The LEGO Thread

Saw the August newsletter and the fact they are brining the mini hulk promotion back. Obviously not enough people took them up on the offer HA HA HA!

I didn't see that in my newsletter. Just the VIP contest.

Also just noticed that Lego's birthday is the day after mine. Nice.

I'm in the UK so that may make the difference.

May as well place this tibet on a new page!

I figured out the 2nd oddity. Later on in the instructions, they show you how to motorize the train, and for that, the parts used in that 4x4 block get reused to affix the motor and receiver in place. Brilliant.

*edit* that thread is a good read :) I figured the 1x1 brick is probably there to keep the gear from falling off, nice to see it confirmed by Jamie himself :) Still odd that they didn't fix it, but I like the proposed half-bush solution.

I was tempted to motorise mine, but it's too ugly and I can't bring myself to do it - the battery box sticks out of the tender and th motor sticks out of the cab. Shame. I think I will motorise my maersk though, which is much neater (and uses a dedicated train motor). You got the maersk?

When I went into the Lego store on Tuesday and bought the 4x4 crawler and new creator tow truck, i asked if they were still doing the sopwith camel offer (I knew it expired a week ago but thought they might have a few lying around). The lady at the counter said sorry but they ran out, and then threw a few poybags in with my order - Ninjago hidden sword (with ninja minifig), bat mobile and star destroyer :)

LegoGAF, I was wondering where I should start?

I've been tempted lately to buy a set just to build something random, although I'm also extremely tempted to get the Minecraft set since I like how the colors work in that kit.

Unfortunately I no longer have a single piece of Lego left from my childhood, so I was wondering what would be the best way to start up another collection. Currently, I'm between an ultimate building set bucket and the deluxe bucket. Another option is to forgo the general tub of parts and get an actual set, though I'm not sure where I'd put something completed at the moment due to display space constraints but the Minecraft one would be almost perfect as a desk decoration. I figured I should probably ask first since I'm not even sure where I want to start besides standing somewhere at a Minecraft set + something else for now. Besides that, I'm definitely open to suggestions.

Thanks!

What kind of money are you looking to spend?

When I jumped on the LEGO train earlier this year (when TESTED.com did their competition) I wanted a set that looked good, had a lot of pieces for the price, and wasn't too big (since I don't have a lot of space ATM).

I ended up going with the Mini-Modular set. It has a lot of pieces for the $80. It's basically 5 different little sets in one. The pieces are very small, but you get a great variety.

The full sized modulars are a great deal for the number of bricks you get, but they are $150 and pretty big.

If you're looking for something even cheaper I'd just recommend getting a set that looks good to you. The Minecraft set is nice and very friendly for making your own designs. The Creator sets are nice because they include a lot of versatile pieces and have multiple build instruction included.

Quick question regarding the modular buildings theme, guys:

Are you buying them for display purposes or the pieces to build other things? I've got three or four kicking about and while i'd love to use those bricks for something else I don't think i could ever imagine myself destroying them. :(

I bought Fire Brigade mainly for display. I keep thinking about breaking it down to create something different, but it is such a great display piece that I don't think I will. I am now eyeing Grand Emporium to go with FB.

I'm still searching too.

I've got the box. While many don't have bump codes at all the ones that do are much fainter than before. The variations are more subtle too I think. God knows how these people on Ebay figure out what's what. The judo and horse rider are almost identical.

Really? I found the horse rider to be easy to get.

Only have three though. Then I was given a packet out of the blue and ended up with another gymnast.

Ah the hair. Apologies. Boots seem to be doing some sale on lego if you're in the UK. The Republic Frigate is £35 but listed as "stock coming soon" so if you want one on the cheap I'd have a look out.

Finally finished her. I think I can take a pretty good break from building now. (Yeah right!) Here's a little bonus time lapse video of the build. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Oh and as much as it pains me to do it, I'm going to sell this bad boy. So I'm putting it up for grabs here first. I've had a couple transactions in the buy/sell thread so it's all good.

How Much?

My modulars are for display and play. My children love them. I do not see myself breaking them down.

I am with biggyfries and SillyEskimo. I don't see myself breaking them down. Well, unless it is simply to rebuild them for fun.

Sadly, a lot of sets I buy just because I want parts to just make more modular MOCs, but a few sets are so awesome once together that I just leave them up. My Star Wars ships are kind of permanent display pieces now. And I did not anticipate the Quinjet being that way, but it probably will be.

I am toying with the notion of tearing down the LOTR stuff. At least Helm's Deep and Mines of Moria to strip them for parts. Just need to see what kind of inventory I am working with before starting my next building.

Removing smoke stink from LEGO bricks: can it be done?
Easy, I smoke but not in my LEGO build area anymore, just drop the LEGO in a cloth wash bag or a ratty pillow case & tie it up. Fill a bucket with 1/2 warm water, add 1/4 baking soda & 1/2 vinegar & the LEGO sack in that order. Soak for an hour. Rinse. Throw the solution out & make a new one. Repeat.

After 3 washes, hopefully the smoke smell is gone. If not, marinate them in it for much longer. Finally, wash & rinse them in warm soapy water.

Oh yeah, any stickers there will be destroyed & any LEGO piece that is not ABS plastic too may or may not come out of it unscathed. Like the rubber tires, those will harden & crumble like a cookie if you wash them so take care on what pieces you out in for wash.

Same. I think my sopwith camel will come down pretty quickly, not really in love with that and it's big. But a ton of mine are hard to break down. All modulars, imperial shuttle, x-wing/TIE duo, VW camper, emerald night and maersk. But I need some space :)

Is that Hayabusa model available in US/Euro stores, too? How much?

Thanks for the input you two.

Maybe I'll just shoot with the Minecraft set and the below one first. Would you happen to have a link to that Mini-Modular set you were talking about? The price point is okayish although I'd like to take a look at what's in it as I guess I wanted to avoid going full out just yet. But all of that is really subjective.

Looks fun. I wonder if it'll make it here in time though with Amazon + Super Saver Shipping. I'm cheap like that and Legos fall under the new item type purchase so they'll probably stall the shipment for an extra 4-5 days or so like everything else out of the norm. I'll try this out.

The Blue Roadster is easily available at tons of places. I even see it at the grocery store all the time. Just go out and buy it in a store. The tax is less than a buck, and you dont have to wait. :)

Great set with brilliant attention to detail. Effectively five little model houses for $80, so $15 each. I'd be tempted to get that over the minecraft set personally unless you're a big fan of minecraft

I'm a huge fan of the color-set rather. and I'd probably set it up in a way where all 4 modules would be against each other in a row to look more like Terraria. But that Mini-Modular set is very tempting, as well. I'll have a think about this after I get to work in a bit.

Very true, but I work every day, morning to when rush hour is in effect and have no interest in going to the mall to check the Lego Store there. I like Amazon out of convenience, and it happens to coincide with when my job ends due to the state grant running out for everyone that holds the same position as myself so more fun time I guess. But I'll do Amazon out of laziness more than convenience.

Edit: The local walmart has it! Now to get myself down there to begin with. There's no need to think about the Minecraft one anymore since the $35 set on Amazon is sold out again. Back up to $70 for those stores on Amazon.

Stopped by BN today out of curiosity (and the fact that they have a 20% off coupon this weekend), and was shocked to see the Fury Interceptor and The Malevolence there. They are only $2 more than MSRP, and it was so tempting to get one of them with the coupon. But the more I look at the Fury, the less I am interested. I think it might be the price for what I get that is turning me off, but it is just not screaming to me. While the Malevolence looks cooler each time. A different shaped ship is always nice, and I like the color scheme of it with the blue in there.

So, I passed on both and went to Target to get some groceries, and they redid their entire Lego aisle there. Finally a good selection! They had the Fury, Malevolence, but also Jabba's Palace. But thank god they had one copy of The Zombies left. Snatched that right up.

Thinking of getting two Technic sets. What combination would you guys suggest?

9398 Crawler + 8043 Excavator
9398 Crawler + 8110 Unimog
8110 Unimog + 8043 Excavator

The 9398 is very tempting because of the servo motor with the proportional control.
The 8043 is very tempting because of the linear actuators and the tracks. (The other sets are all wheel based).
The 8110 is very tempting because of the pneumatic functions and the large piece count in general.

The only other set I own is the 8070 and I am interesting in making it RC.

@PhoncipleBone - Is that 20% coupon available to everyone? Do you know if BN sell Technic sets in store?

The 20% coupon is for members. Think there is a 15% coupon for non members. There is also an online coupon to use on the website.

They have Technic in stores, but nothing huge. They do have the Excavator online though. Have not looked at Unimog.

Is that Hayabusa model available in US/Euro stores, too? How much?

Bought it at an online shop (Dutch), only 50 euro's too.

Btw, LOTR sets are finally available in store over here too. Bought Arrival of Gandalf, will get the rest next month or so (buying online though, store prices are outrageous).

What was happening on the South Bank?

Someone on here (sorry can't remember) is involved in a Lego thing (on the terrace at festival hall, which took us some time to find), where they are building a big map of the world from 16x16 plates. You grab a plate and a design and build it up, then place it on the map.

We popped into London anyway, it's surprisingly quiet

Mickcenary, as promised we got around to building the samurai mech. (Well, 10 minutes in my daughter decided the snakes and Samurai X needed to fight, so I ended up building it.)

It as very cool, but I question it's playability a bit, as there are are lots of little details that are extremely easy to knock off. On the plus side it is very faithful to the model in the show, so my daughter is very chuffed with it :)

I'd say it's worth getting if you like the look of it, or if you have a Ninjago fan in the house.

Is this a continuous thing or just today. I'm taking a week off work next week and South Bank is easy for me to get to.

Many thanks for that, DodgerSan. I had an itch that needed scratching, so I went ahead and bought it, anyway. Ha. Around 50AUD shipped from Europe, IIRC.

I quite like the aesthetics of it; plus, I've got nothing "mech-y" and the fact that it stands vertically makes it a lot easier to store/display.

Excited. Went and ordered the Lego Creator - Helicopter and Lego Creator - Transport Truck sets off Amazon warehouse for a total of $25 with some odd change thrown in there. Gonna go down to Walmart and grab the roadster and see what I can do with it tonight hopefully.

Need to get my grubby mitts on the Minecraft set when it comes back in stock for $35 though, really want it because I'm a fan of another game that's like it but in 2D.

I really do miss all the stuff I had as a kid though. I remember my very last set being some robo-dinosaur thing that was gray and black. Roboforce and Chip Nebula, I had that guy, but it's kind of gaudy when I look at it now.
Edit: Found it, it was this one. http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/2152_Robo_Raptor

Bricklinking old sets that you used to have can get expensive fast.

Enjoy your creator sets, good choice with multiple builds

Wife got home from being out of town for a week, but she did grab me 2 large and 1 small PAB cups while near Chicago.

The bounty:

130 white 1x8
100 dark tan 2x2 tile
91 red chairs
23 black slope 2x4
24 black slope 3x2
31 black hanging bar
8 clear 2x2 slope
13 white 1x4 arch
18 dark gray corner brick
45 light gray 1x4 brick
2 dark gray trash can
10 white picked fence
6 gray hanging ladders
2 car bodies
1 light gray 2x4 brick
69 light tan decorative brick

573 bricks

She went looking for things for me to make a building, and damn did she deliver. Especially with the chairs. I commented to her that I had thought about doing a theater, and I think 90 seats would be a pretty large and sweet Lego theater. But the 100 2x2 dark tan tiles are like gold for me. Can finally make a sweet sidewalk for a building without having to scrounge up tiles.

Okay, short reviews of two Monster Fighter sets.

I had grabbed The Werewolf set a few months ago when Toys R Us first got it. While that set was not that bad, I mainly got it for the Werewolf figure. It did, however, have one sweet lil vehicle build.

But for the two purchases this week:

The Crazy Scientist and His Monster (AKA Frankenstein's Monster. Or as I have referred to him: Balnab)

The build itself is pretty decent, but not really special. I did particularly like the portion with the lightning rod and table to bring The Monster (Balnab!) to life.

The other parts of the build are okay. Some neat little flourishes, such as the skull in a jar. But nothing really special.

I was not a big fan of the vehicle in this set. The slide out gun on the other side (that I failed to get a pic of) is okay. But the vehicle is a tad underwhelming.

But there is one redeeming quality to this set:

The mini figures are awesome. Sure, the one did come with The Werewolf set, but an extra pith helmet is always welcome!

IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE!

Overall: Recommended, if only for the figures and the part where you bring The Monster to life. Thankfully, you can detach the rest of the set and have only that part on display.

Second Monster Fighter set of the week: THE ZOMBIES!

No, not these Zombies!

Let's start with the vehicle and the first mini figure.

Not bad. The claw arm is neat, but this is the most "meh" of the Monster Fighters so far. I do like the hat though.

But whatever the figure is lacking, it is made up for with the completely AWESOME vehicle. Not only does it have a plow on the front to mow over zombie scum, but hammers that swing as it drives! My only complaint is that the hammers swing backwards, so they knock the victims forward. I would have preferred if the hammers swung forward to crush zombies. Either way, this part of the build is very cool, and boss when done.

The zombie family. Ready for their close up.

The rest of the set...

The cauldron, filled with bones and whatnot. There is a lever in the back of the set to make it explode out and send the pieces flying.

The coffins. I am not a big fan of the exposed studs on the side. It looks rather pedestrian after the awesome coffin that was part of Mines of Moria.

But there is a reason why it does not bother me too much. Just grab a hold of the jewel in the center of the set and twist...

And grisly ghouls from every tomb will soon be closing in to seal your doom!

Overall: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! While the mini figures are not as great as some other Monster Fighter sets, and the build itself is good but not great, the interactivity of it and the completely over the top vehicle put this over the top. Great display piece, and the hidden zombie surprise should be fun for people that aren't expecting it.

Nice pics. I just preordered the Castle and the Hearse from shopforme at 30% off. $105 and $35 is not bad and close to the US price so can't really complain.
