellie doesn't want to be alone. Joel is pretty much the only person who has been with her through thick and thin, and she she trusts him. Now, I don't know if this means that she believes his lie, and I like the way that was left ambiguous. Survivor's guilt is a very real thing, and it's understandable that she would feel that way, but I think that there's more to it in this case.

In my head, I like to think that Ellie knows that he's lying. But she doesn't have a choice; she needs him, and he needs her. That idea is pretty much the core of the entire story, so I think it's a pretty fitting end to an incredible tale.

Perfect.

Wow just saw the option. you guys are right. :(

idiot #4, lost in time... like tears in the rain...
for anyone curious about what happened
in the sniper level, plainr was hiding in one of the houses and the guys were backing up the stairs cuz they heard him in a different spot, but he was actually crouched at the head of the stairs choking them out as they came, "idiot! idiot number two! haha idiot number 3!" then he goes outside and throws a molotov but it explodes on the column he was hiding behind killing himself, and i chimed in "idiot number four!"
integrated streaming is so good!

Fucking brutal. First boss
bloater in the gym finally gets downed.
I end up missing my last shot on the last runner coming to me.
I melee, but get 1 shotted with a bite to the neck.
Loads up the checkpoint back to the beginning of the boss fight. FUUUUUUUUUU!

Playing on grounded. Are the checkpoints supposed to be this punishing?

WTF is going on with the gamma settings in this game?

I tried everything: from setting RGB range from Limited to Full, playing with calibration, adjusting separate contrast and brightness..

It is absolutely mind-blowing thing.

No other game I have played that have a need to be "in the dark" have this kind of gamma issues. From Metro Last Light (on my PS3) to Outlast

I have to manually tune brightness/gamma settings for every damn area to be able to have proper contrasts and details in the dark areas

I am using Panasonic ST50 plasma in the Game mode with calibrated settings

I'm playing this on the PS3, but I want to talk about it because it's been an interesting time so far.

Currently, I'm at
Joel's brother's power plant.
How far along am I in the game?

Well, when it comes to characters, this game is pretty damn great. All of the characters that I've interacted with are totally great and bring their own type of touch and feel to the situations and it's swell. I've enjoyed the story so far, too. There have been some actual moments that have made the whole thing feel special.
The sewer level, for one. That was straight-up crazy.

The gameplay is a definite "eh", and I'm not too into the stealth aspects and what not. It's decent, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table. Still, it works well with the game's narrative. The guns feel really nice, though. That's one of the best parts of the game.

I'm curious as to what makes the story reach that 10/10 level, as I feel like it's been a 7/10 so far. (Comparing it to movies and written media, though it might be a bit unfair.)

Of course that's unfair. Video game reviewers compare games to other games, and that's why the story is a 10/10 in video game land. Video games are still early in their life as a medium, and developers and writers are still working to overcome the challenges of integrating a complex narrative into a gameplay structure and make it work. Games like Spec Ops: The Line and The Last of Us tackle the issue head-on and were properly recognized by critics for it.

I think the gameplay is 10/10, too, though. I usually use stealth to bring the quantity of threats down to a more manageable level and then dispatch the rest with the absolutely phenomenal combat system. I love using traps, weapons, melee combat, whatever, it's all remarkably fun. The animation and sound design lend an unrivaled heft to fights that just makes everything feel amazing. The above-average AI and general fluidity of combat lead to consistently surprising and memorable scenarios. The kind you want to tell stories about.

Almost every single combat scenario is expertly crafted to allow for a wide, wide variety of options and playstyles. The level design itself is absolutely incredible. I don't even generally enjoy stealth games, but The Last of Us makes it good. The level design actually allows you to wander around the small arenas and tackle them in a sandboxy sort of way.

100% agree. The gameplay is a huge part of what makes TLOU so damn good. Some of the best 3rd person combat around.

Yes, the checkpoints are really punishing on Grounded. Most of the time it's not so bad but they tend to remove a few checkpoints in the harder parts of the game. It's doable but can get frustrating.

I see where you're coming from, which is why I added that sentence about it maybe being unfair. Still, I feel like the game's story is not anything special and saying that one type of storytelling can only be compared with one from the same type of media is silly. What I feel has made the game's experience a great time to me so far is how the concept is implemented into the gameplay. But you know, opinions and such.

The best part of the story is yet to come. Curious to see your opinion once you finish it.

I didn't say that it can only be compared to other games, just that was the lens by which reviews were dousing it with 10/10s and hyperbolic praise.

The Last of Us is a good story with several incredibly powerful and memorable scenes and characters, but nobody is saying that Neil Druckmann stands with the greatest of modern writers or anything.

It's not even the best post-apocalyptic story written in the last 10 years. It's a damn great video game story, though.

Uh.... Just.. Finish the game and come back ?

TLOU with that ending = 10/10

TLOU with any different ending = 7-8/10

IMO.
I really don't want to sound like an arse, but why can't I discuss what I've played of the game and give a number rating, no matter how silly it is, to portray my feelings towards the experience so far?

Anyway, you're getting there, but you still have a lot of important stuff left to see. Like 70%.

Different media have different types of storytelling which is why sometimes they are hard to compare .
Now TLOU story is okay but as you said the way how every including game play comes to together is what makes it great .

Oh man all these []SPOILERS[] and I haven't even received my copy yet, but I can't say I'm mad about it.

Ordered the game from Swedish retailer MediaMarkt this Sunday with the Europe release on the 31th. However I've been on a trip until Thursday and expected to find the game in my letterbox, which I didn't. Instead I got a mail from them later that day telling me they have now shipped the game, one day after the release date!
Of course I was furious at them for not getting my copy of the Game Of The Years on time! But today I received yet another email with them apologising the greatest and in return I will be gifted a 200kr (~30$) PSN-card, so now I can buy First Light and Hohokum "for free"!
Though I hope not the mail will hold onto it for too long!

I have no problem with that, but i'm just talking about the story, really ( especially with The Las of Us ) you have to finish the game to be able to judge it, the story is an entire thing with a real beginning, a real end.

eh, i don't know.

People were praising the opening scene like the absolute fucking pinnacle of storytelling in the history of videogames and what i got was something i had seen in a half dozen movies before and not especially clever either.
Yes, it's powerful, but then again anything showing you the
death of your beloved daughter
would be.

I seen it in movies all the time but half the time i don't care being able to play it was different.
Still it was not the pinnacle of storytelling don't think i seen anyone said that but it was a nice change .

Im 99% sure the 30fps lock is fucked. Far too jiddery. Seems like 30fps lock @ 30hz
Às I said previously try remote play which is 30fps automatically. Put the game at 60fps then 30 through remote. It should be no difference. Yet it's a big one. 30fps is fucked up in that game

I think we can agree to disagree for the moment, but I'll get back to you when I finish it.

Oh, man. I remember one of my friends came to my house on launch day, telling me how intense that moment was and how it was one of the most perfect scenes he had ever watched in a video game. Every other gamer in my area that had seen that said the same thing.
Because of the ridiculous hype,
I ended up laughing when it came up.

So I've just finished my first playthrough. Here's my experience (for anyone interested). I followed GAF's suggestion, and played on hard mode with "listen" turned off.

Story: Good God did I love this story. It was one of those rare video games where I never once rolled my eyes or thought "Yeah whatever, just get me back to the game!" I mean Joel is just such a conflicting character to play! On the one hand, he's a monster, but on the other hand
the loss of his daughter
must've driven him to such lows. Ellie is the perfect compliment to him. Then there are the supporting characters who really make the game shine. There's no real cheesy bad guy, just a group of people who had a decision to make. Nothing more, nothing less. That ending was just perfect.

Graphics: Well duh, gorgeous. The game was absolutely beautiful minus the
subway
part. That part should've been reconsidered, as I found the game really took a hit there. There were many moments where I would just stop and pan around at the scenery. That's not to say it didn't have some glitches though. My favourite was a part that had a bird suspended in animation, low to the ground. The sound was amazing, making me love my Kunai headphones even more. Again, some hiccups near water with the audio, but otherwise it was great. I really loved how they designed when to play music and when none was needed. It really highlighted the fear-factor (those dead silent moments when you know something is going to happen).

Gameplay: I loved how enemies weren't bullet-sponges, nor was I. Even on hard mode, I never found myself lacking in supplies. My gripe with the gameplay comes with the ally AI. Not only was it weird seeing them run right past enemies (I could live with that), but sometimes they would trigger the enemies spotting me. Hopefully if there's a TLOU2 they can figure a way around it (maybe make the AI sit back and just cover me). Again, these instances were few and far between, but did ruin some moments for me. The controls took a while to get used to, I still don't know if I like using the fire button as a reload button but otherwise it felt good.

Overall: I really enjoyed my time with the game. I powered through it in around 14 hours, but am already prepared to do Hard+ to finish off all the collectibles, then onto grounded and grounded+ (as well as that sweet, sweet mp). Question: I know stats stay, but do shiv doors reseal in NG+ (as in the door doesn't stay open from your previous playthrough)?

Well, they recently performed an unreleased epilogue at the One Night Live thing

OBVIOUSLY INCLUDES ENDING SPOILERS

But I think the ending is beautiful just the way it is. DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DON'T WANT THE ENDING SPOILED.

Spoiler for the ending ahead!

I think the ending is much deeper than that. On a surface level they need each other but really it's that Ellie needs Joel more than Joel needs her.

It goes along with the name of the game. The Last of Us. Certainly it's a telling sign of what occurs in the game, we're the last humans on Earth after the Fungi infection takes over the world... But beyond that The Last of Us is who we are, the characters in the world... It's our last motivations, our last feelings, our last worldviews.

Joel is a broken man who became selfish. That's what I arrived at by the time the credits rolled. He had a chance to do the right thing and he didn't. He could have saved the world and didn't. He could have told Ellie the truth, which is the largest crime and he didn't. Why? Because she would be upset about the after math? Because he made the choice for her?

Another argument that could be brought up when he decided not to give Ellie up for scientific research is that maybe humans aren't worth saving... But to that I say why did he go back to Jackson to live their lives?

I agree. I do think the effect is exacerbated by abruptly switching from 60 to 30 but something definitely feels off for the 30fps option.

i think it's just being able to switch almost on the fly that makes the difference stark, although it's hard to believe; it looks super jittery.
But i think digital foundry measured fps in 30fps mode, no ?

I remember Sega Rally 2 on Dreamcast offered a similar option; at 60 fps the game suffered from several slowdowns and people claimed framerate was dipping to ugly, ugly figures like 15 fps;
locking the framerate to 30, however, got the game rid of any slowdown, which proves the game never actually fell below 30 even in 60fps mode, it was just the abrupt change that made people perceive the framerate as super bad.

Btw, shadows looked absolutely fine for me at 60fps, did the day one patch improve them ?

I just got to
Bill's place
and OMG, the voice acting is incredible. Every single voice actor went above and beyond in their performance. No other game is even close to TLOU when it comes to voice acting. If any of the gals and guys that did voices are reading this; my hat's off to you, your performance was absolute perfection and all voice actors in games should strive to reach your level of performance!

Oh, and for those that have Gold Headset, definitely download the TLOU profile. The game sounds much better with it.

And as some people mentioned earlier, there is something definitely wrong with 30 FPS option. It seems that there is a heavy judder present and 30 FPS in this game doesn't feel like 30 FPS at all. I've played Destiny which has 30 FPS lock and that felt much smoother than TLOU.

Played for around an hour last night, not as long as I'd hoped, but I was tired.....and just like I suspected, I got JACK SHIT done because I was so distracted by the photo-mode XD

Hopefully I get to play a lot more
photomode
over the weekend.

Good god the gamma is deplorable for the first 2 hours. Please tell me this doesn't persist for the entire game?

I also have concerns for the gamma - see previous page - but none seems to care.

I have issues with it, serious issues

I understand why you might think that, but really what is happening is you were spotted and triggered the Ally AI to attack or do whatever they're going to do. If you listen closely there is an audio cue when you're about to be seen

There sure are issues... You're not alone.
Don't get me wrong, game is beautiful, but IQ is a bit rough around the edges. Hope they are tweaking things as we speak and update/patch is on the way. PS4 is capable of so much more, ND brush and polish this diamond a bit more please!

Yeah the
subway
part especially was bad. I had two choices: leave my TV properly calibrated and have it be overly bright/washed out or have crushed blacks via settings tweaks and actually be able to see. I'm not a fan of either choice. Actually there was a 3rd choice.. swim under water.

I'm also using a Panasonic plasma. Never had this issue with any other PS4 games or the PS3 version. At night it almost looks like there's a white sheet across the entire screen. Looks horrific if I'm being brutally honest.

Wat? Anyways the "real" game starts once you're on the Outskirts

edit: I read "gamma" as "game" lol

I clocked the PS3 version 4 separate times so I know how good the "game" is :)

I'm hoping for a patch, this is significantly hampering my experience. Game looks fantastic during the day.

Geez, anyone else has freezing issues or crashes?

Earlier the game just froze while I was running around. Home button still worked so I was able to close the application and restart. Didn't lose any progress thankfully.

Just now I was fiddling around in photo mode and I was suddenly booted to some sort of "Report error" screen. The game had crashed and I was asked to describe the error and attach a video and stuff. Didn't lose any progress here either but this is worrying, and annoying.

Edit: It just happened AGAIN (crash to report error screen) at the exact same spot and while trying to make this photo. To be specific: after I go through all color filters and I end up back at "None", it crashes. Wtf!

Naughty Dog why won't you let me take this picture of the university?!

Wtf are you people talking about gamma issues and shit? Game looks perfect at night and same as on PS3. And no, limited RGB is not the correct setting for TVs. RGB range should be set the same on both the TV and PS4, preferably to Full if your TV has that option. Just make sure not to mix them up. So TV set to full & PS4 set to full and you have the correct setting. If you set your TV to limited and PS4 to full or viceversa you get degraded visuals, black crush etc.

And for people complaining about the subway section, it is meant to be dark ffs. Use the fuckin flashlight.
